Khan fails to silence critics

khan0987(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Ryan Allan: Amir Khan returned to the ring this past Friday with a less than sparkling display in his unanimous points victory over the American, Chris Algieri at the Barclays centre, New York.

I tipped Khan to win on points in my submission last week but the manner of his victory has failed to inspire much credit or respect for the Bolton man.

Khan, who is still trying to earn a fight with Floyd Mayweather, had been ridiculed for his choice of opponent in Algieri and he did little in the fight to turn these sneers to cheers as he fought to a somewhat unconvincing decision win over the game New Yorker who looked pretty huge at the weight and fought an aggressive and educated fight despite his defeat.

The American deserves a lot of praise for performing above his expected level but as ever there is not much sign of praise for Algieri even if Khan did under-perform.Khan though will be disappointed with this performance on Friday: Here he was in a fight that he really needed to look good in, considering the lack of perceived threat in Algieri, but his speed and power were lacking, and once again there are more questions than answers for Amir who many feel is simply not doing enough to warrant the fight with Mayweather he so desperately craves.

Khan-Algieri averages 811,000 viewers on Spike TV

khan677777777(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Scott Gilfoid: Last Friday’s bout between Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) and former WBOI 140lb champ Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) brought in an average of 811,000 viewers on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions. The fight peaked at 1.3 million viewers. That’s not bad for a fight on Spike TV. The numbers likely would have been much higher had the fight been televised on NBC or CBS.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the numbers were twice as good on those networks. The Khan vs. Algieri fight took place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. They reportedly scaled the fight for an attendance of 7,000, and curtained off the other half of the Barclays Center.

Khan to have long talk with trainer Virgil Hunter, wants to become his “own boss”

khan213(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Scott Gilfoid: In what could be the beginning of the end for Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) being trained by Virgil Hunter, Khan hints that he was over-trained for his fight last Friday against Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs), and that he’s going to be the one in charge of how training goes. Khan says he’ll use Hunter for his next fight against whoever that may be, but he’s going to be more involved with what’s going on in his training camps.

This all very predictable, as Khan has twice previously dumped well-respected trainers after poor performances in the past. In 2008, Khan was knocked out in the 1st round by Breidis Prescott. After that fight, Khan’s trainer Jorge Rubio was let go. After Khan was knocked out by Danny Garcia in 2012, Khan replaced trainer Freddie Roach with Virgil Hunter, a trainer known for his ability to teach defense. But with Khan’s poor performance against Algieri, it’s quite possible that trainer Virgil Hunter’s days are numbered as Khan’s trainer.

Algieri: I felt like I won the fight

EW5G6457(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) thinks he did enough to earn a 12 round decision last night in his match-up against Britain’s Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs). Algieri says he landed the cleaner and harder shots, and he hurt Khan on three occasions.

Algieri also feels that he was the aggressor through most of the fight as well. The judges felt differently, giving Khan the victory by the scores of 115-113, 117-111 and 117-111.

Khan: Mayweather has the style that will suit me; who else is out there for him?

EW5G7234(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Despite failing to put in the impressive performance that fans felt that he needed to in order to get a Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September, Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) said he feels satisfied with his win over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) last night, and he believes he’s rightfully earned the fight against Mayweather.

Further, Khan thinks he’ll have an easier time against Mayweather than he did Algieri because his fighting style suits him. Never the less, Khan did not look good in beating Algieri in their fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In the main event, Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) scored a crafty and hard fought unanimous decision over Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) and Javier Fortuna (28-0-1, 20 KOs) won a crowd-pleasing unanimous decision victory over Bryan Vasquez (34-2, 18 KOs) in the televised opener.

Below are comments made by the televised fighters after their performances tonight:

AMIR KHAN

Has Khan’s flaws earned him a fight with Mayweather Jnr?

EW5G6706(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Robbie Bannatyne: We learned many things from the Amir Khan vs. Chris Algieri fight last night. Chiefly, Algieri is way better than we thought while Amir Khan is definitely not as good as he thinks he is.

Also, if you were watching the bout on Box Nation you will have discovered that scoring a boxing match is a highly subjective business. Far from being the mismatch many fans perceived the fight to be, it was a closely fought and competitive contest which the Bolton boxer did just about enough to win.

Khan: I want Mayweather next, let’s make it happen

EW5G5991(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) definitely didn’t impress tonight in the eyes of many boxing fans in beating a guy that was tailor-made for him in Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision, but that didn’t stop Khan from still calling out Floyd Mayweather Jr. for a payday fight in September.

What was really troubling tonight was how Algieri was able to time Khan and hurt him on a number of occasions with right hands. I counted three separate times that Algieri had Khan hurt. Algieri lost the fight, but he won the event in my eyes. It really pains me to say this but Khan looked absolutely dreadful tonight. I don’t know how he worked up the nerve to call out Mayweather after the fight. The way Khan looked when he was calling him out was like someone who knew he didn’t fight well enough to call him out.

Khan decisions Algieri, wants Mayweather next

EW5G6059(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Allan Fox: Former IBF/WBA 140lb champion Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) defeated 140lb contender Chris Algieri (20-2, 8 KOs) by a harder than expected 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night on Spike TV on Premier Boxing Champions from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. the final judges’ scores were 115-113, 117-111, and 117-111. Khan was definitely stunned at least two, possibly three times by hard right hands from Algieri.

Once Algieri settled in to putting pressure on Khan, he was able to hit him a lot with right hands to the head. To Khan’s credit, he was able to take the blows, but he also wasn’t facing a real stronger puncher. But it didn’t look good how Khan’s head would snap back violently each time Algieri would ring his bell with clean right hands. Algieri wasn’t looking to throw a lot of punches like he’s done in some of his fights.

Khan: A bad performance will cause the Mayweather fight go out the window

YouTube video

By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (30-3, 19 KOs) is coming into tonight’s fight against Chris Algieri (20-1, 8 KOs) with a lot of worry that he might not shine and will lose the chance to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September. Khan still thinks he has a chance for that fight even though he’s been given no real signs that he’ll be next in line for the American star.

Without any hints from Mayweather, Khan is literally flying blind for this fight tonight against the 31-year-old Algieri, and all he can do is try to look his best in beating the former WBO 140lb champ.
