By Jason Kim: The younger 31-year-old former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (47-6-2, 22 KO’s) defeated 37-year-old former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-8, 37 KO’s) by a 9th round TKO to win the vacant WBC Silver bantamweight title at the Arena Cuidad de Mexico, in Mexico City, Mexico.

In the 9th, Mijares overwhelmed and exhausted and hurt Marquez with a flurry of shots after catching him against the ropes. The fight was then halted.

Mijares had to overcome an early assault from Marquez in the first two rounds, as Marquez landed some really hard shots as he went for broke trying to get an early knockout. In the 1st round, Marquez lost a point after accidentally colliding heads with Mijares that opened up a cut over Mijares’ right eye. It was a very strange point deduction because you could see that it was an accident on Marquez’s part in bumping heads with Mijares and wasn’t intentional.

Marquez began to tire out by the 3rd round as he lost steam on his punches and looked slower and slower. The bigger and younger Mijares was then able to punish Marquez on the inside with uppercuts and flurry on him.

Mijares looked a lot heavier than Marquez and it would have been interesting to know how much heavier he was.

Overall, Mijares looked decent. I can’t see him beating anyone really good at bantamweight. Guys like Vic Darchinyan, Nonito Donaire, Abner Mares, Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Guillermo Rigondeaux, Ricardo Cardoba, and Victor Terrazas are simply too good for Mijares.

Former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa (47-7, 28 KO’s) defeated Myung Ho Lee (15-3, 5 KO’s) by a 10 round majority decision. The final scores were 95-95, 96-94 and 96-94. Much of the action was toe-to-toe and both fighter’s faces were badly swollen up around the mouth area by the end of the fight. It wasn’t an impressive win for 33-year-old Sosa.
