Marquez not worried about Alvarado’s size; motivated for Pacquiao rematch

marquez000000By Dan Ambrose: Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) will be entering the ring the much smaller fighter tonight in his 143 lb catch weight fight against Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. Marquez, 40, says he’s not worried about being the smaller guy in this fight, because he feels that his skills and his punches will be enough to carry him to victory. That remains to be seen though, because Marquez lost his last fight to Tim Bradley, and he looked like he’d lost a lot from his game since his victory over Manny Pacquiao in 2012.

Marquez needs a victory tonight to get an important 5th fight against Pacquiao for later this year. Marquez explains that the reason why he changed his mind about wanting to fight Pacquiao now is because he’s now the WBO welterweight champion, and that he feels that Pacquiao is the best of the 147 lb champions in the division.

An Alvarado victory over Marquez could be bad for Arum and Top Rank

alvarado5667By Chris Williams: Bob Arum of Top Rank likes the idea of matching Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) up against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao for later this year, because Marquez is really one of the last guys that Arum has in his Top Rank stable that he can match against Pacquiao and bring in reasonably big pay-per-view numbers.

If Mike Alvarado, a fighter without a huge fan base, beats Marquez in their fight tomorrow night at the Forum in Inglewood, California, it’ll likely mean that Pacquiao’s next fight will bring in far less than 1 million PPV buys once again. The difference between Marquez fighting Pacquiao and Alvarado facing him are fairly huge. That’s why it’s crucial that Marquez win tomorrow night for Pacquiao’s next fight to do well on PPV.

Weights: Marquez 141.6, Alvarado 143.2

marquez7By Dan Ambrose: Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) made weight in Friday’s weigh-in for his fight tomorrow night against Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. Marquez weighed in at 141.6 lbs, and he looked thin and drained for the fight. Marquez is an expert at making weight, but he had room to come in closer to the weight limit and didn’t need to come in this light. For his part, Alvarado weighed in at 143.2 lbs. The catch weight limit for the fight is 143 lbs. Marquez didn’t make a big deal about Alvarado being slightly over the limit.

The Marquez-Alvarado fight isn’t an official eliminator, but it amounts to the same because their promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank has already let it be known that he’s going to have the winner of the Marquez-Alvarado fight challenger WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao later this year.

Alvarado: Marquez doesn’t belong in the ring with younger lions anymore

alvarado7By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) sees 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) as an old lion that is standing in his way from a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao that would set him up for life with millions in the bank. Alvarado doesn’t want to let Marquez ruin his big payday fight against Pacquiao. Alvarado realizes that he can’t lose this fight due to what’s at stake for him. Marquez has already made his millions in his four fights with Pacquiao, and now Alvarado wants his turn at going to the bank.

“He [Marquez] doesn’t belong in the ring with younger lions anymore. He’s a grandpa lion,” Alvarado said while laughing long and loud. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to win. I’m really not worried about Marquez.

Pacquiao wants to fight Marquez-Alvarado winner, says Arum

jmm_ko_pacBy Chris Williams: To no one’s great surprise, Manny Pacquiao wants to fight the winner of this Saturday’s clash between the aging Mexican star 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) and Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. Arum has confirmed with Pacquiao that he wants the winner of this fight, so this is what boxing fans will likely be seeing in September for Pacquiao’s next fight.

Pacquiao can’t fight the winner of the June 7th fight between Sergio Martinez and Miguel Cotto unless he waits until later in the year, because the winner of that fight will likely be nicked up and unable to fight in September.

Alon Dy’s Prediction For Marquez-Alvarado Fight

marquezBy Alon Calinao Dy: The 40-year-old Mexican boxer Juan Manuel Marquez is going to face Mike Alvarado this Saturday at the Forum in Inglewood, California, and the winner of this bout is the mandatory challenger to WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao.

Marquez lost via split decision to Timothy Bradley last June 2013. Last month, Pacquiao regained his WBO crown via unanimous decision over Bradley. Marquez wants that belt that’s why he is planning to go for another battle against Pacquiao.

Comparing Alvarado to Bradley, I guess Bradley is tougher than him since Tim did not experience a knockout loss. I also believe that Alvarado is not a threat to Marquez due to the fact that he already had a TKO loss to Ruslan Provodnikov last October. Marquez is a technician and a counter-puncher that will definitely school the younger Alvarado in their upcoming fight.

Alvarado looking forward to Pacquiao clash if he gets passed Marquez

alvarado665By Chris Williams: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) says his goal is to get the Manny Pacquiao fight for September by beating the 40-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Forum, in Inglewood, California, USA. While Bob Arum of Top Rank has matched up many of his other 140 and 147 pound fighters in his Top Rank stable with Pacquiao in order to increase their popularity and bring in new blood, Arum skipped over Alvarado for some reason.

It could be that Alvarado, before he was beaten by Ruslan Provodnikov, was considered to be too much of a grueling fight for Pacquiao due to the power that he possesses and because of his size. Whatever the case, Alvarado is poised to finally get a huge payday fight against Pacquiao, provided that he beats Marquez on Saturday.

Alvarado must attack Marquez constantly to win, says Tim Bradley

alvarado23By Dan Ambrose: Former WBO welterweight champion Tim Bradley thinks that Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) must come directly at Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) this Saturday and focus on throwing a lot of punches for him to have a chance at beating the 40-year-old fighter at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

Bradley doesn’t think Alvarado has the boxing skills to move around the ring the way he did in beating Marquez, so he must focus on doing what he does best by trying to outwork him. Marquez is a counter puncher who is capable of throwing little more than 40 punches per round under the best of circumstances, Bradley says. If Alvarado throws more shots each round, he has a better chance of winning.

Kellerman: Marquez could show his age against Alvarado

marquez#1By Dan Ambrose: HBO’s Max Kellerman is giving Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) a decent chance of pulling off an upset on Saturday night in his fight against Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Kellerman thinks that Alvarado’s size and youth could be a factor in him beating the 40-year-old Marquez.

Kellerman acknowledges that Alvarado was stopped in his last fight by slugger Ruslan Provodnikov last October, but he sees Provodnikov as being a much different fighter than Marquez. The things that Provodnikov was able to do to Alvarado are things that Marquez will have problems trying to duplicate because he’s a much different fighter.

Marquez faces Alvarado on Saturday to set up 5th fight with Pacquiao

marquez03By Dan Ambrose: Juan Manuel Marquez (55-7-1, 40 KO’s) will have a lot on the line this Saturday night against Mike Alvarado (34-2, 23 KO’s) at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Not only will the 40-year-old Marquez have a big payday fight against Manny Pacquiao on the line, but you can pretty much say that Marquez’s career will be on the line.

A loss to Alvarado will effectively signal an end to Marquez’s long 21-year pro career. Marquez can continue fighting, but he’ll be playing out his string and won’t have anywhere to go. I suppose we could still see Bob Arum of Top Rank draft Marquez out for a fifth fight against Pacquiao even with him coming off of a loss, but who will want to see that fight? Arum would be kidding himself to try and sell that fight to the boxing public, but I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if that’s what ends up happening.
