Stiverne can’t wait to beat Arreola to get WBC title

OTTAWA, Canada (January 2, 2014) – On his mission to become the first Haitian-born heavyweight champion of the world, World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver champion Bermane “B. Ware” Stiverne (23-1, 20 KOs) still doesn’t know exactly when and where he will be fighting for the vacant WBC heavyweight world title.

After patiently waiting 2 ½ years as the mandatory challenger, though, the 34-year-old Stiverne understands that he will be in his first world title fight sometime during the first-quarter of 2014 – date, place and network to be determined – in a rematch with Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (36-3, 31 KOs).

Deontay willing to fight Tony Thompson if Stiverne fight doesn’t happen

deontay755By Scott Gilfoid: #3 WBC Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) is hoping that his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can line up a fight for the vacant WBC heavyweight title against #1 WBC Bermane Stiverne (23-1-1, 20 KO’s) once WBC heavyweight title holder Vitali Klitschko vacates his title or is stripped of his belt by the WBC for failing to defend it in over a year.

If Vitali decides to keep defending the belt, then Deontay says he wants to fight former heavyweight title challenger Tony Thompson (38-4, 26 KO’s) to keep busy while he waits for his eventual shot against the WBC title.

Deontay could fight Stiverne for WBC heavyweight title in 2014

wilder-destroys-firthaBy Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight Deontay Wilder (30-0, 30 KO’s) entered the 30 knockout club last night with his blasting out of game Nicolai Firtha (21-11-1, 8 KO’s) in four rounds at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was a very impressive performance from the 6’7″ Deontay with him knocked Firtha down three times with some beautiful shots to the head. The punches that Firtha got up from would have surely knocked out a lesser heavyweight.

With this victory, Deontay’s promoter Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions is eying the WBC heavyweight title currently held by Vitali Klitschko. Schaefer expects that belt to be freed up now in early 2014 now that Vitali has announced that he’s going to run for the president of Ukraine.

Vitali Klitschko suffers hand injury, will miss remainder of 2013

vitali9By Allan Fox: It’s already been 11 months since WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KO’s) last defended his World Boxing Council title in an optional title defense against Manuel Charr last September, and now it looks like it’s going to be a lot longer before he defends his trap because the 42-year-old fighter reportedly has injured his right hand in training.

The injury will require the 42-year-old Vitali to miss the remainder of 2013, and his mandatory challenger, #1 WBC, Bermane Stiverne is not pleased about it. He wants his title shot, and he’s tired of waiting for Vitali to get around to finally defending his WBC title.

Ward vs. Pavlik, Arreola vs. Stiverne possible for March 2nd in Carson, California

ward55By Allan Fox: The Andre Ward vs. Kelly Pavlik and Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne bouts could wind up being moved to March 2nd at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, according to Steve Kim. The Arreola – Stiverne bout is currently scheduled for February 23rd at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California, but it get moved to be put on the undercard of Pavlik-Ward on March 2nd.

WBA/WBA super middleweight champion Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) injured his shoulder recently while training, and that made it necessary to push back his previously scheduled July 26th title defense against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KO’s). As long as Ward’s shoulder heals up the March 2nd date could be the one that they end up fighting on, but shoulder injuries sometimes can linger for many months if proper rest and rehabilitation isn’t done.

Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko’s titles: The Ignored Contenders

Image: Fringe contenders to Wladimir Klitschko's titles: The Ignored Contenders2012 was quite a busy year for Wladimir Klitschko. The quality of the opposition he faced was  poor as  Jean Marc Mormeck, Tony Thompson and Mariusz Wach are hardly considered exciting match ups. Amongst the supposed mismatches the Polish warrior Mariusz Wach was the sole surprise, in a lopsided 12 round beating he showed a granite chin and seemingly unbreakable resolve.  He could be the fighter to watch for 2013.

Klitschko also lost a great friend and mentor in Emmanuel Steward. Nothing I can say could begin to capture the magic behind this man, and his effect on Wladimir,Lewis and Hearns in the past. The loss of a mentor is painful, although this was shown to be a motivator for Wladimir and also Jonathan Banks who won a surprise 2nd round KO against American prospect Seth Mitchell.

Arreola vs. Stiverne on December 15th in WBC heavyweight eliminator bout

Image: Arreola vs. Stiverne on December 15th in WBC heavyweight eliminator boutBy Allan Fox: #1 WBC Chris Arreola (35-2, 30 KO’s) and #2 WBC Bermane Stiverne (22-1-1, 20 KO’s) will be facing each on December 15th in a WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator at a still to be determined venue. The winner of the Arreola-Stiverne fight will become the mandatory challenger to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. With Vitali possibly retiring at any time, the winner of the Arreola vs. Stiverne fight could wind up the WBC heavyweight champion in the near future, possibly by early 2013.

That’s kid of a scary thought because both Stiverne and Arreola are far from solid choices to hold down the World Boxing Council title for any length of time unless they’re matched selectively.
