Mayweather-Canelo & Matthysse-Garcia analysis for tonight’s PPV card

may8388383By M. Khan: Tonight’s match-ups between Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo: Alvarez and Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse in Las Vegas, Nevada are an example of old school promoting. Its almost reminds us that boxing was a sport of pride and a way out of the gutters for most fighters.

In the old days we would never had a discussion on what grounds and satisfaction would the fighters be fighting. I accept that we should never over look the fact that boxing is a business but it must not take front seat over the pride of fighting.

Schaefer compliments Canelo for being so calm at weigh-in

canelo559By Dan Ambrose: If you saw Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer at yesterday’s weigh-in with WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather Jr., you’d think that Schaefer was ready to break out the pom poms and start cheerleading after Canelo made the 152 lb. catch-weight. Schaefer was all over Canelo, praising him for simply doing his job by coming in at the agreed upon weight.

Schaefer says likes how calm Canelo was at the weigh-in where he showed little emotion during the whole event other than smiling once at Mayweather during the stare down, and getting upset when Mayweather suggested that he hold one side of the WBC’s newly created solid gold junior middleweight belt while Mayweather held the other side.

Rafael picks Mayweather over Canelo, Matthysse to KO Garcia

may615By Allan Fox: ESPN’s Dan Rafael is going with the smart picks for tonight’s mega fight card on Showtime pay-per-view by selecting Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) to top Mexico’s No.1 boxing star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), and Argentinian Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) over WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) by knockout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rafael summed up his thoughts on the Mayweather-Canelo fight by saying this to ESPN “He’s [Mayweather] facing a slower, less experienced, somewhat one-dimensional opponent. Alvarez is bigger and stronger, but made to order for Mayweather.”

Canelo plays tough guy with Mayweather at weigh-in

canelo901By Dan Ambrose: The 23-year-old inexperienced WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) decided to play a bit of psychological gamesmanship with the kind of boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) during Thursday weigh-in by refusing Mayweather’s request for him to hold one side of the newly created supposedly pure gold WBC 154 lb. title strap so that the 12,200 fans that attended the weigh-in could snap pictures.

Mayweather politely offered Canelo to hold up one side of the belt and instead of doing so, the red-haired fighter stubbornly refused his request. It was pretty sad that Canelo would use this as the time where he would play tough guy, because it was the fans that lost out and of course the WBC. They didn’t get both guys holding up their new gold strap. It made Canelo look more than a little childish.

Alvarez’s and Garcia’s body language tells us what’s to come for tommorow night

canelo55434By Chester Rivers: They say a picture is worth a thousand words but at first glance at Danny Garcia and Saul Alvarez body language at the live weigh-in I could only say two words, “Oh No”! Both fighters barely made weight and it showed. Both fighters also looked very nervous and dehydrated.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez seemed to be dehydrated the most. One sign of dehydration is discoloration of the skin. Looking at Saul’s face I noticed the circles around his eyes were pale while his cheeks were flush. After Saul made his ring walk he took the stage and immediately sat down. Was he sitting because of weakness from taking off the extra weight or was he harnessing some nervous energy?

Canelo Fans Overwhelm Mayweather Jr. Fans During Weigh In

canelo88By Vitali Shaposhnikov: While I am used to seeing a lot of support from the Mexican boxing fans when it comes to their fighter facing anyone, especially Mayweather Jr., this time the entire scene was alien to me.

Usually the Mayweather Jr. fans do a great job showing their support of their favorite American boxing superstar, their unparalleled champion, and their undoubted victor, but this time, at the Canelo vs. Mayweather Jr. weigh in, things were different.

The crowd in the arena as well as outside by the big screens in the main lobby of MGM Grand, was overwhelmingly in support of Saul rather than Floyd. As Alvarez stepped on the scale, the thundering cheers exploded and lasted for as long as people were able to make noise without taking breaths.

Weights: Mayweather 150.5, Canelo 152

canelo323By Dan Ambrose: A painfully thin WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) unbelievably made weight today in weighing in at 152 pounds on the button to make the 152 lb. catch-weight for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather looked a lot healthier in coming in at 150.5 lb.s for the fight, and looking like he’s ready to start fighting right now. Canelo looked like he needs to have fluids immediately pumped into his emaciated body because he was scary thin. I can only imagine how much water weight he’s going to pump into his body now that the weigh-in is over. My guess is at least 25 pounds of water weight to put Canelo at 177 for the fight.

No issues with Canelo’s weight for the Mayweather fight

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Michael Turturice: On every blog, sport writers website and talk show the only topic this week is WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s (42-0-1 with 30 KO’s) weight for Saturday’s fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Hell it was even streamed on an electronic billboard in Times Square. Hear me folks this is just a distraction! Floyd Mayweather Sr. has come out and said this morning that he “knows” Alvarez is still trying to make weight to today’s weight-in at the MGM Grand.

This doesn’t pass the smell test and it is my opinion that “The Money Team” is just stirring the pot. Might even be a sign of concern…

Mayweather Sr: Canelo’s still trying to lose weight, and he’s down to just muscle

canelo5645By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. says that WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is still battling hard just to try and get down to the 152 lb. catch-weight for today’s weigh-in at 2:30 p.m. for his fight on Saturday night against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0. 26 KO’s).

The way Floyd Sr. sees it, Canelo will have taken off too much weight for him to have any power to win against Mayweather Jr. It’s never good when you’re still trying to make weight the day of the fight, especially when you’ve had to lose massive amounts of weight just to get to this point.

Mayweather-Canelo catch-weight controversy

canelo55by James Le Blanc: Who saw Dan Rafael set the record straight on ESPN First Take about the recent ‘boxing is dead’ assessment. I was also particularly happy to see him call out Skip Bayless for not knowing what a catch-weight was and starting a controversy over it. The catch-weight agreement between Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has had particular attention because Mayweather criticized his rival Manny Pacquiao for forcing his fighters to fight at catch weights.

Just recently Canelo Alvarez has come out and said not only did Mayweather demand the catch weight, he tried to have him fight as low as 150 when fighting at the welterweight limit was out of the question for Canelo. Canelo then went on to say Floyd wanted a rehydration clause in which Canelo would have a limit to what he weighed the actual day of the fight.
