Pavlik vs. Martinez: Why Not For Everyone?

Image: Pavlik vs. Martinez: Why Not For Everyone?by Niko Tricarico: In 2007, the world witnessed the highest grossing fight in the history of Pay Per View boxing when Oscar De La Hoya faced off against Floyd Mayweather Jr., though even with that type of sporadic popularity you’d be hard pressed to find a group of people who actively follow the sport with the same ease you’d be able to find someone who could list the starting roster of the 2007 New York Giants. I am consistently dumbfounded as to why boxing is not more popular. I am blown away by how there was more buzz and excitement about the Masters tournament on the radio than there is about the upcoming fight between Kelly Pavlik and Sergio Martinez.

Paul Williams to be at ringside for Pavlik-Martinez – News

Image: Paul Williams to be at ringside for Pavlik-Martinez – NewsBy Jim Dower: Former WBO welterweight champion Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KO’s) will be at ringside this Saturday night for the Kelly Pavlik vs. Sergio Martinez middleweight title fight at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Williams, who will be facing Kermit Cintron on May 8th, wants to fight the winner of Pavlik-Martinez. Williams already beat Martinez by a close 12 round majority decision last December in 2009, but Williams wouldn’t mind getting another crack at Martinez to show that the win wasn’t a fluke.

Pavlik-Martinez: Will Kelly win back respect with a win over Sergio?

Image: Pavlik-Martinez: Will Kelly win back respect with a win over Sergio?By Jim Dower: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is hoping to get his reputation back with boxing fans by beating light middleweight Sergio Martinez on Saturday night at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Pavlik holds down two of the four belts, and is considered by some boxing experts to be the best fighter in the weak middleweight division. However, there’s more than a few people who no longer see the 28-year-old Pavlik as being the best fighter in the division and feel that he’s been steered around more dangerous opponents like Paul Williams to keep Pavlik a champion for as long as possible before gets beaten once again.

Pavlik: “That wasn’t me in there [in loss to Hopkins] that night”

Image: Pavlik: “That wasn’t me in there [in loss to Hopkins] that night"By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik seems to still be unable to come to terms with his lopsided 12 round unanimous decision against 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins in October 2008. In an interview with Greg Leon of Boxing Talk, Pavlik, 28, says “That wasn’t me in there that night. I think people know me well enough to know that I wasn’t myself that fight. I hope that’s the main film [Sergio] Martinez has been studying.” I hate to be the one to break this to Pavlik, but that was him in there that night with Hopkins.

Martinez could surprise Pavlik with his power

Image: Martinez could surprise Pavlik with his powerBy Jim Dower: Going into this Saturday’s fight between WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) and Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, a lot of people are seeing Pavlik’s superior power as being the telling factor in this fight. Indeed, many of the boxing experts think that Pavlik’s huge power and size will be too much for the smaller, weaker 5’11” Martinez. I don’t know that I necessarily agree with them. Martinez showed in his last two fights against Kermit Cintron and Paul Williams that his power seems to be getting better with age, as he’s started to load up on his shots more.

Will Pavlik get schooled again?

Image: Will Pavlik get schooled again?By Dave Lahr: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 21 KO’s) faces Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KO’s) next Saturday night in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Sadly, this will be Pavlik’s toughest fight since he captured the middleweight titles three long years ago. Some people have their doubts about Pavlik having the needed boxing skills to win this fight, and I’m one of them. Pavlik is one of the slower fighters in the top 10, and although he is a champion, he’s got zero hand speed, a very basic offense and rather poor defensive skills.

Arum thinks a Pavlik win over Martinez will restore Kelly’s luster in the middleweight division

Image: Arum thinks a Pavlik win over Martinez will restore Kelly’s luster in the middleweight divisionBy Chris Williams: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) lost a lot of his stature in the middleweight division after being badly beaten by then 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins in 2008. Pavlik has since been trying to win back fans with fights against Marco Antonio Rubio and Miguel Espino. However, those opponents didn’t have the name value to erase the image of Pavlik getting schooled by Hopkins. On April 17th, Pavlik will be facing one of the best opponents of his 10-year pro career when he faces Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KO’s) at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Pavlik-Martinez: Is it time for a new middleweight champion?

By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) has had three years to show his stuff as a champion and he’s been a major disappointment to many boxing fans, and not just because of all the missed fight due to his hand infection. Pavlik’s opposition has been mediocre at best. Pavlik has made the most of the situation beating what’s been fed to him, but I have seen Pavlik matched against any one interesting when he didn’t have a mandatory defense.

By Sean McDaniel: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) will be dealing with an altogether completely different fighter from what he’s grown accustomed to in the form of Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KO’s), who the 28-year-old Pavlik will be fighting on April 17th at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
