garcia324By Dan Ambrose: WBO super featherweight champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KO’s) is reportedly looking to get out of his contract with Top Rank, according to Fightnews. Garcia, 26, has filed a lawsuit in an attempt to break the contract. He filed the lawsuit from Riverside, California. There will be a hearing on October 26th.

It’s unclear whether Mikey will continue fighting with Top Rank while he waits for the outcome of his lawsuit or if he’ll continue to fight with them until he finds out what the outcome will be.

Garcia is someone that was mentioned as a potential future opponent for Manny Pacquiao. That would be a fight that Mikey would make huge money if it were to be made. However, with Mikey still fighting at super featherweight, he would have to move up in weight quickly to get the fight with the aging 35 year-old Pacquiao before he ends his career within the next 2 years.

Plans for a fight between Mikey and Yuriorkis Gamboa recently went up in smoke for some reason. It was a fight that Gamboa wanted, but he was told that it wasn’t going to happen. It would have definitely been a tossup fight due to Gamboa’s fast hands, excellent defensive skills and good power.

Mikey is coming off of a 12 round decision win over Juan Carlos Burgos last January. He’s also beaten Roman Marquez, Juan Manuel Lopez and Orlando Salido within the past year.

If Garcia can leave Top Rank, he would have access to Golden Boy Promotions’ fighters, but he would still need to move up to at least the light welterweight division if he wanted to be in position to get the big names that would bring him good money. Fighting at super featherweight and/or lightweight will limit Mikey’s opportunities. He definitely needs to move up in weight and do it soon. He’s 26, but he needs to keep moving from division to division.
