Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez to still take place on 4/20, says Warren

warren33By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren is saying that the unification bout between IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) and WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-3, 10 KO’s) will still be taking place, according to the Guardian.

Warren said to the guardian.co.uk “I have a contract with Vazquez…I have a contract with Ricky. I like Ricky. I don’t want to fall out with him…Vazquez is contracted to box Ricky Burns on that date.”

Well, there it is. Burns will still be facing Vazquez on April 20th, and I it’s just as well. It’s not as if anything would really change all that much if someone else were promoting Burns.

Warren: Burns needs Vazquez’s belt to put him in better bargaining position for Broner fight

burns34By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren says one of the reasons why he chose to postpone the fight between his fighter WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez rather than cancel it altogether following the news of Vazquez coming down with an illness that wiped out their March 16th date is because Warren wants Burns to capture Vazquez’s IBF strap so that it’ll put Burns in a better position to bargain for a better deal for a unification bout against WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner.

Warren said on Steve Bunce’s Boxing Hour show on Monday “It’s important for Ricky Burns to win the other belt [IBF] and it will put him in a great bargaining position with Broner…this fight [Burns vs. Vazquez] is 100% and I’m not letting it go…Burns will win a tough, tough fight.”

Burns-Vazquez fight won’t be cancelled, says Warren

warren5367By Scott Gilfoid: British promoter Frank Warren says that IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) came down with a stomach virus, and that’s his fight with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s will be moved up March 16th to April 20th at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

The entire card is being moved as well, so we’ll still be seeing Nathan Cleverly vs. Robin Krasniqi in the main event. The one noticeable chance is that Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves won’t be participating because he’s left Frank Warren Promotions and signed with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Sport.

Broner to Burns: Come fight me b****!

broner68By Scott Gilfoid: WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner (26-0, 22 KO’s) took the opportunity to call out WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) earlier Monday after learning the news of Burns’ scheduled March 16th fight against IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) being cancelled because of Vazquez being sick.

Broner sent this message to Burns on his twitter today: “What up Ricky Burns now that your fight is canceled come fight me B****!!!!

Sadly, this is all Burns could say in response: “Adrien Broner, haha you’ve cheered me up a bit the day with that!”

Burns vs. Vasquez moved to April 20; Broner will have to find another opponent for June 15

burns334By Thomas Cowan: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns has had his March 16th WBO/IBF fight against Miguel Vasquez moved to April 20th. The fight is being moved because Vasquez is suffering from a viral infection, so he won’t be able to make that date. Nathan Cleverly’s proposed fight on the same card has also been moved to April 20.

Burns will be frustrated that the date has been changed but he’s going to have to deal with it and stay focused because this is the biggest fight of his career so far. It’s going to be an extremely tough fight for Burns but I think he will get the win.

Ricky Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez fight called off!!!

burns7By Scott Gilfoid: The March 16th unification bout between WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) and IBF champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s) has been called off. According to the Scottishsun.co.uk, Burns was told last Saturday night about the fight being cancelled.

There’s a possibility that it could be rescheduled in the next 30 days. There isn’t a stated reason for why the fight has been called off, but we recently heard news that Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves had left Frank Warren, the promoter of the March 16th event, and is signing with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport.

Losing Groves was definitely a huge blow to the card, which is headlined by a less than thrilling fight between WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly and Robin Krasniqi.

Burns vs. Vazquez March 16th fight in doubt

vazquez43By Scott Gilfoid: The March 16th unification bout between IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez and WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns is reportedly in doubt again. There are rumors that the fight still hasn’t been finalized. Eastsideboxing.com put out a report recently showing a photo of what appears to be a signed agreement from Vazquez along with a photo of Vazquez with his trainer Javier Capetillo holding the agreement. However, the rumors just don’t seem to be going away about this fight still not being finalized.

The good news is if the fight doesn’t happen, Burns dodges a serious bullet in the form of Vazquez because this is really a toss-up fight that could go either way. If Burns doesn’t have to fight Vazquez, then Burns can then accept a fight offered to him from Golden Boy Promotions to face WBC lightweight champion Adrien Broner in a unification bout on June 15th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
