murray64By Scott Gilfoid: WBA interim middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) is hoping to defend his interim strap against #10 WBA, Garth Wood (12-3-1, 8 KO’s) on November 30th in Australia. Murray, 30, is looking to get a visa to fight over in Australia.

Wood, 35-years-old, has lost 2 out of his last 4 fights. It’s hard to figure out why the World Boxing Association hasn’t adjusted their rankings to have Wood ranked outside of the top 15, because it’s kind of odd to have a fighter ranked in the top 15 when they’ve lost 2 out of their last 4 fights like Wood has.

Murray said via Sky Sports “If I can get a visa to Australia, I’ll be defending my WBA interim title against Garth Wood in Sydney on November 30th.”

It would be nice if Murray chose to defend his WBA title against someone with fewer losses in their last four fights, a higher ranking, and with more skills. I mean, why is Murray going to fight a guy with 2 losses in his last 4 fights when Murray could have agreed to fight someone like WBA champion Gennady Golovkin.

Yeah, I can kind of see why Wood might be preferable to Golovkin for Murray, because Murray would have pretty much no chance of beating Golovkin. With a guy as old as the 35-year-old Wood, with his losses to Anthony Mundine and Sam Soliman, it puts Murray in a good position to win the fight.

Murray was beaten by WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez by a 12 round unanimous decision last April in Argentina. Murray had the chance to win the fight, but he wasted too much time just covering up in his turtle-shell defense.

When you challenge a champion like Sergio Martinez, you have to do more than just covering up for 12 rounds the way that Murray did. Murray fought like a sparring partner rather than someone that wanted to win the fight. I got the impression in watching Murray that he was afraid to get hit with something big from Martinez.
