Sturm says no offer was made to Martin Murray

murray64 - CopyBy Scott Gilfoid: In response to the news from the Daily Mail that a fight offer had been made to Martin Murray, IBF middleweight champion Felix Sturm took to twitter to deny that any offer whatsoever had been made to the 31-year-old Murray for a fight. Ouch, that’s got to hurt Murray, because a fight between him and Sturm would have at least given him a chance to capture a world title at 160.

Without Sturm throwing him a bone, Murray is faced with bleak prospects of capturing a strap. I mean, what do think is going to happen when Murray eventually has to make a decision whether to fight WBA champion Gennady Golovkin or not? If he takes the fight, Murray will almost surely get knocked out.

Martin Murray offered title fight by Felix Sturm

murray53By Scott Gilfoid: Britain’s Martin Murray (26-1-1, 11 KO’s) has reportedly been offered a rematch against IBF middleweight champion Felix Sturm (39-3-2, 18 KO’s), according to the Daily Mail. There’s no date or venue yet for when this fight could take place or if Murray will accept the offer.

But you have to like the timing of the offer with it coming directly after Murray pulled out of his fight against #3 WBA, Jarrod Fletcher that was scheduled to take place on the February 1st Gennady Golovkin vs. Osumanu Adama card in Monte Carlo, Monaco. That right was originally supposed to be for the vacant WBA middleweight title.

Martin Murray pulls out of his February 1st fight against Jarrold Fletcher

murray66By Scott Gilfoid: In another huge blow to the February 1st Gennady Golovkin vs. Osumanu Card, WBA interim middleweight strap holder Martin Murray (26-1-1, 11 KO’s) has reportedly pulled out of the card for an unknown reason. Murray, 31, had been scheduled to fight #3 WBA, Jarrod Fletcher (17-1, 10 KO’s) in a scheduled 12 round bout.

There’s no word yet whether Murray had second thoughts or if he suffered an injury like fellow UK fighter Nathan Cleverly, who pulled out of the card himself on Tuesday due to an unspecified injury.

Fletcher said this on his Facebook page: “Martin Murray has pulled out of his scheduled fight with Jarrod ‘Left Jab’ Fletcher! ‘Left Jab’ will still fight on the Gennady Golovkin vs. Osumanu Adama card, with the annoucement of the new opponent to be made as soon as possible.

Martin Murray’s fight against Fletcher won’t have WBA 160 lb. title on the line

murray8292By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Association won’t be elevating WBA regular middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to “Super World” middleweight champion, according to Fightnews. The WBA has decided, at least for now, to keep the 31-year-old Golovkin as the regular WBA middleweight champion. This means that WBA interim 160 lb. champion Martin Murray (26-1-1, 11 KO’s) will be merely making a defense of his interim title against #3 WBA Jerrod Fletcher (17-1, 10 KO’s) on February 1st and not fighting for the regular WBA middleweight crown. That makes a heck of a lot more sense than having the Murray-Fletcher fight be for a world title, because how can Murray be fighting for a world title again when he was beaten just last April by WBC champion Sergio Martinez?

The Murray-Fletcher fight will be taking place on the undercard of Golovkin’s title defense against Osumanu Adama at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Martin Murray thinks he can beat Golovkin

murray53By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBA Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) recently had the chance to fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin for his title, but instead Murray down the fight and went in a safer direction in facing journeyman Sergey Khomitsky (28-9-2, 11 KO’s) this Saturday night at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, London. But despite turning down the fight with Golovkin, Murray is saying he thinks he can beat him.

It’s hard to understand Murray’s logic. If he actually believes he can beat Golovkin, then what in the heck is Murray doing fighting a journeyman like Khomitsky? Murray Already fought this guy in 2009 and beat him by an unimpressive 8 round decision, and now he’s fighting him again for some reason. It doesn’t make sense.

Andy Lee to take Martin Murry’s place on Froch-Groves card

lee91By Scott Gilfoid: WBA interim middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) is off of this Saturday’s Carl Froch vs. George Groves card due to Murray coming down with a virus. In Murray’s place will be #7 WBC, #12 WBA, #14 WBO, Andy Lee (30-2, 21 KO’s) facing an opponent still to be determined.

Given that Lee’s opponent still hasn’t been picked out, you can bet that it’s going to be a less than stellar fighter. Murray was supposed to be fighting 2nd tier fighter Sergey Khomitsky, which was going to be a terrible mismatch, so there’s not much change with Lee on the card in what will likely be a mismatch as well.

Martin Murray vs. Sergey Khomitsky this Saturday on Froch-Groves card

murray92By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight contender Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) will be taking on a soft opponent in 39-year-old journeyman Sergey Khomitsky (28-9-2, 11 KO’s) this Saturday night in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the Carl Froch vs. George Groves card at the Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.

The sad thing about the Murray-Khomitsky is that Murray already beat Khomitsky four years ago in beating him by an 8 round points decision. My question is why is Murray fighting Khomitsky when he already beat him soundly?

Golovkin won’t be fighting Martin Murray in February

golovkin45By Scott Gilfoid: Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions shot down the idea of WBA interim middleweight champion Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) fighting WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s) on February 1st at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. It’s not going to happen. Loeffler already offered the Golovkin fight to Murray in the past but he turned it down.

Loeffler says they want guys like Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for Golovkin, although neither of those guys are going to be available to fight Golovkin for his next fight in February.

Loeffler said to RingTV “Murray had turned down a previous shot for him to fight Gennady in Canada…We would like a unification fight with Martinez, or a fight with Julio Cesar Chavez…until we can get one of them in the ring with him, we’re going to keep Gennady active.”
