Kevin Mitchell vs. Miguel Vazquez possible for Froch-Groves II undercard on May 31st

mitchell23By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn is looking setup a fight between #7 IBF Kevin Mitchell (36-2, 26 KO’s) and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (34-3, 13 KO’s) on the undercard of the Carl Froch vs. George Groves rematch on May 3rd at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. Hearn is making an offer to Vazquez for him to defend his title against the 29-year-old Mitchell.

For the fight to go through, Mitchell will have to beat journeyman Mikheil Avakyan (21-11-4, 8 KO’s) this Saturday night in their scheduled 8 round bout at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK. This is a mismatch, so it’s pretty much a given that Mitchell will beat this guy.

Shiming vs. Kokiegym and Vazquez vs. Shafikov this Saturday, Feb, 22nd in Macau, China

shiming33By Chris Williams: This Saturday night flyweight prospect Zou Shiming (3-0) will be in the ring against Yokthong Kokiegym (15-3, 11 KO’s) in a scheduled 8 round bout at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Maco, China. Shiming, 32, is being groomed for a title shot in the flyweight division by his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

Thus far, Shiming hasn’t shown the kind of talent that would suggest that he’ll be anything more than a well-known contender. Shiming has shown little power to speak of, and he’s not been impressive in the three fights that he’s had since turning pro in April of last year after capturing two Olympic gold medals for China.

Hearn looking to match Burns against Vazquez or Abril in unification bout

burns43333By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Organization recently ordered WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (36-2-1, 11 KO’s) to start negotiations for a title defense against #1 WBO, Terence Crawford. But instead of doing that, Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn is looking to put him in a unification bout against either WBA champion Richard Abril or IBF champion Miguel Vazquez.

This would enable Burns to bypass Crawford and avoid a likely one-sided loss to the talented fighter. Burns stands a better chance against Abril or Vazquez then he does against Crawford.

Hearn wants Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez after Beltran fight

burns7575By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns promoter Eddie Hearn is like a dog that won’t let go of a bone once he’s got it in his mouth. Hearn really wants a unification match between Burns and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s), and Hearn still seems to want the fight even though Vazquez reportedly priced himself out last time Hearn tried to put a fight together between him and Burns.

The thing is Burns has a fight coming up in 2 weeks against #6 WBO, Raymundo Beltran (28-6, 17 KO’s), and it might be a little pointless for Hearn to be dreaming about unification bouts for Burns when he might get spanked by Beltran. You have to remember Beltran recently beat a fighter better than Burns in Henry Lundy last year in July, Lundy is a much superior fighter than Burns.

Miguel Vazquez vs. Ameth Diaz on September 28th in Tijuana, Mexico

vazquez43By Allan Fox: IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) will be making his 6th title defense of his International Boxing Federation title against 30-year-old #1 IBF Ameth Diaz (32-11, 23 KO’s) on September 28th at the Caliente Racetrack, in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.

A fight had been worked on for Vazquez to face WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, but Vazquez was unable to take the fight due what was reported as an illness.

It’s been 8 months since Vazquez last fought in easily beating previously undefeated Mercito Gesta by a 12 round unanimous decision last year in December. Vazquez looked good in dominating the powerful Gesta, and making the fight look surprisingly easy.

Burns must go back to the drawing board before any Unification Bout

burns433By Robbie Bannatyne: In the build up to his lightweight title bout against Jose Gonzalez, Ricky Burns bemoaned the fact that he didn’t get a proper chance to see his opponent in action. One thing that became apparent after their fight on Saturday was that the WBO Champion will hope he never sees this 29 year old Puerto Rican ever again.

Despite stating in the post-match interview that he thought – “some the rounds were close” – he will know in his heart of hearts that he would almost certainly have lost his title had Gonzalez not inexplicably retired on his stool, citing a dubious wrist injury – as opposed to his lack of heart and stamina – as the reason for his refusal to come out for round 10 at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.

If Burns beats Gonzalez, he’ll face Miguel Vazquez next

burns42(Photos courtesy PR Best Boxing Promotions/Joel Colon) By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn wants to match his fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) in a unification bout next if Burns gets past his #1 challenger Jose Gonzalez (22-0, 17 KO’s) this Saturday night at the Emirates Arena, in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom.

That’s a big if because Gonzalez is a huge, huge puncher of the first order and Burns is there to be hit all night long. Burns seems to see himself as a puncher lately and I’m wondering if his 4th round knockout win over Kevin Mitchell last September may have planted some ideas in his head about his power.

Miguel Vazquez vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa is in the works for the summer

gamboa4523By Allan Fox: According to ESPN Deportes a fight between IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) and former IBF/WBA featherweight Yuriokis Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO’s) is in the works for the summer.

Vazquez said to ESPN “They contacted me and offered me a fight with Yuriorkis Gamboa. It’s not yet a fact. We are awaiting whether we’ll be fighting or not. The fight depends on whether we reach a good agreement with my company Zanger…I’m ready to fight Yuriorkis Gamboa.”

The 31-year-old Gamboa’s career is really stagnating at this point. He’s only fought once in the past year in beating Michael Farenas by an impressive 12 round unanimous decision last December.

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez possible for May 11th

burns7By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) is back in play as an opponent for WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) for his next fight on May 11th in Scotland, UK. It was thought that Burns’ promoter Eddie Hearn was going to put Burns on a soft diet after signing him up to Matchroom Sport earlier this month.

Hearn wants to sell Burns’ fight in his own country of Scotland rather than England in order to take advantage of Burns’ fan base. I still would be very surprised if Hearn makes this fight because Burns has been so particular about preparation for his fights, and wanting a lot of time to prepare.
