Mikey Garcia to imitate Mayweather for sparring with Maidana

garcia324By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia 34-0, 28 KOs) will be helping out title challenger Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) sparring to get him ready for his rematch against WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KOs) on September 13th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mikey is the brother of Maidana’s trainer Robert Garcia, and he wanted to the opportunity to spar with Maidana and help get ready. Mikey’s job will be to try and imitate Mayweather’s style as best as he can. It’s not going to be easy because Mikey is smaller than Mayweather, and he fights nothing like him.

Robert Garcia: Ariza won’t be with Rios, Mikey Garcia or Maidana any longer

ariza5634By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia says that he’ll no longer be using strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza for any of his fighters at his gym at Oxnard, California.

Robert isn’t saying why he’s cut ties with Ariza other than saying that they had some differences. This will effect Robert’s fighters Mikey Garcia, Marcos Maidana and Brandon Rios, all of which Ariza helped with their conditioning for their recent fights.

Brandon Rios has a fight coming up on August 2nd against Diego Chaves (23-1, 19 KO’s) at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Rios is going to need someone good to help make weight for this fight at welterweight, because he barely made weight for his fight against Manny Pacquiao last year in November despite the fact that he was moving up in weight from the light welterweight division.

Mikey is the younger brother of trainer Robert Garcia, who is currently training Marcos Maidana with hopes of being the first ones to give Mayweather a loss on May 3.

Mikey Garcia looking to get out of contract with Top Rank

garcia324By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) is reportedly looking to get out of his contract with Top Rank, according to Fightnews. Garcia, 26, has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to break the contract. He filed the lawsuit from Riverside, California. There will be a hearing on October 26th.

It’s unclear whether Mikey will continue fighting with Top Rank while he waits for the outcome of his lawsuit or if he’ll continue to fight with them until he finds out what the outcome will be.

Garcia is someone that was mentioned as a potential future opponent for Manny Pacquiao. That would be a fight that Mikey would make huge money if it were to be made.

Why did Top Rank kill Garcia-Gamboa fight

garcia7867By Robert “Big Moe” Elmore: I read Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum’s comments about matching rising featherweight star Mickey Garcia and Cuban Yurioskis Gamboa. There are two sides to this coin and let’s starts with heads. Gamboa was set to fight Brandon Rios in 2012. Gamboa reneged on the contract that was signed because he reportedly unhappy with his 1.1 million dollar pay day. He also stated that there was never a contract to fight Rios.(http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/boxing/top-rank-sues-yuriorkis-gamboa-brandon-rios-now-213642277.html)

Gamboa skipped two press tours thus causing Top Rank to take legal action against Gamboa. The Cuban was then picked up rapper turned promoter Curtis Jackson. But since signing with Jackson, he’s only had two fights. Arum has expressed doubts that Gamboa would do the same to Garcia that he did to Rios. I can see why Arum would be skeptical about putting this fight together.

Arum says no to Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Mikey Garcia fight

gamboa434By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has shut down any chance of having his fighter Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) face unbeaten Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) in the near future. Arum doesn’t want to let the Mikey-Gamboa fight take place because Gamboa walked out on a fight against one of Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters Brandon Rios two years ago.

Gamboa was supposed to fight Rios, but he failed to show at the press conference to announce the fight. Arum then had to get Richard Abril to face Rios. In hindsight, it’s probably a good thing that Gamboa chose not to take the fight against Rios, because Abril was totally robbed after dominating Rios over 12 rounds. Rios appeared to win 1 round of the fight, yet the judges gave him the decision. Had it been Gamboa in there against Rios, it’s hard to see him doing any better than Abril did, as he really made Rios look bad.

Arum says Mikey Garcia – Yuriorkis Gamboa fight depends on HBO putting up the money

mikey5By Dan Ambrose: If the proposed May 17th fight between interim WBA lightweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s) and unbeaten former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) is going to happen it’ll depend on if HBO can come up with the money to make it take place, says Mikey’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank. He believes he can get the fight put together if HBO can come up with the green to make the fight get made. Both fighters want the fight, and Arum is interested in staging the fight as well.

Arum kind of has to match Mikey up with Gamboa in order to set up a fight with Manny Pacquiao and Mikey in the future. Mikey needs a credible opponent for him to fight, because the only quality fighter he’s faced during his career is Orlando Salido, and their fight failed to go the distance due to Mikey saying he couldn’t breath after he suffered a broken nose in the 8th round.

Gamboa thinks Rios is trying to take attention away from Mikey

rios7By Dan Ambrose: Former WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa thinks that Brandon Rios is purposely trying to insert himself into his attempt to get a fight against his stable-mate WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia. Gamboa wants to fight Mikey, and expose him to be a flawed fighter not in his class. But Gamboa is finding Rios inserting himself into the picture almost on a daily basis with him trash talking Gamboa on twitter, and asking for a fight with him.

It makes no sense for Gamboa to fight a struggling fighter like Rios given that he’s lost his last two fights, and is barely making the 147 lb. division at this point in his career. Gamboa is starting to wonder whether Rios is being told to start stuff with him in order to get Gamboa’s attention off of Mikey.

Mikey Garcia vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa in the works for May 17th, says Arum

mikey544By Chris Williams: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) could be on the verge of facing his first real test of his career in Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-0, 16 KO’s). According to Steve Kim, Bob Arum of Top Rank is looking to put together a fight between Mikey and Gamboa for May 17th at the LA Forum.

The 26-year-old Mikey is in a situation where he has to take on a really tough opponent in his next fight at lightweight for him to be able to be taken serious as an opponent for Manny Pacquiao in September. If Arum tries to push another Juan Carlos Burgos opponent for Mikey to fight, it’s not going to fly with the boxing public, and it probably won’t go over too well with HBO either.
