Judah vs. Mosley Canceled

judah55445.jpgBy Eric Thomas: In a bit of bad news, former light welterweight and welterweight champion Zab Judah (36-5, 25 KOs) has reportedly suffered an injury to his right forearm, making it necessary to have 50 stitches applied to the wound, and because of that Judah’s May 31st bout with Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) has been cancelled for the time being. There’s no word at this time as to when the fight will be rescheduled, but there are already talks undergoing for plans for a future date for the fight to take place.

This is particularly bad news for both fighters, perhaps even more for the 30 year-old Judah, for he’s been going through a rough period in his career having lost three out of his last six fights to opponents Carlos Baldomir, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto. There’s nothing wrong with losing to those kinds of fights, but the fact remains that there’s been little to be happy about in Judah’s career since 2005 when he was the IBF/WBA/WBC welterweight champion of the world. Since that time, Judah has experienced three losses to the aforementioned fighters, including a non contest with Ruben Galvin in April 2007. In his last two fights, Judah has defeated two little known fighters, Edwin Vazquez and Ryan Davis, both fights interesting to watch but clearly a step down for Judah in terms of career bouts.

By Scott Gilfoid: Former welterweight champions Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) and Zab Judah (36-5, 25 KOs) go at it on May 31st at the Mandalay Bay Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both fighters have suffered losses to Miguel Cotto in the past year, and have found themselves in a position where they are each becoming irrelevant tin the welterweight division, especially Judah who has lost three out of his last six bouts. Cotto, 36, still appears to have a little left and could possibly give one of the welterweight champions some problems if he were to get a shot one of the titles.

Neither of them currently have titles, but because of their combined popularity the bout will likely bring in a lot of fans interested in seeing this showdown.

Judah-Mosley: Is Zab Making A Mistake In Taking This Fight?

mosley4634332.jpgBy Dan Ambrose: Though nothing as of yet has been officially confirmed in terms of signings for the perspective March 31st bout between former WBC/WBA/IBF welterweight champion Zab Judah (36-5, 25 KOs) and former lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs), apparently there has been a verbal agreement between the two fighters to meet, according to the latest boxing news.

Both fighters are seemingly at a sticking point in their careers, as neither Mosley or Judah appear to be in the running for a nearby chance at one of the welterweight champions. Of the two, Mosley, 36, appears to have a bit more left in the tank, perhaps good enough to beat International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kermit Cintron or World Boxing Organization champion Paul Williams. Obviously, Cintron would be the easier task, since Williams is thought to be the best of the welterweights at this time, and would be a very tough fight for Mosley given Williams 6’2″ height and long wingspan. Judah, however, is a fighter out of his weight class.

Showing perhaps a sign of desperation, World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Paul Williams (33-0, 24KOs) is already looking beyond his next opponent Carlos Quintana, whom he fights on February 9th, as he said in a recent interview that he is interested in facing Shane Mosley after his bout with Quintana. Williams, 26, previously had a bout with Cintron almost arranged, only to have Cintron decide instead to attempt to set up a fight with Miguel Cotto or a rematch with Antonio Margarito.

Former three-division champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) is reportedly looking for another mega-fight, against either Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather Jr., according to the latest boxing news. Apparently, Mosley has discussed retirement with his wife, Jin, after his close unanimous decision loss to Miguel Cotto on November 10th at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Cotto Receives Gift Decision Over Mosley

cotto44575.jpgWorld Boxing Association welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs) remained unbeaten last night, albeit from a questionable decision, defeating former lightweight and welterweight champion Shane Mosley by unanimous decision last night at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The final judges’ scores were 115-113, 115-113 and 116-113. However, it appeared that the 35 year-old Mosley had beaten Cotto.

At worst, it could have been ruled a draw, as Mosley won most of the 2nd half of the fight, including the championship rounds in which he had Cotto, the champion, running from him. That’s not to say that Cotto didn’t have his moments, because he surely did, particularly in the early rounds of the fight when he was able to land his right hand and left hook to the body with great effectiveness.

Mosely, though, won three of the first six rounds on my scorecard, and four of the last six rounds, hurting Cotto in both the 9th and 10th rounds with right hands. After the sixth round, Mosely began using more movement, choosing to stay on the outside and attack sporatically with flurries.

According to Sentanta Sports, Shane Mosley (44-4, 37 KOs) wants to fight Floyd Mayweather next, saying “I definitely, definitely want Mayweather.” For most, this is a welcome signal from Mosley, 36, as he’s shown little desire in the past with mixing it up with Mayweather. For whatever reason, Mosely has finally decided to man up and start taking on real challenges, instead of the soft opposition, such as Fernando Vargas, Luis Collazo, David Estrada, and Jose Luis Cruz, that Mosley has feasted on in the past two years.

With little under two weeks to go before veteran Shane Mosley (44-4, 37 KOs) takes on undefeated welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (30-0, 25 KOs), there has been a lot of doubters about Cotto’s chances in the bout, mostly due to his advanced age or 35, which will put him a distinct disadvantage against the younger 25-year old Cotto. Though Mosley is a former pound-4-pound fighter, his age and lack of top level competition in recent years will be an issue for him when he steps it up to take on Cotto, who is fighting perhaps the best he ever has in his career. To be sure, Mosley left behind his prime years as long as seven years ago, around the time that he first defeated Oscar Dela Hoya.

World welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, looking fit and trim, came in at 157 pounds today in San Juan for his 30-day pre-fight weigh-in. Cotto was far under the limit for this date and said he is anxious to take on Sugar Shane Mosley at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 10. “I am very satisfied with all of my training and work we have done so far,” Cotto said. “There is no doubt I will be in my best-ever condition on November 10..”
