Rafael Marquez suffers fractured right orbital bone

marquez123By Eric Thomas: 38-year-old former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-9, 37 KO’s) suffered a heavy price in getting stopped in the 9th round by 30-year-old super bantamweight Efrain Esquivias (17-2-1, 10 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.

Marquez reportedly suffered a fractured right orbital bone, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Marquez was knocked down by a right hand from Esquivias in the 9th. After Marquez got back up, he staggered to his corner and the fight was halted.

lopez44By Dan Ambrose: As part of the Chris Arreola vs. Seth Mitchell card on HBO on September 6th, 38-year-old former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-8, 37 KO’s) will be facing Efrain Esquivias (16-2-1, 9 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout, and welterweight Josesito Lopez (30-6, 18 KO’s) will be trying to halt his 2-fight losing streak against Aaron Martinez (19-2-1, 4 KO’s) in a 10 round bout at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, USA.

This really isn’t much of an undercard. Marquez is way, way past his prime and Josesito Lopez’s 15 minutes of fame appears to be over now that he’s been stopped by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Marcos Maidana in back to back fights.

Both Mijares and Marquez have moved up in weight to the super bantamweight as they’ve aged but neither are considered a major player at super bantamweight despite the fact that they’re fighting for the WBC Silver bantamweight strap. It’s just a trinket offered up by the World Boxing Council to try and give the fight some kind of meaning when there’s not much to get from this given their positions in the division.

If Hearn can get one of those fighters for Frampton, then this fight will be on the same card as former EBU light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey’s next fight in January.
