Oscar De La Hoya: Victor Ortiz should call it a day

By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is recommending that the birthday body Victor Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO’s) think about hanging up his gloves and going in another direction following his crushing 2nd round defeat last Thursday night against the light-hitting Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Ortiz, by the way, turns 27 today. What a day to celebrate his birthday.

Collazo humiliates Victor Ortiz in stopping him in 2nd round

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (January 31) – It’s a super week in New York City and several of the five boroughs’ finest boxing talent showed their super skills Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The action culminated with a surprising second round knockout of former WBC Welterweight World Champion “Vicious” Victor Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO’s) as a result of a right hook thrown by WBA International Welterweight Champion and Brooklyn native Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s).

“I had no doubt in my mind that I was going to win,” said Collazo. “I went through hard times and maybe I wasn’t ready before, but I was ready today.

Collazo stops Victor Ortiz in 2nd round TKO!

ortiz2By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s career may be over after he was shockingly knocked out in the 2nd round on Thurday night by Luis Collazo (35-5, 18 KO’s) at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Late in the 2nd round, Ortiz (29-5-2, 22 KO’s) landed a left hook that was countered by Collazo with a big right hook that badly stunned Ortiz, causing him to turn around and bend over. Collazo then nailed Ortiz with a grazing left hook and another right hand to the head that put Ortiz down on the canvas. He was then countered out at 2:59 of the round.

Victor Ortiz vs. Luis Collazo tonight in do-or-die fight

OrtizCollazoWeighIn_Hoganphotos4(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: Whether former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) wants to admit it to himself or not his fight against Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) is a do-or-die type of a fight for him with his career basically being on the line when the two fighters face each other in this 12 round bout at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

Ortiz, 27, has lost his last two fights, and if he loses this third straight fight then it’ll be almost impossible for him to climb out of that kind of hole. His promoters at Golden Boy will no doubt be looking to try anything possible to sell Ortiz to the boxing public by matching him against the type of weak opponents that they fed to Amir Khan recently in bringing him back from career downfall, but if Ortiz can’t even beat the likes of Collazo then there’s really no point in Golden Boy persisting in trying to bring Ortiz back.

It’ll be over for him. Tonight’s Collazo fight is the equivalent of Golden Boy tossing a slow under-handed pitch to Ortiz for him to try and hit it out of the park. But if he whiffs on this easy pitch, then Golden Boy might be best to cut their losses and go in another direction by cutting Ortiz loose from their promotional stable.

Weights: Ortiz 146.6, Collazo 146.6

OrtizCollazoWeighIn_Hoganphotos1(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Jim Dower: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) successfully weighed in today for his fight against Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) on Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Ortiz weighed in at 146.6 lbs. and looked slightly thin like he had to struggle to come in at the weight. His opponent Collazo also came in at 146.6 lbs., but he looked healthier and more suited to the weight.

While Ortiz bristles at the talk of this fight being a comeback for him, it has to be seen that way because Ortiz is coming off of a long year and half layoff, and he’s lost his last two fights. It’s definitely a comeback fight for the 27-year-old Ortiz with a lot riding on it.

Victor Ortiz wants Mayweather rematch after Collazo fight

ortiz34By Dan Ambrose: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) hasn’t even gotten past his opponent Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s), who he faces on Thursday night, and already Ortiz is talking about wanting a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ortiz was stopped by Mayweather in the 4th round in September 2011, and the loss still doesn’t sit right with Ortiz due to the way he lost the fight.

Ortiz was halted when he dropped his guard in the 4th to try and hug Mayweather after Ortiz had lost a point for a head-butt. Mayweather decided to play dirty too, so he nailed Ortiz with a left-right combination while he was in the process of trying to hug him for the second time. Ortiz went down from the shots and was unable to get back to his feet in time to beat the count.

Victor Ortiz faces Luis Collazo this Thursday, Jan. 30th in Brooklyn, New York

ortiz454By Dan Ambrose: In his long awaited comeback, former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) will be in the ring this Thursday night against 32-year-old former WBA 147 lb. champion Luis Collazo (34-5, 17 KO’s) in a fight between two guys that have seen better days at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York, USA. Ortiz will be turning 27-years-old this Friday, and while it’s hard to see him as an over-the-hill fighter, it’s still difficult not to put him in that category based on his last two fights [both losses] and his long layoff from the ring.

Ortiz was injured in his loss to Josesito Lopez in his last fight in June of 2012 in suffering a fractured jaw. But instead of taking just enough time off for this jaw to heal, Ortiz took a year and half off, and he’s now returning to the ring as a forgotten fighter in a division that has improved dramatically since the last time Ortiz fought in it.
