Sergio Martinez: Chavez Jr. showed a lack of respect for Roach and the fans

By Dan Ambrose: WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez was thoroughly disgusted by what he saw of former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s training methods in watching him prepare for their fight last Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada. Martinez felt that Chavez Jr. didn’t give it his all, and that he didn’t approach his training camp in the right manner for him to be successful.

Martinez said “I saw him [Chavez Jr] like everyone else did. He showed a lack of respect for the sport and to his trainer Freddie Roach. It’s a lack of respect that he showed to the fans who paid to see a pay per view fight, to pay to see you work. It’s a total lack of responsibility is what I saw.”

It’s easy to see why Martinez would be so upset with what he saw of Chavez Jr’s training for the fight because Martinez has always lived a Spartan-like existence, especially in training camp. He works nonstop and puts out a huge amount of effort in training. He goes past the pain barrier and is able to get in tip top shape for all of his fights. To see Chavez Jr. blowing off training sessions, leaving his trainer Freddie Roach hanging, it disgusted Martinez.

In the end it was Martinez’s excellent training that was the difference in this fight. Martinez was able to totally dominate Chavez Jr. for 11 rounds and then make it through the 12th after Chavez Jr. was able to knock him down. Martinez conditioning and mind was so strong that he was able to get back to his feet and continue fighting hard despite being badly hurt by the bigger Chavez Jr.

A Martinez-Chavez Jr. rematch has taken a setback earlier today by the news that Chavez Jr. has tested positive for Marijuana for his test results from last Saturday’s fight. Chavez Jr. now faces a possible length suspension as well as a huge fine.
