Khan looks to expose Canelo tonight

1-khan-alvarez (10)By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions believes he’s got boxing’s number one star in WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in his Golden Boy stable, and he’s already crowning the Mexican as the top fighter in the sport without even having bothered to match him against the best fighter at 160 in Gennady “GGG” Golovkin or the top fighter at 154 in IBF champion Jermall Charlo.

Canelo still needs to beat those guy, and he also must prove that he’s better than tonight’s bulked up opponent Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs), who Canelo will be facing on HBO pay-per-view from the 20,000 seat T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Rain Drops Can’t Stop the Canelo–Khan Weigh In

YouTube video

By Michael Montero: On an unseasonably chilly May afternoon in Las Vegas, hundreds of fans gathered outside the new T-Mobile Arena to catch the weigh-ins for tomorrow’s Canelo-Khan PPV card. A few rain drops fell onto the crowd but that didn’t scare folks away, as both a significant Mexican and British fan contingency made for a fun, rowdy atmosphere. All-time greats Roberto Duran, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis were among the boxing celebrities on stage.

Weights: Canelo 155, Khan 155

khan873By Jim Dower: WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) and Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) both made weight today at their weigh-in for Saturday’s fight on HBO PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A very drained looking Canelo weighed in at 155lbs, and looked like he had worked hard to take weight off for the 155lb catch-weight. For his part, Khan also came in at 155lbs. Khan looked like he was at his fighting weight already. Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter said he expects Khan to be at 160 or 161 tomorrow night, which means we’ll only see Khan rehydrate five to six pounds. Canelo is expected to rehydrate into the 170s, possibly 180.

Khan says Kell Brook must earn fight against him

1-khan-canelo (8)By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says he wants IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook to fight several bigger names before he’ll consider facing him in the future. Right now with the way that the 29-year-old Brook has been facing lesser fighters, Khan isn’t sure whether he’ll ever fight him.

Khan says Brook has only fought Shawn Porter in terms of notable fighters. He wants to see him fight three bigger names before he’ll agree to fight him. Unfortunately, Khan has been giving Brook these same instructions for the last two years now, and instead of Brook stepping it up to show that he’s trying to earn the fight against him, we’ve seen him fight Frankie Gavin, Jo Jo Dan and Kevin Bizier.

Can Canelo be Boxing’s #1 fighter without facing Golovkin?

1-khan-canelo (1)By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya has been saying for weeks that WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) is the face of boxing now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has retired from the sport. It’s interesting that De La Hoya is convinced that the 25-year-old Canelo is the new No.1 fighter in the sport with him perched between weight classes at his designed weight of 155lbs and not fighting Gennady Golovkin.

The question is can Canelo be the sport’s new face if he won’t even fight at the full weight for the middleweight division and won’t fight Golovkin? It looks bad from the outside at Canelo making excuses for not fighting Golovkin while at the same time fighting at 155 against a welterweight in Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) this Saturday night.

Amir Khan could win, but I would not bet against Canelo Álvarez

1-khan-canelo (2)

by: Shaun La – Tomorrow evening, in Las Vegas, at the T-Mobile Arena, Amir Khan (31-3 with 19 knockouts) will be entering into a boxing ring for a chance to earn the Ring Magazine belt, the WBC middleweight title and a lineal prestige. Agreeing to box Canelo Álvarez (46-1 with 1 DRAW, 32 knockouts) at a catch-weight of 155 pounds, the boxing world has been passionately explaining, it will be the heaviest weight that Amir has ever carried into a professional boxing ring; it will be a glimpse of his elevation through the weight classes, ever since winning the WBA International Lightweight (130 pounds) title with his 20th pro bout against Oisin Fagan in 2008.

Brook gives Khan a chance to beat Canelo

Image: Brook gives Khan a chance to beat CaneloBy Jeff Aranow: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook has every reason in the world to want Amir Khan to lose his fight this Saturday night against WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez due to Khan having turned down fight offers from him and his promoter Eddie Hearn for the last several years including recently.

Brook still is open enough to say he thinks the 29-year-old Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) has a chance of pulling off an upset against Canelo (46-1-1, 32 KOs) if he fights the perfect fight and doesn’t get caught up trying to slug with the Mexican fighter.

Hunter: Khan is taking dangerous fight against Canelo

1-khan-canelo (1)By Jeff Aranow: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) is fighting in the biggest match of his 11-year pro career on Saturday night against the bigger and stronger WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) in a catch-weight of 155lbs.

Khan’s trainer Virgil Hunter sees this fight as a dangerous one for Khan due to the size and punching power that Canelo has. While Khan and Canelo have both looked around the same size in the lead up to this fight, Canelo is going to transform himself like a magician on Saturday night and come into the fight looking like a light heavyweight in the ring by rehydrating to the 170s and possibly the 180s.

WBC president ready to enforce GGG – Canelo agreement

Image: WBC president ready to enforce GGG – Canelo agreementBy Dan Ambrose: WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says he will enforce the agreement between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to strip Canelo of the WBC middleweight title if he or Amir Khan fails to fight GGG next.

Canelo and Golovkin have an agreement with the World Boxing Council that the winner of their next interim fights must then face each other next. Golovkin did of the agreement by beating Dominic Wade last month. Now it’s Canelo’s turn with his interim fight against Khan on Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada.
