39-year-old Shannon Briggs to resume his boxing career

Image: 39-year-old Shannon Briggs to resume his boxing careerBy Eric Thomas: Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KO’s) is reportedly about to resume his boxing career after sitting idle since his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last October. Briggs, 39, tore his left bicep, and suffered a fractured left orbital bone and broken nose in that fight. The bicep required surgery to repair the problem.

Chisora calls Briggs an “Embarrassment to boxing”

By Dave Lahr: I just saw video of the press conference between IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KO’s) and his next opponent Derek Chisora (14-0, 9 KO’s) in Germany. Chisora called Shannon Briggs an “Embarrassment to boxing” because he was beaten by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last weekend. I’d like to see how Chisora would fight with a torn left biceps. He should try that out for a change. He can come back at 38, then experience a tear in his left biceps and then fight for 12 rounds with it. I’d like to see how well Chisora does fighting with that kind of injury at that advanced age.

Briggs says “If it wasn’t for this [injured left] arm, I’d be heavyweight champion of the world”

Image: Briggs says "If it wasn't for this [injured left] arm, I'd be heavyweight champion of the world"By Dave Lahr: Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KO’s) isn’t ready to concede anything to World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s). Briggs, 38, speaking to the German news organization Bild, said “If it wasn’t this arm, I’d be heavyweight champion of the world.” Briggs ended up with multiple injuries in the fight, suffering two fractured cheeks, a broken nose and a torn left biceps. Briggs lost the fight to Klitschko by a lopsided 12 round decision last Saturday night O2 World Arena, Altona, in Hamburg, Germany. The fight was extremely one-sided to the point where it was almost painful to watch after the 7th round. Over and over again, Vitali landed crushing right hands that hit with full force to the head of Briggs.

Briggs says he suffered his bicep injury in the 1st round agaisnt Vitali

Image: Briggs says he suffered his bicep injury in the 1st round agaisnt VitaliBy Eric Thomas: Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KO’s) took a real pounding to WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) in Briggs’ failed attempt to capture another world title in Hamburg, Germany. Briggs, 28, paid a huge price for his challenge by suffering a bad left biceps tear, a broken nose and a fractured orbital bone under his left eye. In a press release sent from Briggs’ team, he says “I never gave up, even when my breathing was out of order and my arm injury kept me from being 100%.” I had known about the arm injury, but Briggs’ breathing problems are a new one. It must have been really bad for Briggs, because not only was his arm torn at the bicep, but he was also having problems breathing. And, of course, Vitali was really laying into Briggs with powerful right hands and constantly on the attack during the 12 round fight.

Briggs should have pressured Vitali more

By Jason Kim: Former WBO heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs took the wrong approach for his fight with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko last Saturday night in Briggs’ failed attempt to capture Vitali’s title. Instead of going all out and risking getting knocked out early by putting massive amounts of pressure on Vitali, Briggs instead was content to take a partial approach to attacking Vitali.

Haye says “I’ll get to the Klitschkos when I’m ready” – dismisses Vitali’s win over Briggs

Image: Haye says "I'll get to the Klitschkos when I'm ready" - dismisses Vitali's win over BriggsBy William Mackay: WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) wasn’t shaking in his boots over World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko’s win over Shannon Briggs (51-6-1, 45 KO’s) last Saturday night. Haye, 30, who has a fight coming up against his hand picked opponent 38-year-old Audley Harrison on November 13th, had this to say in an article at the Telegraph.co.uk: “I’m not worrying about old timers like Briggs. he is years past his best. I am sharper than ever, and I’ll get to the Klitschkos when I’m ready. For now, I’m focused on sending Audley Harrison down a one-way street with no return.” What jumps out at me in reading Haye’s comments is that he seems to be under the impression that he’s calling the shots for the fights with the Klitschko brothers.
