Canelo says he has experience to handle Khan’s speed

1-CaneloKhanLAPC_Hoganphotos14By Dan Ambrose: One of the questions that fans have about WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) is how will he deal with the superior hand speed and foot speed of the smaller, quicker Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) in their fight on May 7 on HBO pay-per-view.

Canelo struggled badly against faster fighters in the past in fights against Erislandy Lara, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Austin Trout. Canelo appeared to lose all three of those fights. However, Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions have backed him off from facing fighters with fast hands in the past year, and he’s done well against slow fighters like Miguel Cotto and James Kirkland.

Khan: It will be a game of chess against Canelo

canelo9343(Photo Credit: Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Despite many boxing fans predicting that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will use his size advantage to try and flatten challenger Amir Khan on May 7, Khan said he sees the fight winding up as a chess match between him and the 25-year-old Canelo.

Khan says he wants to beat Canelo, prove everyone wrong, and then take his WBC title back home with him to the UK. Khan says his trainer Virgil Hunter will come up with the perfect game plan to defeat Canelo on HBO pay-per-view.

If Khan is able to turn the fight into chess match, it’s going to be awfully tough for Canelo to win, because he’s not as good of a boxer as Khan. Canelo can box, but he’s not at the same level as someone fleet of foot and fast of hand like Khan.

Canelo makes mistakes by trying to box against boxers, and that’s one of the reasons why he struggled in his fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Austin Trout. Canelo had the right idea of slugging in his fights against Miguel Cotto and Erislandy Lara. The problem was he was still so slow and flat-footed that they were able to outbox him over long stretches of those two fights.

Matthysse-Herrera being finalized for Canelo-Khan card

matthysse567676By Jim Dower: Golden Boy Promotions are working tirelessly to finalize the negotiations for the welterweight clash between Lucas Matthysse and Mauricio Herrera for the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Amir Khan card on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy expects the Matthysse-Herrera fight negotiations to be wrapped up by next week possibly. It’s a great fight matching two of the best fighters that recently moved up from the light welterweight division to take this fight.

Matthysse vs. Herrera will definitely help create some interest in the Canelo-Khan undercard, and it should be a great fight. Both guys have dealt with some disappointing defeats in recent years. Herrera was beaten by Danny Garcia and Jose Benavidez in fights that many fans felt he should have won. Matthysse has suffered recent losses to Danny Garcia and Viktor Postol, two of the better fighters in the sport.

“It’s still in the works,” Golden Boy Promotions vice president Eric Gomez said to ringtv.com. “It’s about a week away from getting done. There are still loose ends — details that are important that could break the fight. They’re both interested but once you go down and start talking about money and weight and this and that, you can lose the fight.”

Khan: Maybe I was meant to be a middleweight

Image: Khan: Maybe I was meant to be a middleweightBy Jeff Aranow: After training for a little less than two months, Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) believes that he was destined to fight at middleweight because of how hard he had been working at cutting weight in the past to get down to 147. Khan feels that it’s a good thing that he’s moving up in weight to middleweight to face WBA champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) on May 7 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

When Khan first signed for the Canelo fight, he had some misgivings initially about whether he was designed to be fighting in the middleweight division, but he’s now beginning to think that he should have made the move up to middleweight already.

De La Hoya: Khan was avoided by Mayweather and Pacquiao

de la hoya93By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, thinks Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao both avoided Amir Khan by not giving him a fight. As far as the big names go, it was only Canelo that chose to face Khan and not the other two stars. Canelo will be facing Khan on May 7 on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather and Pacquiao would probably disagree with De La Hoya about them having avoided Khan. They would probably say that a fight with Khan didn’t make sense in terms of dollars and sense because they had bigger names to fight. Mayweather used up his six-fight contract with Showtime/CBS fighting Robert Guerrero, Marcos Maidana, Canelo, Pacquiao and Andre Berto. Pacquiao’s last two fights of his career have been against Mayweather and he’ll be fighting next month against Tim Bradley.

De La Hoya believes that Khan will be entering the ring knowing that he’ll defeat Canelo. Khan does feel confident that he’ll beat Canelo after watching some of his recent fights and not being wowed by what he saw from Canelo.

De La Hoya thinks Khan can win if Canelo loses focus

1-CaneloKhanNYPC_Hoganphotos6By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya is talking up Amir Khan’s chances if his golden goose WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez fails to stay focused for 12 rounds.

De La Hoya believes that Khan could take control of the fight and win in the same way that Manny Pacquiao was able to beat him many years ago in 2008 in their PPV fight. De La Hoya came into the fight weight drained from having dropped to 147, and Pacquiao took advantage of the situation by giving him a battering until the fight was halted in the 8th.

Canelo: No concessions for GGG; I’m not a middleweight

Image: Canelo: No concessions for GGG; I'm not a middleweight(Photo Credit: Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Jeff Aranow: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez made it clear on Tuesday that if a fight between him and IBF/IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin is going to take place in the future, then it’s going to take place without him giving any concessions to him. Canelo says he himself is not a middleweight, and he doesn’t know when a fight between the two of them will take place.

Canelo does say the fight with Golovkin will happen, but it will be under his conditions. This suggests that if Golovkin wants the fight with Canelo, then he’s going to need to be prepared to boil down to 155lbs to make it happen.

Khan: I know I can take Canelo’s power

Image: Khan: I know I can take Canelo's power(Photo Credit: Martin McNeil – Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is not worried at all about the punching power of WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs). The entire question of whether Khan can beat Canelo surrounds whether he can handle the 25-year-old Canelo’s punching power.

If Khan can take Canelo’s best shots without getting knocked out in this fight, then it’s going to be awfully tough Khan to lose this fight. Other than Khan’s questionable decision loss to Lamont Peterson in 2011, he’s never been out-boxed by any of his opponents. Khan has always had the superior boxing skills that have enabled him to beat his opponents skillfully.

The fights where Khan has clearly lost where his knockout defeats to Danny Garcia and Breidis Prescott. This suggests that if Canelo cannot knock Khan out in their fight on May 7, then it’s going to be next to impossible for Canelo to win the fight unless he gets the victory by a questionable decision.

Canelo has a couple of those type of wins over Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara, so there’s a potential that we could see something like that happen. The judges give Canelo rounds even when he’s being out-punched. They likely focus on Canelo’s superior power when scoring the rounds. If that’s going to be the case for the Canelo-Khan fight, then Khan is going to need to throw a lot more punches so that he can make sure he gets the victory, because he’ll never be able to match the stronger and heavier Canelo’s punching power.

Khan still undecided if he’ll face Golovkin if he beats Canelo

Image: Khan still undecided if he’ll face Golovkin if he beats Canelo(Photo Credit: Martin McNeil – Hogan Photos/Golden Boy Promotions) By Dan Ambrose: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is still not sure whether he should defend the WBC middleweight title if he beats WBC champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in their catch-weight fight at 155lbs two months from now on May 7. Khan says he’s entirely focused on the Canelo fight right now, but he plans on meeting with his team to make a decision whether to face Golovkin if he beats Canelo.

That would be a very big step for Khan to take the fight against Golovkin. It would be a major victory for Khan to get past Canelo, but then to take an arguably bigger risk by facing Golovkin, it might be a little too much for Khan.

“I’m not looking past this fight to be honest with you,” Khan said to IFL TV. “I like Triple G. I think he’s a great fighter. If I win this fight and I get told to fight Triple G, I’ll have to sit down with my team and decide what happens. For the moment, we are not focusing on anything. We are not looking at that [Golovkin]. We are focusing on Alvarez. This is going to be a very, very hard fight. This is where I belong. It’s not going to be an easy night for me. I can’t lose focus for one second. If I lose focus for one second, I can get hurt badly,” Khan said.
