Mosley: Golovkin & Marvilla are too big for Canelo

martinez7 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: “Sugar” Shane Mosley doesn’t think WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has the size to compete against the likes of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

Mosley, who lost to Canelo last year by a 12 round unanimous decision, says he doesn’t see Canelo as a big 154 pound fighter. He sees him as small for that weight class, and he doesn’t like his chances against the bigger Martinez and Golovkin if those fights were made.

Mosley: Malignaggi seems to be afraid to fight me

mosley5445By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) believes that WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) is genuinely afraid to fight him after Malignaggi suddenly decided to halt negotiations with him and look in another direction.

Malignaggi is now talking about wanting to fight #2 WBA Marcos Maidana. However, the World Boxing Association ordered Malignaggi to fight #1 WBA Diego Chavez next. Golden Promotions, the promoters for Malignaggi, are going to have to work with the WBA to see if Malignaggi can bypass Chavez for one fight so that Malignaggi can fight whoever he wants on his next fight date on April 27th at the Barclays Center in Brookly, New York.

mosley3334By Dan Ambrose: Kevin Cunningham, the trainer for IBF welterweight champion Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KO’s), likes the idea of Alexander facing 41-year-old Shane Mosley if Alexander is able to successfully defend his title next month against unbeaten challenger Kell Brook (29-0, 19 KO’s) on February 23rd in Detroit, Michigan.

Cunningham told ringtv “Why not Shane?…We would love to oblige Shane with a shot at Devon’s IBF title. We would like to extend an invitation to Shane to come on out to Detroit on February 23rd and to sit at ringside for out fight.”

Mosley-Malignaggi fight in jeopardy; Paulie wants Maidana on April 27th

malignaggi34By Scott Gilfoid: Well it looks like the Shane Mosley vs. Paulie Malignaggi fight may not be happening on April 27th after all. According to Steve Kim, the fight is in jeopardy for some reason and it may not happen. Instead of fighting the soon to be 42-year-old Mosley, Malignaggi now reportedly wants to face his #2 WBA contender Marcos Maidana.

Steve Kim at Maxboxing.com said this on his twitter today: “Richard Schaefer says that Mosley-Malignaggi is in jeopardy and may not happen after all on April 27th…. #boxing. Paulie actually sounded a tad relieved he wasn’t going to face Mosley, realized it was a classic no-win situation #boxing. Paulie Malignaggi on the Shane Mosley fight falling apart,”Let’s make the Marcos Maidana fight.”

Mosley hoping a win over Malignaggi will lead to big fights

mosley2312By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) got a really lucky break when Ricky Hatton was beaten by former WBA welterweight champion Vyacheslav Senchenko last November in Hatton’s ill-fated comeback in Manchester, England.

If Hatton had won that fight he was going to get a title shot against WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) this year. Mosley saw the Hatton-Senchenko fight, as soon as he saw that Hatton was beaten, he got the idea of making a play for the Malignaggi fight by asking Golden Boy Promotions if they would be interested in having him fight Malignaggi.

Schaefer: Mosley deserves the fight with Malignaggi

mosley43443By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) will be getting what many boxing fans feel is an undeserved title shot against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) on April 27th on Showtime.

While many boxing fans are turned off at the thought of Mosley getting the fight with Malignaggi, you can’t say the same for Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. He likes the idea of them fight, and he thinks Mosley deserves the fight.

Schaefer said to espn “Paulie and I deserved the opportunity to fight for a world title again. He has accomplished so much and thrilled fight fans in so many fights, so I am happy to give him this opportunity.”

Mosley-Malignaggi agree to a fight on April 27th

mosley3344334By Allan Fox: WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) and 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) have reportedly agreed on a fight scheduled for April 27th at the Barclays Center, Brooklyn, New York, USA.

According to RingTV, the two fighters have agreed verbally but haven’t yet signed anything. Steve Bash, the lawyer for Malignaggi, is waiting for a few details to be “worked out” before they will be ready to go. But it looks good right now.

Mosley is pretty excited about getting the fight, saying to RingTV “Winning this [fight] and doing three, four or five more fights. I want to make a couple of more title defenses.”

Malignaggi vs. Mosley possible for April 27th

malignaggi454By Dan Ambrose: A fight between WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) and soon to 42-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) is being talked about for April 27th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. This has the makings of a cash out fight. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer wants the fight and he’s already made it clear to Maxboxing.com writer Steve Kim that this is the last chance he’ll give Mosley. If he doesn’t produce in this fight he says he won’t promote him any longer.

That obviously doesn’t matter because Mosley will still find fights even if Malignaggi beats him, which at this point is hard to imagine after looking at how badly Malignaggi struggled in his last fight against 23-year-old Pablo Cesar Cano last October in winning a controversial 12 round split decision.

Mayweather’s return to the ring, Austin Trout, Malignaggi-Mosley & more!

floyd56By Tom Drury: A lot has happened during the last six weeks in boxing, as the last year has been wound up and we enter the new one. I wanted to share my opinion on the main topics currently going on in the sport, from Floyd Mayweather’s next opponent to Juan Manuel Marquez and his magic trick. I am going to share my thoughts on several topics in bullet point style, enjoy it or hate it; here are my thoughts on the current affairs of boxing.

1. Austin Trout – two names have been thrown about for Mayweather’s return to the ring on May 4: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, while Trout has been totally dismissed. Guerrero has beaten Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto at welterweight while Canelo has defeated Josesito Lopez and Shane Mosley up at junior-middleweight in his last two fights. Neither fight is terrible nor I would like to see both. However, a fight with Mayweather would be a quantum leap in regards to level of opposition for Alvarez.
