Broner vs. Malignaggi

By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns really blew his big chance to land a unification fight against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) when he had the opportunity to get that fight, because it’s now looking more and more like Broner will be facing WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) on June 22nd.

According to Fighthype, HBO wants the Broner vs. Malignaggi fight after having lost Floyd Mayweather Jr. to Showtime/CBS, and they need Broner at welterweight, not lightweight for him to get the big numbers that Mayweather was getting.

By Eric Thomas: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner’s adviser Al Haymon and trainer Mike Stafford both have given their approval of a fight between Broner and WBA World welterweight Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, KO’s), according to Gabriel Montoya. The fight will take place in June, likely on the 22nd at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Malignaggi is reportedly eager to take the fight if he’s given a big enough payday in the process. HBO reportedly wants the fight as well, and that right there could be enough to make this a reality.

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) says he expects to be facing WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) next, according to Steve Kim. The fight will take place on June 22nd at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told Dan Rafael of ESPN “Paulie told me he is interested, and HBO likes that fight. People will like that fight. Paulie did tell me he would take it. He’s not sure if Broner would take it. I put it to Al Haymon [Broner’s manager] to talk to Adrien. I think it would be a very interesting fight.”

By Scott Gilfoid: If Adrien Broner’s trainer Mike Stafford has his way, Broner will be facing WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) in June at welterweight rather than having Broner waste time trying to chase WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, who Stafford believes doesn’t want any part of Broner.

Stafford said to Nyfightblog at ESPN “If Paulie think Adrien’s not a welterweight…Adrien spars with middleweights. That fight [Malignaggi vs. Broner] sounds good…Adrien would come in around 141, 142. I’d rather have it in Brooklyn than in Abu Dhabi…I say June.”

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) was recently offered a fight against Adrien Broner by Golden Boy Promotions, and Malignaggi says he’s definitely interested in that bout if he gets a big payday out of it. Malignaggi missed out on a nice payday bout against Ricky Hatton after Hatton was stopped in his brief comeback by Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Malignaggi said to RingTV “We’ll get it on for the right price and under the right circumstances, being that it would be for the welterweight world title. I would fight him, absolutely.”

Malignaggi has a fight scheduled on June 22nd at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, while Broner is scheduled a week earlier on June 15th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

By Scott Gilfoid: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) is saying that Golden Boy Promotions offered him a title defense against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in June in a fight that would take place at welterweight.

Malignaggi says he’s interested in the fight, but the World Boxing Association has already ordered him to defend his WBA title against Diego Chaves in a fight that could possibly take place in Abu Dhabi for some reason. Why Malingaggi, an American citizen, would fight there is anyone’s guess.

By Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer really needs an opponent for WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi after all the big plans they had in store for him in facing Ricky Hatton went up in smoke last Saturday night with Hatton’s loss to Senchenko.

Malignaggi wants that one big name for him to fight so he can get a nice payday, but Schaefer unfortunately doesn’t have a lot of choices to put in with Malignaggi. Schaefer says he could look to the lightweight division to have his young star WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner move up two divisions to face Malignaggi.
