By Allan Fox: IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin isn’t too interested in discussing a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez after he failed to face him in 2016. Golovkin says he’s tired of the 26-year-old Canelo’s talking, and now sees the Golden Boy Promotions fighter as a “sailfish.” In other words, a big game fish that is very hard to catch.
Canelo Alvarez
Santos Saul Álvarez Barragán, better known as Canelo, which translates to ‘cinnamon’ for his fiery red hair, has spiced up the boxing scene since his debut. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1990, this pugilist has clinched world championships across four weight divisions, making him a staple in the Hall of Fame pantry. Canelo unified titles in three divisions and claimed lineal championships in two, notably overpowering Miguel Cotto in 2015 for the WBC, Ring, and lineal middleweight crowns. Outside the ring, Canelo’s life is just as sweet, sharing it with his two kids, Emily Cinnamon Alvarez and Mía Ener Álvarez, and his wife, Fernanda Gómez, since 2021. According to Forbes, Canelo is worth at least $275 million!
Chavez Jr. will make 164.5 easily for Canelo fight says Heredia
By Dan Ambrose: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s strength and conditioning coach Memo Heredia isn’t worried in the least about him making the 164 ½ pound catch-weight limit for his fight against Golden Boy Promotions star Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on May 6 on HBO PPV. Heredia says the 30-year-old Chavez Jr. is at 181 lbs. right now, and he’s not far from the catch-weight limit of 164.5lbs for his fight against the 26-year-old Canelo at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chavez: Junior’s hard training will lead to win over Canelo
By Dan Ambrose: Mexican boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. says his on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) is taking training for his big fight against former two division world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) very seriously for their May 6 fight on HBO pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Chavez Jr: Canelo struggles against bigger fighters
By Dan Ambrose: The 6’0” Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has already seen a flaw in the game of Golden Boy Promotions fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez from watching his past fights, and that’s how he struggles when he faces bigger guys. Chavez Jr. notes that Canelo had problems in his fights against Erislandy Lara and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Chavez Jr. is obviously going to be looking to take advantage of his own size advantage over the 5’8” Canelo when the two of them fight each other on HBO pay-per-view on May 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Canelo-Chavez Jr. bigger than Canelo-Golovkin says De La Hoya
By Dan Ambrose: The May 6th fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) is viewed by Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya as the bigger fight than Canelo vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Canelo and Chavez Jr. will be fighting on HBO PPV at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya says there are only a couple hundred tickets remaining for the fight. He’s calling a sellout right now. Canelo vs. Chavez Jr. probably will sellout well before May 6, but that doesn’t mean that the fight is a bigger one than a potential match between Canelo and Golovkin.
De La Hoya: Canelo and Chavez Jr. will be fighting a war
By Dan Ambrose: If Oscar De La Hoya’s prediction comes true, Mexico stars Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be fighting a “civil war” on May 6 in their fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. De La Hoya calls it a civil war due to both fighters being Mexican. It should be interesting to see if the fight does turn out to be a war.
Chavez Jr. doubts Canelo will keep his word about bet
By Dan Ambrose: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. recently bet their purses on the outcome of their May 6th fight on HBO PPV. However, Chavez Jr. wants to make it a legal bet by having them sign a contract, because he doesn’t trust Canelo due to him having told middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin that he would fight him after he had beaten Amir Khan last May. Chavez Jr. noted that Canelo didn’t keep his word, and ended up not only not fighting Golovkin, but also vacating his WBC 160lb title.
If Canelo and Chavez Jr. do make it legal and bet their purses, the winner of the bet is going to have a lot of money. It’s a great deal for Chavez Jr., because he’s not getting the purse that Canelo is for this fight. By making a bet on Canelo’s purse, Chavez Jr. could walk away with a massive purse for the fight if he actually gets the money from the Golden Boy Promotions star.
De La Hoya says Canelo-Golovkin match depends on outcome of Chavez Jr. fight
By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says that he still hopes to match Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in September, but it depends on how things go in May 6 fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Canelo (48-1-1, 34 KOs) is fighting Chavez Jr. (50-2-1, 32 KOs) on HBO pay-per-view at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
De La Hoya says that if Canelo loses to Chavez Jr. or if there fight is very exciting for the boxing public, then there would be a rematch. Golden Boy already has plans for Canelo to fight Miguel Cotto in December, and that’s obviously not going to change.
