Pavlik hasn’t fought anyone close to as being as elusive and versatile as Martinez will likely be. In a match up skills vs. skills, Martinez wins this fight hands down. He’s a much better overall fighter compared to the somewhat one-dimensional Pavlik.

By Chris Williams: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) has not been what many American boxing fans had been hoping for after winning the WBC/WBO middleweight titles three years ago over Jermain Taylor in 2007. Instead of taking on one tough opponent after another in exciting fights, Pavlik has opted for what appears to be easy money fights against the likes of Gary Lockett, Miguel Espino and Marco Antonio Rubio.

By Chris Williams: If Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has his way, WBC/World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik’s next fight will be at the Cowboys Stadium, in Arlington, Texas. Arum thinks that he can get at 40,000 fans that will want to come see Pavlik fight. According to Joe Scalzo of Vindy.com, Arum wants to package Pavlik with a major Hispanic fighter like Julio Chavez Jr. or Antonio Margarito, and then with that star on the undercard, a Pavlik fight could bring in the numbers that Arum is hoping for.

There’s probably a ton of faster and better skilled fighters in the top 10 compared to Pavlik, but none of them have his power. It’s Pavlik’s power which enables him to beat guys that have been overall tools than him and have kept him as the WBC/WBO middleweight champion for the past three years since Pavlik defeated Jermain Taylor in 2007 to win the titles.

By Jim Dower: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) says he will be fighting two to three more times at middleweight and then moving up to the super middleweight division to compete at that weight class, according to Vindy.com. Pavlik points out that it’s harder and harder for him to make the middleweight limit and he says that many of the fighters like Jermain Taylor, Arthur Abraham and Edison Miranda have moved out of the division into the super middleweight division.

Pavlik, who has been a disappointment as a middleweight champion, will be facing a crafty fighter in the same mold as Hopkins, only smaller. At 5’11”, Martinez will be giving up three inches in height to Pavlik and a lot more than that in power.

This fight has a lot riding on for the 27-year-old Pavlik, because if he wins, he could find himself in bouts against WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm later on in 2010, a possible fight against old war horse Winky Wright or fight against International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Lucian Bute.

However, the contracts still have yet to be signed, but there isn’t anything expected to hold up this fight. For boxing fans frustrated with the lack of interesting fights for Pavlik since he won the WBC/WBO middleweight titles in 2007, they can feel happy about this fight.

By William Mackay: Dan Rafael is reporting that WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) could be facing light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KO’s) on April 17th. If this fight happens, it would easily be the best opponent that Pavlik has faced since he was schooled by 44-year-old Bernard Hopkins in a one-sided 12 round decision loss in October 2008. Nothing has yet been confirmed about this fight, but it would be great news if Pavlik does finally step it up again and fight someone really talented and exciting like Martinez.
