Schaefer: The WBC has produced a pure Gold belt for Mayweather-Canelo fight

23(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says that the World Boxing Council has had a special pure gold WBC belt created for this Saturday’s fight between WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I’m assuming when Schaefer says it’s “pure gold,” he’s talking about it being 24 K gold and not 14 K. A pure 24 karat belt would be useless to be worn as a belt even for adornment.

Schaefer said “The WBC has produced a very special belt for this occasion. It’s a first time that they have melted a big gold bar into the belt. This is a belt made of pure gold.”

Mayweather: Canelo still has a lot of weight to lose

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) is happy to see that his opponent WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) still needs to lose weight in order to get down to the 152 lb. catch-weight by Friday. Canelo told ESPN that he was already at 153 lbs. 2 days ago, but he looked close to 163 than 153, and it was impossible to take that seriously given how bad Canelo still was at the time.

Mayweather Jr. is very aware of Canelo’s weight from his inside sources, and he said this about his red-haired opponents struggles to make weight “He’s still got a lot of weight to get off. My weight is made. I woke up this morning 150. I know it [about Canelo still needing to drop a ton of weight]. My job as a fighter is to know everything about my opponent I’m facing.”

Mayweather: Canelo fight is just a stepping stone

Mayweather and Canelo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) doesn’t acknowledge WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) as being a real threat to him this Saturday night. To Mayweather, Canelo is just another victim for Mayweather to add to his long list heavily hyped opponents that turned out to be little more than just a mirage.

Mayweather Jr. said at the final pressure conference today “September 14th is just another stepping stone, just another opponent for me. But he [Canelo] knows he’s facing Floyd Mayweather. I’m just facing another opponent. It doesn’t matter what’s the game plan. If the game plan is to keep pressuring, I know how to handle that. If the game plan is to box, can’t no body outbox me.”

It’s debatable what Canelo will try and do. In his win over Trout, Canelo got tired and chose to out-box Trout. 5 of the last 6 rounds could have gone either way due to Trout out-working Canelo.

Canelo will be “The One”

Canelo Alvarez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By John Florence: Their has been alot of speculation over the past few months on who will be the one come September 14. Will it be the red haired Saul” “Canelo” Alvarez(42-0-1) or will it be the pound for pound king of boxing Floyd “Money” Mayweather(44-0). I will tell you why I believe Canelo will be “The One.” My view on it is that every dog has its day.

All the great fighters in history never get to retire undefeated at some point or another they face someone who on fight night is better than them. Why are we to believe that Floyd is invincible father time waits for no man, and Floyd is reaching his time at almost 40 years of age.

Canelo a HUGE underdog for Mayweather Jr. fight

Mayweather and Canelo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: Members of the media and fighters were each asked by Golden Boy Promotions who will be “The One” in Saturday’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s) and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s), and Mayweather overwhelmingly was picked as the fighter that would come out on top in this fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Here is a short list of some of the fighters that are picking Mayweather Jr. to beat Canelo:

Top fighters picking Mayweather to beat Canelo

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 11, 2013) – Former world champions, current fighters and members of the boxing press have weighed in on who they believe will win “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” this Saturday, Sept. 14 live on SHOWTIME PPV® from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

So who is going to triumph? Most experts expect a tough, close fight while giving Mayweather the edge, but it is safe to say that when it comes to these two boxing superstars, anything can happen in that ring on Saturday night.

Here’s how the media and boxers, past and current see “The ONE”:

FIGHTERS

Mike Tyson, Former World Heavyweight Champion (Mayweather): “I’ve only seen Canelo fight twice — against [Josesito] Lopez and [Austin] Trout. Trout gave him some trouble and he isn’t as experienced and as technically skilled as Floyd is. Floyd stays in tip-top shape and is a very relaxed fighter. He is at his peak. It’s going to be hard for anybody to beat Floyd now unless he doesn’t train. Floyd has transcended the game so much that the best fighters out there now try to emulate his style. Floyd wins by a decision.”

Is De La Hoya letting Alvarez down?

DSC_5213(Photo credit: Steve Lopez) By Nick Hagen: It’s unbelievable timing for Oscar De La Hoya to book himself into rehab only five days before the mega fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. 44-0 and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez 42-0-1

De La Hoya has voluntarily booked himself into a clinic, for yet undisclosed reasons. (However he has a well documented history of alcoholic and substance abuse).

Many boxing fans, me included, are asking the question; why De La Hoya couldn’t of waited until next week, to make such a decision.

Alvarez already has a mountain to climb this coming weekend, if he is going to dethrone the P4P number 1 star. Alvarez especially needs the backing and support, from his family, close friends, trainers and in so many ways De La Hoya his own Promoter.

Canelo could make $12 million for Mayweather fight

Canelo(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) is set to make $5 million for his fight this Saturday night against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s), but he could make as much as $12 million for the fight, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

This $12 million is quite a bit of money for a fighter only 23-years-old having fought only 1 good opponent during his career in Austin Trout. In contrast, Mayweather Jr. is making $41.5 million for the fight, but the difference in experience between them is huge.

Can Mayweather vs. Alvarez beat the record 2.4 millions PPV’s?

23(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Michael Turturice: In May of 2007, the pay per view record was set at 2.4 million Buys for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Oscar Del La Hoya fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Now the question is can this Saturday’s card between Mayweather Jr. and WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada overtake that lofty number?

I watched the 2007 Mayweather-De La Hoya fight and really enjoyed every round. Yes, Mayweather won that fight by a 12 round split decision with his mid-fight adjustments surpassing the solid effect by the Golden Boy De La Hoya. Thinking back on that fight, I can’t remember who else stepped in the ring that night; and this is where I think this upcoming card has a chance.

Canelo still looking heavy; will he miss the 152 lb. catch-weight?

12(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: In photos taken of WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) from yesterday, it looks as if Canelo is still in the 160 lbs. region, and it’s unclear right now from lacking at his photos if he’s going to be able to take off the remaining weight to get down to the 152 pound catch-weight, if he does plan on making that weight.

You can see his mouth is totally dehydrated, and he looks like he’s not drinking water. You have to wonder how many days Canelo has had to limit his liquids to drop weight to where he is now. Canelo should be a lot thinner than he is if he were close to the 152 lb. weight, but he’s not looking skeletal yet like we frequently see Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. when he dehydrates to make weight.
