Fonfara with difficult task tonight against Stevenson

StevensonFonfara-2001By Dan Ambrose: #1 WBO, #3 WBC, Andrzej Fonfara (25-2, 15 KO’s) has his work really cut out for him this Saturday night against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20 KO’s) in their Showtime televised bout at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada. Stevenson is a huge favorite in this fight for a good reason.

He’s been knocking out arguably better opposition than Fonfara for a while now and looking almost unbeatable. If there is a better fighter in the division then we haven’t seen him yet, because Stevenson appears to be the real deal. As for Fonfara, he’s pretty much a doomed fighter at this point unless he can find some kind of weakness in Stevenson’s armor that he can take advantage of.

From what I can see the only area where Stevenson shows to be vulnerable is when his opponents crowd him and flurry. Stevenson tends to flurry back and he can be hit during that time. But if you let him work at a slow pace, he’s going to rip you apart with single shots.

Fonfara has long arms and he doesn’t seem to be capable of fighting the style needed for him to have any real chance at beating Stevenson. Fonfara’s too slow and deliberate to match up in this fight, and unless he overhauls his game completely and comes out swinging from the open bell. The chances of Fonfara doing that are not good, because his fighting style is pretty well established at this point in his career.

Fonfara has faced limited opposition during his career in fights against Glen Johnson at the end of his career, Gabriel Campillo late in his career, Derrick Findley, and Tommy Karpency. Findley stopped Fonfara, Campillo had him badly hurt before getting stopped, and Johnson fought well enough to deserve a victory in a fight that saw Fonfara win by a less than impressive 10 round decision 2 years ago.
