Mike Alvarado making a comeback

alvarado7By Dan Ambrose: 35-year-old former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) says he’s making a comeback in the sport after sitting out of the ring for an entire year following his 3rd round knockout loss to an in shape Brandon Rios last year in January 2015.

Alvarado says he was in a dark place with his life around the time of his fight with Rios, and this took him away from the sport after he was beaten. Alvarado suffered an eye injury in the loss to Rios, and that was partly behind him losing the fight because he couldn’t see out of his right eye after hurting it.

Even if Alvarado is able to stay 100 percent dedicated to his craft, it’s going to be difficult for him to regain what he’s lost.

Rios will now get the biggest possible fights, says Bob Arum

rios9999By Dan Ambrose: After beating up and stopping a totally lost looking Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) last night in three rounds, Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) is about to be setup with nothing but big fights from now on, says his promoter Bob Arum.

While a lot of boxing fans think Alvarado was someone who would have been run over by pretty much any welterweight in the division last night given how truly awful and ill-prepared he looked, Arum believe that Rios really accomplished something with his win over the 34-year-old Alvarado and he wants to reward him by putting him in big fights.

Rios would have given Pacquiao hell last night, says Robert Garcia

rios4222By Dan Ambrose: Robert Garcia, the trainer for #4 WBO welterweight contender Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs), thinks with the way that the 28-year-old Rios fought last night in beating Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) by a 3rd round knockout, Rios would have given Manny Pacquiao a lot of problems if he’d been in the ring with Rios instead of Alvarado.

For boxing fans who may have forgotten, Rios lost a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision to Pacquiao in November 2013. Rio resembled a punching bag in that fight in the eyes of a lot of fans due to him lacking the hand speed, aggressiveness, talent and willingness to walk Pacquiao down in the manner that he needed to in order to have a better chance of winning.

Rios is reborn, Alvarado is dead and buried

rios63By Robbie Bannatyne: In the immediate build up to their 3rd fight there was a groundswell of public opinion that Brandon Rios would prevail against Mike Alvarado. This was in spite of the fact that ‘Mile High’ Mike was able to comfortably out-box Rios in their 2nd contest.

Though whilst many thought that Rios would grind out a late stoppage after a long and grueling fight, no one predicted just how quickly, and clinically the contest would end. If Rios was reborn then Mike Alvarado is dead and buried after being obliterated in 3 brutal rounds by his arch nemesis.

The familiar boxing cliché of the bout being win or bust, obviously resonated with Brandon Rios, who raced out of the blocks to beat up Alvarado from the 1st bell. For Alvarado, who slumped wearily back to his corner after the 3rd round, it was clear that whatever he once had was lost, and was never coming back.

Rios wants Victor Ortiz or Provodnikov next

rios6333By Dan Ambrose: Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) wasn’t setting the bar very high tonight when interviewed after his 3rd round total blowout win over his nemesis Mike Alvarado (34-4, 23 KOs) in a fight televised on HBO, but more worthy of an undercard on ESPN2.

With the cameras on him in being interviewed by HBO, instead of saying he wants a rematch against Manny Pacquiao or a fight against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Rios said he’d be interested in facing Victor Ortiz (30-5-2, 23 KOs) or Ruslan Provodnikov (24-3, 17 KOs) next.

Alvarado: I wasn’t prepared, I’ll be back!

rios44By Jim Dower: Former WBO light welterweight champion Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) had a weak excuse for losing to Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) in a 3rd round TKO defeat on Saturday night after Alvarado quit on his stool after the 3rd round at the 1st Bank Center, in Broomfield, Colorado.

Alvarado said he failed to train for the fight. He said he wasn’t 100 percent due to him having not committed himself to the correct training.

The fight was stopped due to Alvarado complaining of vision problems after the 3rd. He suffered an eye injury in the 1st round when he was hit by an uppercut by Rios in he left eye. Alvarado says he had problems seeing out of the eye after that round.

Rios destroys Alvarado; Ramirez beats Vlasov, looks poor

rios54By Dan Ambrose: #4 WBO Brandon Rios (33-2-1, 24 KOs) may not be good enough to beat the best welterweights in the division, but he proved tonight he can beat what appeared to be a totally shot and out of shape Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) in stopping him in the 3rd round at the 1st Bank Center, Broomfield, Colorado.

For boxing fans hoping to see a good fight in this third fight of their series, they wound up disappointed with Rios treating a timid-looking and poorly prepared Alvarado like a punching bag in nailing him with punch after punch. Rios knocked Alvarado down with a left to the head in the 3rd.

Alvarado to box Rios tonight

alvarado7By Dan Ambrose: Mike Alvarado (34-3, 23 KOs) isn’t going to fight Brandon Rios’ style tonight in their third fight together. Instead, Alvarado plans on sticking with the same game that he used to box circles around Rios the last time they faced each other in 2013. In that fight, Alvarado used movement along with occasional flurries to dominate the slow-moving Rios in winning a 12 round decision.

Rios, 28, has said that he’s adapted a game plan that will negate Alvarado’s ability to move around the ring, and that he plans on cutting off the ring on him to force him to fight the same way that he did in their previous fight on HBO.
