Margarito vs. Mosley in Janaury – Look For Shane To Take a Terrible Beating

margo452345.jpgBy Jim Dower: If Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs) was in need of a big payday, he probably could have found a much easier way of doing it than facing World Boxing Association welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (37-5, 27 KOs), whom he’ll be facing in January, with the winner rumored to be fighting Miguel Cotto in the Summer. Mosley, 27, has already been beaten by Cotto in November 2007, and his chances of beating Margarito, a fighter that is coming off of an 11th-round TKO of Cotto in July.

However, for Mosley to go from Ricardo Mayorga into a fight with Margarito seems almost suicidal on his part. Mosley looked terrible against Mayorga, unable to pull the trigger for most of the bout, getting hit constantly and tiring out in the latter part of the fight. If not for the stoppage, I had Mayorga winning the fight handily. Given that Mayorga was considered by many boxing fans to be a shot fighter going into his fight with Mosley, it wasn’t exactly confidence instilling to see Mosley struggle for the entire bout.

Mosley Needs To Retire

mosley3323445.jpgBy Aaron Klein: Although Shane Mosley may take comfort in the fact that he was able to stop Ricardo Mayorga with one second to go in the 12th round last Saturday night, I think he’s kidding himself if he believes that he can still be competitive against the best welterweights or light middleweights in the division. Mosley, 37, had been expected to wipe the deck with Mayorga going into his fight with him, and while that may have been a little bit too much to count on for a fighter who hadn’t set foot in the ring for almost a year, he was at least expected to be good enough to be leading the fight going into the 12th and final round.

Unfortunately for Mosley, he appeared well behind on the fight at the time of the stoppage, and badly in need of a miracle knockout to save him from defeat. Two of the judges’ scores were silly, because Mosley appeared to be losing the fight by a wide margin, and looked like he couldn’t pull the trigger anymore. In the last round, Mosley finally showed some of his old skills for long enough to drop a sloppy Mayorga, who was fighting wildly as if he were the one behind in the fight. Mayorga was in bad shape after getting up from the initial knockdown, and within seconds he was put down with a left hook from Mosley.

Mosley Defeats Mayorga In Last Second TKO

mosley65845.jpgBy Aaron Klein: Looking like only a shell of his former self, Shane Mosley (45-5, 38 KOs) stopped Ricardo Mayorga (28-7-1, 22 KOs) in the final second of the 12th round to win the WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title on Saturday night at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. At the time of the fight, Mosley, 37, was ahead on the two of the three judges’ scorecards. However, don’t be fooled by that, because Mosley appeared to be well behind in the fight, perhaps as much as eight by my scorecard.

Mayorga was by far the better fighter and was roughing an old-looking Mosley up, outworking him in virtually every round of the fight, and land the much harder shots. However, in the 12th round, Mayorga got sloppy and was dropped by a right hand with 15 seconds to go in the round. Mayorga got up, took a standing eight count and then was hit by several more big shots, and was sent down for the final time with a nice left hand from Mosley. The referee David Mendoza then stopped the bout at 2:59 of the 12th round.

Mayorga-Mosley: “Thirty Is The New Twenty” – Shane

mosley454.jpgBy Jason Kim: I don’t know whether or not he’s deceiving himself or if he knows something that we don’t know, but the 37 year-old Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) believes that he’s going to be back among the top fighters in boxing if he defeats former welterweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-6-1, 23 KOs) tonight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. This bout has war written all over, with neither fighter a guarantee lock to come out the victor at this point. It’ll be a case of whether Mosley’s speed and brilliance will match up well with Mayorga’s power and size, and youth.

Coming off a nearly a year away from boxing, Mosley will be a year older, and it’s a big question mark how much he’ll have left tonight. He had a hard fight in his last bout, a 12-round decision loss to Miguel Cotto, and he may have been used up somewhat from that fight. Although the year off may help him somewhat because he hasn’t been forced to take hard punches, but he’s beginning to show his age despite what he says about “thirty is the new twenty.”

Berto-Forbes Tonight: Could a Bout Against Mosley Be In The Future For Andre?

berto455756.jpgBy Chris Williams: WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (22-0, 19 KOs) could have a big chance in the future for a potential but against Shane Mosley if Berto defeats challenger Steve Forbes (33-6, 9 KOs) tonight in a 12-round WBC title bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. However, Berto, 25, thought to be the weakest of the four welterweight champions by many boxing fans, may have his problems with the crafty, counter-punching Forbes, who looks like a weaker version of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Indeed, Forbes, 31, may have had his share of problems against the much bigger Oscar De La Hoya in his last fight in May, but against the short 5’8″ Berto, Forbes, a former IBF super featherweight champion, won’t have to worry about a reach disadvantage like he suffered in his last fight. Berto is easily one of the most entertaining of the welterweight’s in the division, with blazing fast hands, a tendency to slug it out with his opponents and a wide open defense which leaves him open constantly for shots from his opponents. For that reason, Berto is so exciting, because even against merely moderately good welterweights, Berto sometimes has to struggle to win, taking a tremendous amount of punishment along the way. Forbes, however, isn’t easy to hit, ducking shots, using a shoulder roll and upper body movement to get out of the way of punches. Berto will have to have a plan B to use just in case he’s not able to overwhelm him with punches like he often does to his other opponents.

Mosley-Mayorga: Both Looking Past Each Other

mosley2354657.jpgBy Manuel Perez: Four-time champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) tries to kick start his lagging career against former three-time champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-6-1, 23 KOs) who also hopes to reignite a failing career on Saturday night in a non-title bout at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Mosley who’s been out of action licking his wounds since last being defeated by welterweight Miguel Cotto in November 2007, is counting on a victory over Mayorga so that Mosley can keep alive his goal of facing WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito at some point in the future.

As for Mayorga, he’s hoping that Oscar De La Hoya will give him a rematch someday so that Mayorga can try to avenge his 6th round TKO loss to him from May 2006. However, the chances of facing De La Hoya again are about zero. Mayorga has trained hard for this fight, and in recent photos he looks lean and in the best shape he’s been in years. That doesn’t mean that he’ll necessarily fight well against Mosley because Mayorga, 34, has a lot of miles on him, and has twice been stopped in the past two years, once by De La Hoya and another time by Felix Trinidad.

Mosley-Mayorga on Saturday: Shane Wants Margarito Next – Latest Boxing News

mosley64567.jpgBy Eric Thomas: it pays off sometimes to be ambitious, but in Mosley’s case it may turn out to hurt him. He wants a fight with World Boxing Association welterweight champion Antonio Margarito next, that is, if Mosley is successful in defeating former two-time champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-6-1, 23 KOs) this Saturday at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. A fight with the bigger, taller Margarito would almost be suicidal for the smaller Mosley no matter what at what point of his career, but now that he’s 37 and not as active in the ring that he used to be, it’s a move doomed for failure.

However, first things first, he’s got Mayorga, 34, to worry about this Saturday night. At one time in his career, in 2003, the offensively unorthodox Mayorga was arguably the best welterweight on the planet bar none. Although some might argue that Mosley or Oscar De La Hoya would have perhaps been able to beat him during this time, I tend to doubt it seriously, and think they would have been beaten soundly by him at this stage in his career.

De La Hoya Now Looking At Possible Opponents Mosley, Hatton, Williams, Mora, and Jones

delahoya4456875.jpgBy Jason Kim: The Oscar De La Hoya sweepstakes continue as the CEO of Golden Boy, Richard Schaefer, said yesterday that De La Hoya is now considering a fight with the following opponents, Ricky Hatton, Sergio Mora, Paul Williams, Roy Jones Jr. and Shane Mosley. De La Hoya, 35, was previously working on a fight with Manny Pacquiao, but that fight fell through when Pacquiao failed to accept Golden Boy’s offer of a 30% share of the PPV revenues for the fight. Pacquiao, however, was looking at getting at least 40%.

Rather than give in to Oscar’s wishes and accepting an offer that he felt was unfair, Pacquiao walked away, leaving Oscar without an opponent once again. Not to be one to just sit and mope about the turn of events, De La Hoya has immediately started looking at other options. A name conspicuously missing from the list of fighters named was Antonio Margarito, a tough all offense fighter who recently dethroned Miguel Cotto last month.

De La Hoya, however, doesn’t want to fight him because, A. He’s a Mexican and Oscar doesn’t want to fight a Mexican fighter in his final fight of his career, although Mora is Mexican. B. Margarito has unfinished business with Paul Williams, who previously defeated him by a close 12-round decision in 2007.

Mosley vs. Mayorga: If Successful, Shane Wants Margarito

mosley12345.jpgBy Tim Neilson: In a stay busy fight, former lightweight, welterweight and light middleweight champion Shane Mosley (44-5, 37 KOs) will be taking on former welterweight and light middleweight champion Ricardo Mayorga (29-6, 23 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round bout on September 27th, at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Mosley, 36, is hoping to use a victory over the 34 year-old Mayorga as ammunition to get a fight with WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito after that. That seems more wishful thinking at this point for Mosley, who has done little is the past six years, losing six out of his last twelve fights during this stretch of time.

Margarito, if truly desperate, might take on a fighter like Mosley given his still popular name among boxing fans, but he’s clearly not the most marketable fighter out there for Margarito at this time. If Margarito does end up facing Mosley, one would believe it would only come after exhausting all other potential opponents in the welterweight or junior middleweight divisions in which to face. Mosley, at one time – in between 2000 to 2001- was arguably the top fighter in the welterweight division and pound-for-pound the top fighter in boxing.

Sam-Skelton Off, Judah-Mosley Off, Castillo Retires

Sinan Samil Sam has to take a break in preparing for his European heavyweight championship bout against Matt Skelton due to a hand injury. The title fight that was originally scheduled for May 30th in Istanbul will be postponed for about for weeks.

“It’s a pity”, states Sam. “I’m fired up to fight Skelton and I know that all of Turkey wants to see this fight. But at the moment I can’t use my left hand and I cannot take any risk before this fight. I know that this is my last chance to make it to the top. And I definitely don’t want to blow it.”
