canelo323By Dan Ambrose: A painfully thin WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) unbelievably made weight today in weighing in at 152 pounds on the button to make the 152 lb. catch-weight for his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather looked a lot healthier in coming in at 150.5 lb.s for the fight, and looking like he’s ready to start fighting right now. Canelo looked like he needs to have fluids immediately pumped into his emaciated body because he was scary thin. I can only imagine how much water weight he’s going to pump into his body now that the weigh-in is over. My guess is at least 25 pounds of water weight to put Canelo at 177 for the fight.

After the weigh-in, Canelo showed a little bit of what appeared to be poor sportsmanship by refusing to hold part of the pure gold WBC 154 lb. belt that Mayweather was holding up. Mayweather asked Canelo twice to hold the other side of the belt, but Canelo merely scrunched up his eyebrows, shook his head and seemed to get upset about Mayweather’s cordial offer. It was just for the sake of posing for photos for the fans, but Canelo was having none of it. He didn’t want to make nice with Mayweather.

I hope this isn’t going to lead to Canelo choosing to get rough when it comes to the fight, because it would be a pity to see another one of Mayweather’s opponents to start fouling and end up getting docked points the way that Victor Ortiz did when he got angry with Mayweather. This is athletic event, and if Canelo is going to fight with anger in stead of his brain, Mayweather is going to school him worse than he did Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero. In fact, that’s what I see happening. Canelo fights with anger when things aren’t going his way, and on Saturday night things aren’t going to go his way. Like I said, I hope Canelo doesn’t start fouling if he gets too angry at being dominated.

Canelo appeared to be too weak to stand before the weigh-in, as he had to sit down for some reason. It looked the loss of fluids had gotten to him. I hope they don’t have to hook Canelo up to an IV line to get fluids into him quickly because it’s dangerous when you dehydrate.
