Hearn wants Burns vs. Miguel Vazquez after Beltran fight

burns7575By Scott Gilfoid: WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns promoter Eddie Hearn is like a dog that won’t let go of a bone once he’s got it in his mouth. Hearn really wants a unification match between Burns and IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KO’s), and Hearn still seems to want the fight even though Vazquez reportedly priced himself out last time Hearn tried to put a fight together between him and Burns.

The thing is Burns has a fight coming up in 2 weeks against #6 WBO, Raymundo Beltran (28-6, 17 KO’s), and it might be a little pointless for Hearn to be dreaming about unification bouts for Burns when he might get spanked by Beltran. You have to remember Beltran recently beat a fighter better than Burns in Henry Lundy last year in July, Lundy is a much superior fighter than Burns.

Hearn said to RingTV “I really thought we’d get Miguel Vazquez this time…I know how much he wants and without going into figures it’s 4 times more than Beltran is being paid…You also have Richard Abril and the WBC title might open up if Daniel Estrada and Omar Figueroa.”

I just wonder why does Hearn want to match Burns against Vazquez so badly? Why doesn’t he want to put Burns in with Richard Abril or Adrien Broner? We’ve already seen Burns turns down two fights with Broner. Why isn’t Hearn going for that fight. I already know that answer. Vazquez is obviously perceived as the weak link among the four lightweight champions, and probably the only guy that Burns has a chance of beating. That’s not exactly sporting going after the weak link, is it? How about Burns taking on the best in the lightweight division instead of what some boxing fans consider as the weakest of the champions.

Oh, this is going to be funny if Burns winds up losing badly to Beltran on September 7th. Here we have Hearn mapping out the distant future for Burns as if a win for Burns over Beltran was assured. Hearn is going to have some serious egg on his face if Burns gets beaten the way that Lundy was against Beltran.

If you look at Beltran’s past fights, and then looked at some of Burns’ recent fights, you can only conclude that Burns is the perfect opponent for Beltran. Burns likes to retreat to the ropes and over up when his opponents put pressure on him. If you do that against Beltran, you’re asking for punishment. Burns won’t be able to get away with his tricks like putting an arm bar on to keep Beltran from throwing punches.

Beltran is smart enough to know that if Burns does this, he’s clobber him with his free hands. I’ve seen some of Burns’ previous opponents that didn’t have a clue what to do when Burns would put the old arm bar on them. Beltran’s been around the block and he knows what to when he has an opponent that is just trying to stall, and prevent him from punching.
