Martin Murray in the crosshairs for Golovkin’s next fight

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: Interim WBA middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1, 11 KO’s) is in the cross-hairs for WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s next fight in February in Monte Carlo, provided that Murray wins his next fight on December 11th against 35-year-old Australian Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8 KO’s) at the Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Murray should win that fight fairly easily to put him in position to either face Golovkin or walk away from the fight, which is what I suspect will happen. The World Boxing Association has made the 31-year-old Murray the mandatory for Golovkin, so that’s who they’ll be looking to fight in February to get it over with. But it’s going to be interesting to see if Murray agrees to take the fight or not, because in the past he’s seemed to freeze up and get tongue-tied when asked about whether he would face Golovkin. I have a feeling that Murray will opt not to take the fight with Golovkin in February or ever for that matter.

Martin Murray hoping to fight Garth Wood on November 30th in Australia

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: WBA interim middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) is hoping to defend his interim strap against #10 WBA, Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8 KO’s) on November 30th in Australia. Murray, 30, is looking to get a visa to fight over in Australia.

Wood, 35-years-old, has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights. It’s hard to figure out why the World Boxing Association hasn’t adjusted their rankings to have Wood ranked outside of the top 15, because it’s kind of odd to have a fighter ranked in the top 15 when they’ve lost 2 out of their last 4 fights like Wood has.

Murray said via Sky Sports “If I can get a visa to Australia, I’ll be defending my WBA interim title against Garth Wood in Sydney on November 30th.”

Martin Murray Interview

murray57By Nathan Haworth: Martin Murray, 30 years old from St Helens, England; has a fantastic professional record of 25 wins from 27 fights, 11 coming by way of KO, and he has 1 loss and 1 draw. His first blemish came in 2011 at the SAP-Arena in Germany against former WBA (Super) World Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm; this was a split decision draw.

Murray then went on to have two consecutive victories before challenging Sergio Martinez for The Ring and WBC Middleweight titles last April. The outcome of this fight was extremely controversial with Murray knocking Martinez down twice and dominating the majority of the fight only for Murray to lose via unanimous decision.

Today I spoke with Martin about his potential future bouts; his toughest fight in the ring and Darren Barker Vs Felix Sturm.

Martin Murray wants British clash against Darren Barker

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA, #8 IBF, #9 WBC, Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) is hoping that he can get a fight against newly crowned IBF middleweight champion Darren Barker (26-1, 16 KO’s) in a fight that would be a big deal in the UK, but not for the rest of the world.

Barker recently beat former IBF 160 lb. champion Daniel Geale last Saturday night by a controversial 12 round split decision in which the fight was decided by one of the judges giving Barker the 12th round. The thing is Geale totally dominated the 12th round, and had Barker clearly hurt.

Barker is now supposed to be fighting his mandatory challenger Felix Sturm next, but Barker’s promoter Eddie Hearn has made no secret of the fact that he’d like to see Barker face Murray in an all British clash.

Martin Murray hoping to fight Darren Barker next

MARTIN MURRAY believes a clash between him and Darren Barker would be one for the ages.

Barker won the IBF middleweight title at the weekend with a bruising 12 round decision over Daniel Geale.

And in the days since, the Barnet man has mentioned Murray as a potential opponent for first defence.

Murray has already proven his mettle at world level in two overseas title attempts and, if made, the fight would easily be the biggest all-British clash in the 160lbs division since the era of Eubank, Benn and Watson.

Martin Murray: I wasn’t made an offer to fight Golovkin

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) is saying that he hasn’t been given an offer from WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s team about a fight in November. This is news, because Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler of K2 has reportedly told RingTV that Murray doesn’t want the fight with Golovkin.

Murray says he’s going to be looking to get his visa situation taken care of so that he can travel to the U.S. That’s good news, because there’s no way on Earth that a talent like Golovkin is going to come all the way over to the UK to defend his strap against #1 WBA, #7 WBC, #8 IBF, Murray. That would so backwards if he were to do that. Why accommodate a challenger. Besides, HBO reportedly prefers that Golovkin’s next fight is staged in the U.S if they’re going to televise it.

Martin Murray complains of visa problems; Golovkin fight not likely

murray66By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA, Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) says he has visa problems at the moment that he needs to take care of before he can start thinking about facing the likes of talented WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s).

Golovkin’s manager is interested in putting a fight together between Golovkin at the #1 WBA, Martin Murray for November in a fight that would be televised by HBO, but unfortunately it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen unless Murray can take care of his visa problems.

Murray said in an interview with Livefight, “I’ve not been told of an offer. A date of November 2 is the first I’ve heard. I’ve not been told anything. If they said they want to fight me then that’s fair enough but I’ve still got visa issues to sort out…he’s not fought anyone like myself. That’s when you’ll see the best of me.”

Golovkin v Murray makes sense

murray66By B.G.B: Based on last weekends action, the question on every boxing fan’s mind right now is where does Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) go after his demolition job of tough middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s)? Throughout the 3 rounds of the bout, Golovkin demonstrated frightful power along with patience, poise, accuracy and a solid defense.

As the hype grows, the opponents improve (or so they should), and although fans around the world would dream of seeing ‘GGG’ face the likes of Martinez, Alvarez, Froch and Ward  next, those fights are not likely to materialize any time soon. One fight I would like to see that has a very realistic possibility of being made is ‘GGG’ v Martin Murray (27-25, 11 KO’s). Here’s why:

Martin Murray open to a Golovkin or Macklin fight

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight contender Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) has tried his hand at taking on top fighters in Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm and on both occasions he’s come up short of the victory. Now Murray says wants to fight the winner of this months’ fight between Gennady Golovkin and Matthew Macklin if possible, and he’s even willing to fight the winner in the United States.

Murray said “I’m open to all offers at middleweight, whether that be against Chavez Jr., the winner of Golovkin vs. Macklin.”

Okay, let’s be honest here. Murray isn’t going to get a fight against Julio Chavez Jr., so he can get that fight out of his mind. However, he CAN get a fight against Golovkin after he takes care of Macklin this month in their fight on June 29th.

Roach to train Chavez Jr. for Martin Murray fight on August 3rd

chavez91By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) will be back with his trainer Freddie Roach to get ready for his up and coming August 3rd fight against Britain’s Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) at the Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Roach says he’s not going to put up with Chavez Jr. blowing off training sessions with him like he did the last time they worked together in getting ready for the Sergio Martinez fight last September. Chavez Jr. frequently missed training sessions and instead worked out at home.
