Martin Murray open to a Golovkin or Macklin fight

murray64By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight contender Martin Murray (25-1-1, 11 KO’s) has tried his hand at taking on top fighters in Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm and on both occasions he’s come up short of the victory. Now Murray says wants to fight the winner of this months’ fight between Gennady Golovkin and Matthew Macklin if possible, and he’s even willing to fight the winner in the United States.

Murray said “I’m open to all offers at middleweight, whether that be against Chavez Jr., the winner of Golovkin vs. Macklin.”

Okay, let’s be honest here. Murray isn’t going to get a fight against Julio Chavez Jr., so he can get that fight out of his mind. However, he CAN get a fight against Golovkin after he takes care of Macklin this month in their fight on June 29th.

I think Golovkin would take a fight against Murray in a second if none of the other middleweight champions want to fight him and that’s what it’s looking like. Sergio Martinez, Daniel Geale and Peter Quillin have shown zero interest in fighting him. As such, it looks like Murray could be one of the only worthwhile opponents for Golovkin to fight after he takes care of Macklin.

I just hope that Murray is serious about wanting to fight Golovkin because it would be so sad if Golovkin is met with a “no sale” sign when he tries to get a fight with Murray later this year.

Murray fought Sergio Martinez for his WBC middleweight title last April in Argentina and ended up losing a close 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 115-112, 115-112 and 115-112. Murray basically blew it in the fight. He might have had a chance to win the fight against the injured Martinez, but Murray just covered up most of the fight and it was such a waste. I mean, if you want to win a world title against the champion, you can’t just cover up like a sparring partner and throw occasional shots.

The way that Murray fought he wasn’t going to win in Argentina. It was just a bad plan and I’m so surprised that his trainer didn’t talk some sense into him in between rounds when it was clear that he was giving the fight away.

If Murray comes into a fight against Golovkin with the same sparring partner type of fighting style, he’s going to get drilled. Golovkin can actually fight on the inside unlike Sergio Martinez, and he’d walk up to Murray and destroy his body if the Brit covered up his head for 12 rounds.

Golovkin would literally force Murray to drop his guard to protect his midsection because if he doesn’t, he’ll get taken out with a body shot. The thing is, once Murray drops his guard to protect his body, Golovkin will knock him out with a head shot. As Floyd Mayweather Jr. would say, “Easy work.”
