McCloskey could still land Khan fight next year, says Shah

Image: McCloskey could still land Khan fight next year, says ShahBy William Mackay: Light welterweight Paul McCloskey (24-2, 12 KO’s) didn’t luck out in getting a rematch against Amir Khan in December like he was hoping to get, but he still has a chance of getting a fight with him in 2013, says Khan’s father Shah Khan. McCloskey lost to Khan last year in April when McCloskey suffered a cut over his left eye from an accidental head clash in the 6th round in that fight. The ringside door then quickly halted the fight despite the fact that the cut really wasn’t all that bad looking when examined after the fight.

In an interview at the Londonderrysentinel.co.uk, Shah Khan said “It’s [Khan vs. McCloskey rematch] still a possibility for the future. It was absolutely a fight that Amir might have kept with Paul if the fight was in the UK, not problem, but because he is in America we have a Mexican opponent [Carlos Molina] instead.”

Khan vs. McCloskey II possible for December 8th or 15th

Image: Khan vs. McCloskey II possible for December 8th or 15thBy Scott Gilfoid: With his boxing career on the ropes after two straight losses, former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) could be on the verge of taking his career in reverse by fighting 2nd tier former light welterweight contender Paul McCloskey (24-2, 12 KO’s) on December 8th or 15th. McCloskey’s manager Francie McNicholl said to the BBC that they’ve contacted by Khan’s team about a fight in December.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Khan will fight McCloskey because unbeaten welterweight contender Diego Chaves reportedly also has been contacted about fighting Khan in December as well.

McCloskey-Perez, Frampton-Molitor & Selby-Lindsay on September 22nd

Image: McCloskey-Perez, Frampton-Molitor & Selby-Lindsay on September 22ndBy Scott Gilfoid: Paul McCloskey (23-2, 12 KO’s) will be fighting this month against light welterweight contender Manuel Perez (18-7-1, 4 KO’s) along with Commonwealth/IBF Inter-Continental super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton (14-0, 9 KO’s) vs. former IBF super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor (34-2, 12 KO’s) at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.

I honestly don’t see either Frampton and especially McCloskey winning these fights. I can see them winning controversial decisions, but as far as actually winning the fights without controversy, nope, I can’t see that happening. Molitor, 32, is too big of a step up for the short and limited Frampton. Molitor knows how to fight and Frampton is going to be in shock at how much better he is compared to the fodder that’s been thrown in with him his entire career. That’s not a little jump up in competition that’s a rocket to the moon in terms of quality compared to the 3rd tier guys that Frampton has been fighting. I think Molitor is going to box Frampton’s head off in this fight.
