Image: Is age catching up with Sergio Martinez?By Gerardo Granados: The new World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight champion southpaw Argentinean Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez has been reported to need surgery on his right knee to repair torn ligaments and broken meniscus, injuries that may have resulted from his fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Sergio also broke his left hand and being a southpaw this is his strong arm and most useful weapon.

Of course it won’t matter how old or young you are to break your hand if the hand wraps are not right or if you hit the forehead or an elbow. But obviously when you grow older it will be more probable to break a bone.

A fighter better keep on his mind that God will forgive him but father time “Kronos” never will. The veteran multiple division champion Bernard Hopkins injured his shoulder from a fall from which a young lion would have just stand up to fight. Martinez is 37 years old and will turn 38 next February; he debuted back in December 1997 and has already 15 years as a prize fighter. His record W50 (28)-L2-D2.

You could analyze on a separate topic Martinez´s chin, because once he traded against Chavez Jr. who is not a power puncher he ended up knocked down clearly hurt, but maybe Sergio has never had a granite chin.

Is it possible that finally Sergio is getting old? Would it be unusual for a 27 year old fighter to suffer the same kind of injuries, maybe for a young lion but for a veteran fighter it is not. Sergio is really skilled and experienced but his body may have started to betray him and this factor cannot be taken lightly by the veteran who has to plan his boxing career seeking to obtain big purses before “Kronos” knock him out of the sport. Problem for him is that according to a member of his training team Sampson Lewkowickz the middleweight champion won’t fight until next year in order to properly heal from his injuries.

How unfair would it be to become a boxing star when you are already old, wouldn´t it?
