Schaefer: Mosley deserves the fight with Malignaggi

mosley43443By Dan Ambrose: 41-year-old Shane Mosley (46-8-1, 39 KO’s) will be getting what many boxing fans feel is an undeserved title shot against WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (32-4, 7 KO’s) on April 27th on Showtime.

While many boxing fans are turned off at the thought of Mosley getting the fight with Malignaggi, you can’t say the same for Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. He likes the idea of them fight, and he thinks Mosley deserves the fight.

Schaefer said to espn “Paulie and I deserved the opportunity to fight for a world title again. He has accomplished so much and thrilled fight fans in so many fights, so I am happy to give him this opportunity.”

Mosley hasn’t won a fight in four years, and it’s so sad that Schaefer is willing to give Mosley another opportunity just because of how good he was in the past. It’s obvious the only reason he’s putting this fight together is because Mosley has a more recognizable name than the other guys Golden Boy could have found for Malignaggi.

This fight will be a headliner on the April 27th card, so this is as good as it gets and that’s pretty sad. If Mosley can beat Malignaggi, which is definitely possible given how terrible Malignaggi looked against his last opponent Pablo Cesar Cano, then Schaefer will have the chance to match Mosley up against one of the better fighters in the division.

I don’t know who at this point he can get because Mosley has already faced and been soundly beaten by the top fighters in boxing – Floyd Mayweather Jr, Manny Pacquiao and Saul Alvarez – in the last three years. Schaefer isn’t going to be able to get any of those guys to agree to fight Mosley again because it was way too one-sided when they beat him.

Mosley has excuses for why he looked so poor against Alvarez, Mayweather and Pacquiao, saying to espn “My legs were dead. I couldn’t move like I wanted to and I was throwing one shot at a time.”

That just sounds like age and ring wear showing their negative effects on Mosley. Too many hard fights combined with old age has really slowed him down.
