Algieri will need to bring some power to beat Khan

EW5G1248(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Unless former WBO 140 light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) makes some major improvement in his punching power for tonight’s fight against Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs), we’re likely to see Algieri go down to defeat.

That’s way a lot of fans see it, and it’s also the way former two division world champ Paulie Malignaggi sees it. Khan does well against fighters with zero power who try to box him. The guys that Khan struggles with are pressure fighters and ones with superb punching power.

Khan vs. Algieri tonight

Image: Khan vs. Algieri tonight(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Ryan Allan: Amir “King” Khan returns to the States tonight to take on former world champion and Manny Pacquiao punching bag Chris Algieri in a bid to keep his name in position to land the so called Mayweather sweepstakes for the champion’s forthcoming and supposedly final September fight.

When the fight was announced, I was quick to slam Khan for picking such an underwhelming name in Algieri when his division is stacked with so many top fighters and while I still feel the fight is hardly one to get the pulses racing, it is at least a decent test for Khan against a man who does have 2 good wins over Emmanuel Taylor and more recently in the Russian warrior, Ruslan Provodnikov.

Amir Khan vs. Chris Algieri: Is this the most irrelevant match-up this year?

Image: Amir Khan vs. Chris Algieri: Is this the most irrelevant match-up this year?(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Gerardo Granados: This Friday, on May 29th at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, former promising light welterweight belt holder Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) will face a tailor made opponent in Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs), who has a little to no chance to defeat Khan in their fight on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions.

This year has had very good match-ups in the sport, and we have been able to see really good battles, but sadly we also have witnessed a couple of mismatches in which the cab driver assassin, WBC super bantamweight belt holder Leo Santa Cruz, has the lead as the most solid candidate for the 2015 Boxingnews24 Cab Driver Assassin Award.

Algieri can win, he’s going to shock people, says Jackson

Image: Algieri can win, he’s going to shock people, says Jackson(Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Allan Fox: While most people believe that former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) has virtually no chance of pulling off an upset on Friday in his fight against Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs), Algieri’s new trainer John David Jackson believes he’s going to shock the world by defeating Khan in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Jackson notes that Algieri is the taller fighter of the two at 5’10” compared to the 5′ 8½″ for Khan, and that Algieri will rehydrate to around 160 pounds by the time he steps inside the ring.

Weights: Khan 146.4, Algieri 146.2

EW5G1346(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) successfully made weight on Thursday at his weigh-in for his fight on Friday against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Khan weighed in at 146.4 pounds.

For his part, Algieri, 31, weighed in at slightly less at 146.2 pounds. Their fight will be televised on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions on Friday. This is Khan’s moment in the sun, his last chance to try and prove himself worthy of a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. for later this year in September.

Khan says he’s not focused on Mayweather now, just Algieri

EW5G0027(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Despite the endless comments that Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) has made about wanting to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. next in September, Khan says he’s not concentrating on a fight against Mayweather right now. Instead, he says he’s only focused on the task at hand against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) in their fight this Friday on May 29th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Khan, 28, sees the Algieri fight as the stage for him to show that he deserves a fight against Mayweather, even though boxing fans largely don’t rate Algieri as a good enough opponent for Khan to use as a springboard for a fight against someone as popular as Mayweather.

That’s still not stopping Khan from believing that beating Algieri is the magical key to open the door to the riches he would get in a fight against Mayweather.

“Everywhere I go, people ask me, “what about Mayweather? What about Pacquiao?” I’m not looking at them guys,” Khan said via the Dailymail.co.uk.

Hunter: Khan is very close to being a Hall of Fame boxer

Algieri_v_Kahn_workouts_5-27-15_13890Photo credit: Ed Diller/DiBella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: Despite losses to Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is almost ready for the boxing Hall of Fame, at least that’s what his trainer Virgil Hunter is spouting. Hunter believes that because of Khan’s wins over the light hitting Paulie Malignaggi, an arguably shot Zab Judah, Marco Antonio Barrera and Luis Collazo that he’s proven himself as a Hall of Fame fighter.

I can’t say I agree with Hunter, because if Khan is ready for the Hall of Fame, then that must mean Peterson, Garcia and Prescott are all ready for the Hall of Fame as well, because they all beat Khan. I hate to say it but if Khan gets into the Hall off of the career he’s had so far, I think that cheapens the Hall to the extreme. I know it’s very hard to get voted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. I’d like to think that the Boxing Hall of Fame would be exclusive to where only the true quality guys get in.

Khan: I’m going to be ready for anything Algieri brings to the table

Image: Khan: I’m going to be ready for anything Algieri brings to the table(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is ready for his fight this Friday night against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) in New York. Khan has a pretty good idea what to expect from the 31-year-old Algieri in terms of tricks.

Khan is expecting Algieri to come out trying to box with him instead of slugging it out, and he says he’ll look to overwhelm him with his speed and movement. In the way that Khan describes the fight, it could very well be a really boring fight to watch because Khan hates being hit, especially after his knockout losses to Breidis Prescott and Danny Garcia.

Khan says he wanted Cotto and Broner, chose Algieri as last resort

khan774By Allan Fox: After attempting to get the likes of Adrien Broner and Miguel Cotto to fight him, Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) says he signed for the fight against former WBO light welterweight champion Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) because he didn’t have time to wait longer to look for another guy to agree to the fight with him.

In other words, Algieri wasn’t the guy that Khan wanted. He was the one that he chose because he couldn’t get the fighters he wanted to agree to fight him. Khan will be facing Algieri, 31, this Friday night on May 29th on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Algieri: You are going to see a whole new fighter come Friday night

Image: Algieri: You are going to see a whole new fighter come Friday nightBy Scott Gilfoid: Beware, Amir Khan, you are about to see a brand new Chris Algieri on Friday night when you get inside the ring at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, at least that’s what Algieri is saying. He says he’s made a lot of improvements in his game with the help of his new trainer John David Jackson, and they’re ready to down Khan and ruin his vision of a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Khan wants that fight so badly he can taste it. But the 31-year-old Algieri feels that Jackson has transformed him to a whole new fighter, and he’s ready to spring that new version of himself on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions.
