Fury: Khan has the speed to beat Canelo

fury11111By Scott Gilfoid: IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Tyson Fury is siding with underdog Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) in his important clash with WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7. Fury believes that Khan has the hand and foot speed to do the job on the slower, but much bigger, younger and stronger Canelo.

Fury notes that the 25-year-old Canelo hasn’t knocked many people out in his last five fights despite possessing a lot of punching power, and he says he’s not been a world champion for too long. Fury sees Canelo as a pumped up welterweight, who has moved up in weight over the last five years.

I fear for Amir Khan

khan56By Bashar Khaddage: With the recent announcement of WBC Middleweight Champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fighting the welterweight Amir Khan, I must say I’m not too sure how I feel about this. It sure as heck will sell and we can expect the PPV numbers to be impressive as the casual boxing fan will probably purchase this fight. However, this fight has mismatch written all over it.

First and foremost, lets quickly analyze Khans profile: Here’s a decorated Olympian that started of his pro career fighting in the lightweight division of 135 lbs and only till very recently has fought at the welterweight limit of 147 lbs. He’s beaten 3 fighters at welterweight, but did not look too impressive, especially with Chris Algeiri – A feather fisted fighter. Khan still possessed that blinding hand speed, but none of Khans wins came by way of KO / TKO, suggesting that his KO power, which was never too much to begin with, did not carry through with him into the welterweight division.

Now looking briefly at the catch-weight king, Canelo Alvarez: The so-called WBC ‘Middleweight’ champion forces all his challengers to drain down to 155 lbs (when in reality the Middleweight title can be fought at up to 160 lbs) or he picks on someone from the welterweight / junior middleweight division and forces them to move up in weight at 155 lbs.

Beristain: Canelo is fortunate Khan doesn’t have Mayweather’s defensive skills

Image: Beristain: Canelo is fortunate Khan doesn't have Mayweather's defensive skillsBy Dan Ambrose: Legendary trainer Nacho Beristain sees WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in a good position to impress the fans and prove to them how good he is after the way he let them down recently in his questionable win over Miguel Cotto last November.

Beristain thinks that Canelo deserved to lose to Cotto in that fight, and he doesn’t understand what’s wrong with the young Mexican star. Beristain likes the way that Canelo fights, but he can’t figure why he keeps struggling when he faces guys like Cotto, Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Erislandy Lara.

Amir Khan could seal his legacy with the greats!

khan55By @C1TheGoodFella: The mega-fight between Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7th, in Las Vegas on Cinco De Mayo, could turn out to be a night sealed in the boxing archives with the greats.

The classics like Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar De La Hoya, Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Jake Lamotta and then we have Khan vs. Canelo. The names alone create a buzz about them. Some May suggest we are the ones bluffed to be brainwashed by the boxing politics of life and follow the ones fabricated to be the elite?

Either way, Canelo Alvarez at 25-years-old is a two-time world champion, and has accomplished what most boxers could only dream of. Khan 29, is reasonably young and yet a two-time world champion and an Olympic Silver medallist at just 17 years.

Canelo’s trainer concerned with Khan’s speed

khan111By Tim Fletcher: Chepo Reynoso, the trainer for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs), feels that Amir Khan’s hand speed is something that they need to be focused on nullifying on May 7, when the 25-year-old Canelo faces Khan in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reynoso notes that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao didn’t want to face Khan due to his difficult fighting style that could give anyone problems.

Reynoso doesn’t see the 29-year-old Khan as being at a great weight disadvantage in this contest against Canele, because he believes that Khan was on the verge of moving up to junior middleweight anyway due to his problems in making the 147lb weight limit in his last fight against Chris Algieri last year in May.

Khan walks around in the low 160s in between fights. He definitely has the size to compete with Canelo in this fight. This isn’t football or wrestling. It’s a fight, and Khan could very well pull off an upset if he can follow the blueprint that was created by Floyd Mayweather Jr. He showed that you don’t need to be as big or as powerful as Canelo in order to beat him, and make him look bad in the process. Canelo is a flawed fighter in many ways, as we’ve seen with his poor efforts against Mayweather, Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara.

Matthew Hatton: Canelo will be too big and too strong for Khan

canelo955By Dan Ambrose: The now retired Matthew Hatton, the brother of former two division world champion Ricky Hatton, thinks that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) will ultimately be too big for Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) to handle in their fight on May 7.

Hatton thinks the catch-weight of 155lbs won’t be of much help to the 29-year-old Khan because after Canelo rehydrates, he’ll have a big weight advantage over Khan and he’ll use the weight to batter him.

Groves: Khan could give Canelo problems

khan88By Dan Ambrose: Super middleweight George Groves was surprised like many people about the news of Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) getting a title shot against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7. It was such a surprise because Khan fights at welterweight, not middleweight, and he’s been rejected by the top fighters Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao for fights recently.

No one figured that a popular guy like Canelo would choose to fight Khan because it’s a move that would make Canelo look bad due to his huge size advantage over Khan.

“It’s shocking news. I think he [Khan] took everyone by surprise,” Groves said to skysports.com. “It’s fantastic for Khan. He’s taking on one of the best pound-for-pound fighters [Canelo] out there. It’s a brand new weight class for him. What Amir has is his hand speed. He’s going to give anyone problems because he’s so fast.”

Is Canelo Alvarez overrated?

canelo5666By AK: Ever since the Amir Khan and WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fight got announced this week for May 7 on HBO pay-per-view, the majority of boxing fans on this website have been calling this fight a mismatch. Canelo Alvarez is a really good fighter, has a good resume, solid chin, always going forward, and is willing to fight anyone, but the way people are taking about him is as though he is some kind of killer in the ring and cannot get beat.

Canelo is a good fighter but he is built up a lot by golden boy promotions due to him being the only fighter they have that is PPV worthy. Canelo has a record of 46-1-1-32 KO’s, which is really impressive especially for a 25 year old. But if you look at some of the fights you realize he has been gifted a few decisions. Canelo v Austin Trout was a really close fight and I had Trout winning by one point or a draw at best. But the judges that night had Canelo winning by a wide decision.

Khan: I’ll be at 165lbs for Canelo fight

khan56By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) isn’t too worried about WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s weight advantage for their fight on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view. Khan says he walks around in the 160s in between fights, and he’s just going to add a little weight and go into the fight with Canelo at 165lbs.

Khan expects Canelo to come into the fight at around 170lbs, so he doesn’t think that Canelo will have a huge weight advantage over him like many boxing fans think. Of course, if Canelo rehydrates to the 180s, then that would make it a different story.

Miguel Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach believes that Canelo rehydrated to 185lbs for the Canelo vs. Cotto fight last November. If that’s the case, then Khan could still find himself outweighed by 20 pounds when he gets inside the ring at 165lbs against an 185lb Canelo. That’s not good.
