Reynoso: Canelo-Cotto rematch will be on Canelo’s terms

canelo5666By Dan Ambrose: Eddy Reynoso, the manager for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), says that if Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is going to be getting a rematch, then it’s going to be on Canelo’s terms this time around. Canelo needs an opponent for his May 7th fight on HBO pay-per-view, and he needs someone with a big enough name to attract fans into purchasing the card.

A rematch against Cotto would be ideal for that date. However, Cotto could fight on June 4th, and in order for him to get a rematch with Canelo, he would need to agree to fighting on May 7th. Canelo plans to fight in Las Vegas, Nevada at the new Arena.

Mayweather: If Canelo gets out of line, I’ll beat him again

canelo7657(Canelo Alvarez seen here at the post-fight press conference after being beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. Canelo doesn’t look like a happy camper, does he?) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. took some big shots at Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and his flagship fighter WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last Saturday night.

Mayweather says that De La Hoya is counting on Canelo on being his money fighter. However, if he gets too uppity, he’ll come back and beat him again like he did in their one-sided fight in 2013. Mayweather won that fight by an easy 12 round majority decision in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather says he prefers to work with guys that are drug free like Richard Schaefer and Al Haymon. He likes them because they dress like men. Mayweather is obviously taking a shot at De La Hoya over the photos that leaked out years ago showing him wearing fishnet pantyhose.

Lucas Matthysse wants to train with Canelo Alvarez

matthysse567676By Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Lucas Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) reportedly is interested in training with WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to get help for his next fight.

Matthysse, 33, was stopped in the 10th round in his last fight against Viktor Postol in a failed attempt to win the vacant WBC light welterweight title. Matthysse suffered an eye injury in the 10th, which caused him to hit the deck and stay there as the referee counted him out.

The Argentinian Matthysse would need to transfer his place of training to relocate to Mexico if he wants to train with the 25-year-old Canelo.

Golovkin’s promoter wants Canelo fight for May

Boxing: Golovkin vs LemieuxBy Dan Ambrose: IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) are both in a tough situation as far as their fights go.

Neither guy has an opponent for their next fights, and the landscape looks bleak for both in terms of finding quality opponents that the boxing public cares about. Canelo needs a fairly big name for his May 7 fight on HBO pay-per-view, because he can’t choose just anyone if he’s going to be asking the boxing public to pay big money to see him fight.

Arum: Gilberto Ramirez beats Golovkin; he won’t get Canelo

ramirez78By Dan Ambrose: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says he wants to match his unbeaten 24-year-old fighter Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (33-0, 24 KOs) against Gennady Golovkin in Ramirez’s first defense if he beats WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (44-4, 29 KOs) in their fight on April 9th on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Tim Bradley.

Arum expects the 6’2” Ramirez to defeat Abraham to win his WBO 168lb title, and then he’d like for Ramirez to defend against Golovkin after that. Arum also sees Ramirez beating Golovkin.

“I think Golovkin and Tom Loeffler would rather fight Canelo,” Arum said to Fighthype. “I don’t think that fights going to happen. He [Golovkin] might even want to fight the English guy Saunders.

Atlas: Canelo vs. Golovkin is not going to happen

atlasBy Dan Ambrose: In the view of trainer Teddy Atlas, we won’t be seeing the fight between WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin this year. Atlas feels that Canelo has too many other options to make good money, and he doesn’t need to take a dangerous opponent like Golovkin.

Atlas feels that Golovkin is too big and too strong for Canelo. Atlas sees Canelo’s huge Latino fan base as making it possible for him to do well financially fighting anyone in the sport. Canelo doesn’t have to fight good opponents for him to make money. We’ve seen that recently with Canelo making good money fighting the likes of James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo.

Neither of those fighters are factors in the 154lb division. They’re just a couple of names from the past that are no longer relevant at this point in the sport. Canelo still fought them and made good money.

golovkinBy Dan Ambrose: Former world title challenger Willie Monroe Jr. (19-2, 6 KOs) says he’s still in the running for a big fight against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) for May 7 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions apparently haven’t yet decided on an opponent. Monroe Jr., 29, is one of several names that is being considered for Canelo’s next fight. The other names are Gabriel Rosado, Liam Smith and Miguel Cotto.

Roach: Canelo will be bigger and stronger than Golovkin in the ring

1-Alvarez-Cotto (2)By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Freddie Roach suspects that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will be bigger and stronger than IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs) when/if the two fighters face each other in 2016.

Roach doesn’t think that Canelo will be necessarily the bigger puncher than Golovkin, but he does think he’ll be stronger than him and heavier as well. Roach doesn’t know how Golovkin will respond with being in the ring with a fighter heavier than him in Canelo, because it’s potentially going to be a different sitiation than he’s become accustomed to.

De La Hoya: Canelo would KO Cotto in rematch

canelo100By Dan Ambrose: Miguel Cotto is one of the potential opponents Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is thinking of matching up with WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) for his next fight on May 7th. A rematch with Cotto is a sure thing money maker for Canelo and Golden Boy. De La Hoya believes Canelo would knockout Cotto in a rematch.

It’s unclear why De La Hoya believes that Canelo would be able to stop Cotto in a second fight when he never came close to scoring a knockout in their fight last November.
Currently, the names that are being considered for Canelo’s next fight on 5/7 are Willie Monroe Jr., Vanes Martirosyan, Gabriel Rosado and Cotto.

De La Hoya wants 90/10 split for Canelo-Golovkin fight

delahoya1By Dan Ambrose: In a huge sign that we might not be seeing a unification fight this year in between IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and WBC belt holder Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who promotes Canelo, says that negotiations would start with Canelo getting a 90-10 money split for a fight against Golovkin if he gets his way.

De La Hoya sees the 25-year-old Canelo as the bigger name than Golovkin and the main draw for a pay-per-view fight on HBO. Because of that, De La Hoya justifies the 90-10 money split, which would be hugely tilted in Canelo’s favor.
