Is Canelo a coward or the real deal?

1-CANELO ALVAREZ 05

By Jaime Ortega: Saul Canelo Alvarez lately became criticized for ducking several boxers in the middleweight division. Legendary boxers like Hugo Cesar Chavez have called out Canelo publically, and degraded his boxing achievements on live shows. Canelo not only has received heat by his foes, but his own fan base feel disappointed and betrayed with his last fights.

Even though Canelo is mainly to blame for not fighting GGG, Oscar De La Hoyas Golden Boy promotions is partly responsible for dissing out what could very well be the fight of the year. In my opinion, the fight of the year is Andre Ward versus Sergei Kovalev — should be a tough war — hard to call a winner. But have no doubts Canelo versus GGG would be a titanic matchup with a quick result!

BJ Saunders possible for Canelo vs. Smith undercard

saunders97

By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions are reportedly interested in getting WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) to fight on September 17 on the undercard of their fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s title match against unbeaten WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs).

The idea would be for the 26-year-old Saunders to get some visibility by fighting on the Canelo-Smith undercard on HBO PPV, so that the U.S fans get a chance to see him fight before Canelo faces him in the near future for his WBO 160lb title. Liam Smith and BJ Saunders are both promoted by Frank Warren.

Canelo vs. Smith: Liam could surprise the Mexican, says promoter

smith0000

By Dan Ambrose: WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith’s promoter Frank Warren believes he has a real chance of pulling off an upset against former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) in their fight in two months from now on September 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Warren sees the 27-year-old Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) as the best of the Smith brothers (Paul, Callum and Stephen), and he feels that he is a natural 154lb fighter. He rates Smith as having better punching power than Canelo’s last opponent Amir Khan, who moved up in weight from the welterweight division to face Canelo at a catch-weight of 155lbs last May in Las Vegas.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and the road to GGG

canelo48

By J. Calderon: It appears that former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KO’s) is on track to replace retired former five-division world champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KO’s), not as the next PPV attraction, but as the biggest villain in boxing.

Alvarez, 25, has been barraged relentlessly this week by boxing fans and critics alike, after Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya announced that they will be going after the weakest link in the 154 lb. division: WBO light middleweight champion Liam “Beefy” Smith (23-0-1, 13 KO’s). Some argue that this could be a cherry-pick gone wrong for Oscar, others are perplexed by the baffling and unwarranted rumored purchase price of $70, arguing that they wouldn’t tune in if this was a free fight.

Stephen Espinoza: Canelo vs Golovkin in 2017; it’s just a “Hot Towel”

espinoza

By Reynaldo Sanchez: Stephen Espinoza, SHOWTIME executive Vice President, is not convinced that the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez – Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight, will take place in September 2017. Espinoza believes that this announcement it is just a hot towel to calm the wave of criticism being targeted towards Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions.

Espinoza is not sure this fight will ever happen and his opinion is that Golden Boy Promotions made this announcement because they were practically forced by the criticism that arose in social networks, after Canelo Alvarez left the WBC belt to avoid a fight with his mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo to fight on December 10 on regular HBO

Image: Canelo to fight on December 10 on regular HBO

By Dan Ambrose: Besides his fight on September 17th against WBO light middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs), former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) plans on making a quick return on December 10 on regular HBO against an opponent still to be determined, according to Dan Rafael.

The fact that Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy are looking to bring him back so quickly after the Liam Smith fight tells you that they see him beating the British fighter with ease. Three months is not a lot of time for a fighter to come back from fighting in a world title match against a champion. However in this case, Canelo is facing what many see as the weakest of the champions at 154 in Smith.

Sergio Martinez: Canelo will NEVER fight Golovkin

Sergio Martinez

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) doubts that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) will ever fight IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in a mega-fight. Martinez thinks that Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy will never let that fight take place because they want to look out for the best interests for him.

Obviously, Golden Boy wants to also look out for their own best interests, and clearly it’s better for them if Canelo doesn’t get knocked out by Golovkin. Canelo can make good money fighting guys that are sure thing wins like Amir Khan and Liam Smith.

Liam Smith can beat Canelo Alvarez, says Gallagher

smith1111

By Scott Gilfoid: Joe Gallagher, the trainer for WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs), believes his fighter has a very good chance of pulling off the upset by beating former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1 33 KOs) in their fight in less than three months from now on September 17 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gallagher thinks Smith, 27, can win as long as he soundly beats Canelo in a conclusive enough way to where he can’t lose by a decision or by knocking him out. Gallagher notes that Amir Khan recently fought Canelo last May in a fight in which Khan appeared to win many of the first five rounds of the contest.

The judges gave most of those rounds to Canelo, and they had Khan trailing in the fight at the time that he was knocked out in round six.

Gennady Golovkin: Nothing left to prove at 160?

Image: Gennady Golovkin: Nothing left to prove at 160?

By J. Calderon: We get it, WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KO’s) is presumably the best at 160. What we don’t get, is why GGG continues to beat at a dead horse in a stubborn attempt to unify the middleweight division. GGG now has three of the four major organizational belts, thanks in part to a giving and generous former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KO’s) who seemed happy to oblige with Gennady’s ultimatum: “Give me my belt, hey, I need my belt.”

The last remaining belt is in possession of WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KO’s), who insists that he is willing to face GGG, but the money has to be right. An eerily similar response was heard from another highly desired Golovkin opponent, WBA (regular) middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KO’s).

Jacobs says Golovkin fight can happen in 1 1/2 years from now

jacobs444

By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs (31-1, 28 KOs) says he probably won’t be facing IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) for another 1 ½ years from now. In other words, Jacobs is using the same approach as Mexican star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez to wait a year and a half before he decides to fight Golovkin. Jacobs and Canelo both seem to be calling the shots with Golovkin by saying when the fight can happen and when it can’t happen. The question is will Golovkin let himself be led by the nose by Canelo and Jacobs or will he tell them to get lost when they show interest in a year and a half from now? Golovkin might be better off telling Canelo and Jacobs that if they want to fight him, then they should work their way up the rankings to become his mandatory challenger.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy believe the Canelo-Golovkin fight will be a bigger one if they let it marinate until the fall of 2017. It’ unknown if it will be bigger, especially if Canelo isn’t going to be facing the big enough names to increase his own star power. You would have to assume that Canelo isn’t getting more popular with each fight.
