Prediction: Frampton to taste defeat from Molitor; McCloskey to win controversial decision over Perez

By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten Carl Frampton (14-0, 9 KO’s) will be defending his Commonwealth and IBF Inter-Continental super bantamweight titles on Saturday night against former IBF super bantamweight champion Steve Molitor (34-2, 12 KO’s) in what will be Frampton’s first real test of his three year pro career at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.

Frampton is stepping out of his class in taking this fight with the 32-year-old Molitor on Saturday, and I think we’re going to see a painful example of why it’s not a good idea to jump from domestic level straight into world class without stopping off at the European level to prove that you belong fighting world class opposition. Molitor is just so much better than anyone that Frampton has ever fought before that it’s frightening.

Frampton said to Irishboxing.com “Ok, he is better than anyone I ever fought, but it hasn’t once come into my head that I am going to lose, so in that regard it’s exactly the same.”

Look, Frampton, isn’t doesn’t matter what’s inside of your head. It’s what’s going to be hitting your head in this fight and that’s going to be Molitor’s fists. This isn’t mental. This is physical and real stuff, not in your head.

I see Frampton getting badly whipped by Molitor to the point where Frampton’s corner may have to stop it to save Frampton for another day. It’s too soon for him.

Also on the card will be former EBU and British light welterweight champion Paul McCloskey (23-2, 12 KO’s) taking on #8 WBA Manuel Perez (18-7-1, 4 KO’s) in what you could consider a last chance type fight for the 33-year-old McCloskey, who has lost two out of his last three fights and really you can say he’s lost his last three fights because McCloskey’s win over Breidis Prescott last year was a decision that few boxing fans outside of the UK agreed with. I mean, it was overwhelmingly in Prescott’s favor among non-UK fans who had no dog in that hunt. Likewise, I had Prescott winning the fight with ease. I only gave McCloskey one round and I felt like I was being kind in giving him that round.

Perez is a much better fighter than McCloskey and he’ll show it by dominating him the entire fight. I still don’t think Perez will be given the decision, though. I see it as another controversial win for McCloskey. I hope not, but that’s probably what’s going to happen.
