Canelo will never fight Golovkin, says Jackson

canelo87

By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will never fight Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, according to Sergey Kovalev’s trainer John David Jackson. He doesn’t see Canelo’s promoters at Golden Boy Promotions ever letting Canelo take the fight against Golovkin for fear that if he loses to the Kazahstan fighter, it will cause him to stop bringing in money to Golden Boy.

Jackson sees Canelo as the only money maker that Golden Boy has right now, and he doesn’t see them taking any chances of losing him by putting him in with a dangerous fighter like Triple G. Jackson thinks that Golden Boy will keep pushing the 34-year-old Golovkin fight into the future until he’s old and not the fighter that he is now. These thoughts are echoed by many boxing fans, who see Canelo and Golden Boy waiting until Golovkin is old, toothless and using a walker to get around the ring before they eventually face him. Canelo is only 26, so he can wait another 10 years if he wants until Golovkin is 44 before making that fight in order to increase his chances of winning if he wants to.

Jackson thinks that they’ll go ahead and match Canelo against an old Golovkin, possibly in 2018.

Saunders won’t be fighting on Canelo vs. Smith card

saunders5533

By Dan Ambrose: Billy Joe Saunders has turned down fights against a number of middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s past victims, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be defending his World Boxing Organization middleweight title on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Liam Smith card on September 17. What a pity.

I can’t say I’m surprised. I mean, it’s not as if Saunders didn’t already have tons of opportunities to defend his WBO strap. According to Dan Rafael, Saunders turned down fights against the following top middleweights: Gabriel Rosado, Curtis Stevens, and Willie Monroe Jr. Saunders opted not to fight Golovkin in the past.

“Per @Golden Boy Boxing, Saunders won’t be on the Canelo=Smith PPV because he turned down a fight with Gabe Rosado. #boxing. “”Golden Boy also said when names such as Curtis Stevens and Willie Monroe were suggested for Saunders to fight they were also turned down. Golden Boy also said when names such as Curtis Stevens and Willie Monroe were suggested for Saunders to fight they were also turned down. Saunders ran from GGG and now he’s turning down all his victims too (Stevens, Rosado, Monroe). lol,”

Canelo vs. Smith: Will this fight sell?

canelo111

By Scott Gilfoid: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has decided to dip down in weight to drain to 154 to fight little known WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith next month on September 17 at At&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. HBO has given the Canelo vs. Smith fight the green light to be televised on pay-per-view with their network despite the 27-year-old Smith not being a recognizable name to the average casual boxing fan in the U.S.

Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions might as well have selected some hopeless 2nd tier fighter for him to fight because it’s pretty much the equivalent of the guy that he’ll be facing next month in Smith.

Roach: Canelo vs. Smith will be competitive

canelo700

By Dan Ambrose: Liam Smith could prove to be a more difficult obstacle than many boxing fans expect him to be when he defends his WBO junior middleweight title next month against Golden Boy Promotion’s flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) on September 17 on HBO pay-per-view from AT&T Arena in Arlington, Texas.

The unbeaten Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) is seen as an easy mark for the 26-year-old Canelo in the eyes of a lot of fans, many of which who have already written him off without having even seen him fight before. One person who has seen the 27-year-old Smith fight in the past is trainer Freddie Roach, who sees him as a very tough fight for Canelo.

Billy Joe Saunders targeted for Canelo vs. Smith undercard

saunders97

By Dan Ambrose: It’s looking more and more like WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders could very well wind up on the undercard of the Saul Canelo Alvarez vs. Liam Smith fight on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. According to Dan Rafael, Golden Boy Promotions, the promoters for Canelo, are working with Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren to have the unbeaten Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) defend his World Boxing Organization title on the undercard of the Canelo-Smith fight.

With Saunders being on the card, it would mean that Canelo would be a likely opponent for him in December when he moves back up to the middleweight division. If Canelo and Saunders both win on September 17, then the two of them could face each other in December. It would give the 26-year-ol Canelo the chance of winning two quick titles within three months of each other with him first beating the smaller Liam Smith for his WBO 154lb strap, and then moving up to fight Saunders for his WBO 160lb title in December.

Salido: Canelo isn’t a superstar, he’s protected

canelo600

By Dan Ambrose: Former two division world champion Orlando Salido doesn’t believe that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is a true superstar, because he feels that the 26-year-old is being protected from facing the best. In Salido’s mind, fighters that are the best in boxing are the ones that are willing to take on the very best no matter what the risks involved. Salido doesn’t see that happening with Canelo. Salido thinks that Canelo will lose to unbeaten IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) if the two of them ever face each other in the future.

At this point, it’s unknown if they were ever will, because Canelo opted not to fight Triple G in 2016, and he didn’t fight him in 2015 either. If Canelo doesn’t face Golovkin in 2017, it would be the third straight year where he’s not faced him.

Golovkin talks Canelo, Brook and Eubank Jr

golovkin77

(Photo Courtesy/Lawrence Lustig, Matchroom Boxing) By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin has much respect for his next opponent welterweight Kell Brook, who he’ll be facing on September 10 next month at the O2 Arena in London, UK. The two fighters met today in London for their press conference over there.

Golovkin made it clear that he wants to give the British boxing fans a “big present” on September 10 in his fight against Brook, which he promises to be a real “drama show.” That means that Golovkin plans on knocking Brook out and making him his 23rd consecutive knockout win.

Khan: Canelo weighed 187 when he fought me

Image: Khan: Canelo weighed 187 when he fought me

By Dan Ambrose: Amir “King” Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) says that former WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) was 187 pounds on the night that they fought on May 7 earlier this year in their fight on HBO pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. What’s interesting is that HBO didn’t give a rehydrated weight for Canelo to the viewing audience like they normally do for fighters on their broadcasts.

The boxing fans were left to speculate what weight that Canelo weighed in for the fight. Khan is saying that Canelo weighed in at 187lbs, which means he rehydrated 32 pounds after weighing in at 155lbs for their catch-weight fight.

GGG’s promoter: Canelo has tough fight against Smith

canelo96

By Dan Ambrose: Gennady Golovkin’s trainer Tom Loeffler believes that Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has a tough fight on his hands in his title challenge against WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Loeffler isn’t saying that Canelo will lose to Smith, but he still sees this as a very, very tough fight for Canelo. The weight alone will be a battle for Canelo to prove that he can get down to 154 on fight night. Canelo hasn;t fought at junior middleweight for three years despite the fact that Golden Boy Promotions are saying that he’s a junior middleweight. It’s hard to buy into that argument when your fighter isn’t fighting in that weight class.

The fight is perceived by many boxing fans as an easy fight for the heavier, more powerful Canelo, who will be coming down in weight one pound from his normal weight at 155lbs. Losing an extra pound could be difficult for Canelo, because he’s already rehydrating into the 170s and some think the 180s. We’re talking about a fighter that will be losing 20 to 25 pounds of water weight to make weight for his match against Smith.

Image: Rosado vs. Saunders possible for Canelo-Smith card

By Dan Ambrose: #13 WBC former world title challenger Gabriel Rosado (23-9, 13 KOs) reportedly is in the running for a fight against unbeaten WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (23-0, 12 KOs) on the undercard of the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Liam Smith card on September 17 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Golden Boy Promotions are looking to add Saunders to the undercard of the fight card with the possible idea of matching Canelo against him later this year in December or at some point in the near future.

Golden Boy wants to move Canelo up to middleweight soon, and a fight against Saunders is thought to be Canelo’s first at the full weight of 160 pounds.
