dawson6787By Allan Fox: A fight between former WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson (32-3, 18 KOs) and former world title challenger Andrzej Fonfara (25-3, 15 KOs) is being talked about at 175, according to Steve Kim.

Dawson, 32, is trying to rebuild his career after having suffered knockout defeats to Andre Ward and Adonis Stevenson. Dawson won his last fight by a 1st round knockout against George Blades in a fight in the cruiserweight division last June at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

It wasn’t the best opponent and Dawson looked flabby and out of shape for the fight. For him to fight a guy as good as Fonfara, Dawson will need to be in top condition, because he’s a quality fighter capable of beating Dawson if he’s not 100%.

#5 WBC Fonfara lost his last fight to Stevenson in May in getting beaten by a 12 round unanimous decision. Fonfara knocked Stevenson down in the fight, and gave him a lot of problems with his pressure in the last 6 rounds. But Fonfara was hurt a number of times with body shots by Stevenson, and he didn’t have the power or the needed punch resistance to the body for him to pull off the victory.

Kim said “A fight I’m told that is being discussed is Fonfara vs Dawson at lt heavy.”

Dawson still has a ton of skills despite his losses to Stevenson and Ward, and he’s capable of winning another world title at 175 and holding down the title as long as he’s more careful about his defense and how he fights. Dawson could end up out-boxing Fonfara if that fight is made.

In the Blades fight, Dawson showed his old power in knocking him down twice. Dawson’s body punching was excellent and he looked very good strong at the weight. Whether Dawson will be able to keep his strength after he melts off the flab is the major question. As long as he’s not weight drained like he was in the Andre Ward fight, he should be capable of out-boxing Fonfara.
