Fernando Beltran, the promoter for Salido, like the idea of matching Salido up against the 36-year-old Rafael, who is the younger brother of former three division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez.

Beltran told RingTV “Rafael Marquez is fighting on May 5 or May 12, and probably after that, if all goes okay, that would be a matchmaker’s dream to put Rafael Marquez against Orlando Salido.”

In addition to a possible Salido-Marquez fight, undefeated #2 WBO contender Miguel “Mikey” Garcia (28-0, 24 KO’s) is also an option for Salido. Beltran said “Mikey Garcia is in our plans, and I think that would be a great fight and that he is a great prospect in progress.”

From the way Beltran described Garcia, it doesn’t look as if he’s in the immediate plans and that’s kind of understandable. Garcia doesn’t have a huge name for the fight to really big right now like it could be a year from now if Salido is able to hold onto the title for that long. Garcia needs more experience because he’s still facing 2nd tier opposition and has yet to really cut his teeth on a true 1st tier fighter.

Beltran would like to match Salido against WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire if he were to move up in weight to take the fight. Don’t hold your breath waiting for that to happen, though, because Donaire fights for Top Rank and it’s doubtful they’ll want to risk his future by putting him in with Salido and watching him take apart another Top Rank fighter.

Salido destroyed Juan Manuel Lopez for the second time in their rematch last Saturday night in his 10th round TKO win. Lopez fights for Top Rank. Donaire had been mentioned as a possible future opponent for Lopez in what would have been a Top Rank in house fight, but Salido ruined all that by beating Lopez again. Now you can pretty much forget about a fight between Donaire and Lopez. But you can also probably completely forget about Donaire being matched against Salido. Donaire looked horrible in beating Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. recently, and took a beating in that fight. Salido is a lot tougher than Vazquez Jr. with more power and a higher work rate. He’d walk through Donaire’s shots and likely stop him even easier than he did Lopez.
