Mosley Looking For a “Big, Mega-Fight” Against Cotto, Hatton Or Mayweather

Former three-division champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) is reportedly looking for another mega-fight, against either Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton or Floyd Mayweather Jr., according to the latest boxing news. Apparently, Mosley has discussed retirement with his wife, Jin, after his close unanimous decision loss to Miguel Cotto on November 10th at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

“I want the choice fight, one the fans want to see. I’m just going to take a little break to scope out the scene.” Mosley said that if it appears that he’s not going to be in against top fighters like these, he’ll quit. By early next year, Mosley said that he’d make a definite decision about whether or not he’ll continue his boxing career.

At 36, Mosley is still a top draw in the sport, and came surprisingly close to defeating Cotto, whom many sports fans felt would destroy Mosely. However, if Mosley wants to fight any of the aforementioned fighters, he’s going to likely have to wait until at least 2009, because it’s doubtful that Mayweather, Hatton or Cotto will elect to fight him anytime soon. That’s not because they think he’s a bad fighter, mainly it’s due to the fact they’re all still undefeated, and have a lot of fans behind them. Of course, some of that will change once Hatton and Mayweather meet on December 8th.

Yet, I expect Hatton and Mayweather to fight an immediately rematch, if not a bout with Oscar De La Hoya, who badly wants a piece of Hatton. Mosley, of course, could still land a popular second choice opponent, perhaps someone like Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey or Andre Berto. That would be a huge step down, though, in terms of popularity, and money, but at least Mosley would be able to stay busy and still be able to fight a top opponent while he waits for Hatton, Mayweather or Cotto to free up some time for him.
