By Dan Ambrose: If former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) is going to be ready for his fight next month on April 18th against Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs), Chavez Jr is going to need to lose a lot of weight to be ready for the catch-weight fight at 172 pounds.

In a photo the 28-year-old Chavez Jr posted on his Instragram on Sunday, Chavez Jr looks very, very heavy. My guess is Chavez Jr is weighing at least 200 pounds, possibly a little more.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Andrzej Fonfara: Will this fight sell tickets on 4/18?

chavez012By Dan Ambrose: For his third straight fight, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) is picking out a less than popula opponent when he returns to the ring on April 18th against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) in their fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

In Chavez Jr’s last two fights, he fought middleweight journeyman Brian Vera in fights at light heavyweight in a catch-weight at 173 and at super middleweight. Those weren’t highly popular fights, and Chavez Jr fought well enough to deserve a loss in the first fight with Vera.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs. Andrzej Fonfara at 172lb catch-weight on 4/18 at StubHub Center, Carson, CA

chavez92By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) will be having his next fight at a catch-weight of 172 pounds against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) on April 18th at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It’s unclear if the Chavez Jr-Fonfara fight will go ahead though, as Chavez Jr’s former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank says that Chavez Jr is still under contract with his company for one more fight. Arum has been talking about having the Chavez Jr-Fonfara fight blocked legally.

Chavez Jr: Bob Arum can’t stop my fight with Fonfara

chavez65By Dan Ambrose: It’s been 11 months since the last time former WBC 160 pound champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (48-1-1, 32 KOs) last fought, and it’ll be over a year by the time he faces #4 WBC light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) in their catch-weight fight on April 18th, if Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum doesn’t stop the fight from taking place.

Arum has repeatedly said recently that Chavez Jr still has one more fight on his contract with Top Rank, and that if he attempts to fight outside of his contract, he’ll get an injunction to halt the fight from taking place. However, Chavez Jr., 28, is saying that he’s checked with his lawyers and that he thinks Arum can’t do anything to stop his fight with Fonfara from taking place.

Fonfara struggles to defeat Ngumbu; Kameda decisions Hernandez

fonfara7By Jim Dower: #6 WBC light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) had to struggle hard on Saturday night to defeat little known 32-year-old Doudou Ngumbu (33-6, 12 KOs) by an unimpressive 10 round unanimous decision at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

Fonfara was hit constantly by the quicker Ngumbu, and he was fortunate that the France-based fighter ran out of gas. As it was, Fonfara took a lot of punishment, and ended up with a reddened face a bloody nose. The final judges’ scores were 98-92, 97-93, and 97-93.

Fonfara with difficult task tonight against Stevenson

StevensonFonfara-2001By Dan Ambrose: #1 WBO, #3 WBC, Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) has his work really cut out for him this Saturday night against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) in their Showtime televised bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Stevenson is a huge favorite in this fight for a good reason.

He’s been knocking out arguably better opposition than Fonfara for a while now and looking almost unbeatable. If there is a better fighter in the division then we haven’t seen him yet, because Stevenson appears to be the real deal. As for Fonfara, he’s pretty much a doomed fighter at this point unless he can find some kind of weakness in Stevenson’s armor that he can take advantage of.
