Macklin to fight on 8/30 in Dublin

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: 32-year-old Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KO’s) has joined the Matchroom Sport team for the August 30th card at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. There’s no word about who Macklin will be fighting, but it makes sense to assume that it’s going to be a weaker opponent in order to make sure that he doesn’t get beaten. Macklin has lost 3 out of his last 5 fights. Not good, is it?

The talk is that they want to match Macklin up against Andy Lee later this year in a domestic level scrap. It’s a good fight because both guys are around then same level with the same career outlook.

Jennings-Perez & Geale-Macklin on May 24th on HBO

geale3By Allan Fox: Unbeaten heavyweight contenders Mike Perez (20-0-1, 12 KO’s) and Bryant Jennings (18-0, 10 KO’s) will be facing each other in a World Boxing Council heavyweight eliminator bout on May 24th at a site still to be determined in the United States on HBO. Deontay will be fighting the winner of the May 10th fight between Chris Arreola and Bermane Stiverene later this year for the WBC title. Then the winner of that fight will be required to face the winner of the Jennings vs. Perez fight in their next bout.

Matthew Macklin vs. Daniel Geale possible for May 24th on HBO

macklin64By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KO’s) is being talked about for a fight against former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) on May 24th in a fight that will take place on HBO, according to Steve Kim. There won’t be any title on the line obviously because Geale was beaten by Darren Barker last year in August and he lost his IBF strap in that fight. Since then, Geale has only fought once in beating Australian fighter Garth Wood. Geale had the chance to fight WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but the fight never materialized.

Macklin, #9 WBA, #10 WBO, #14 WBC, was destroyed in 3 rounds by Golovkin last year in June in a failed attempt to capture his WBA 160lb title. Macklin has fought once since then in beating Lamar Russ by a much tougher than expected 10 round unanimous decision last December. Macklin took a pounding by the taller 6’2” Russ, and if this fighter hadn’t run out of gas late in the fight, he would have definitely beaten Macklin.

Macklin gives Adama little chance of beating Golovkin tonight

golovkin11(Photo, Courtesy Sumio Yamada/Christian Kuechl) By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin, one of the former knockout victims of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (28-0, 25 KO’s), is giving his opponent for tonight Osumanu Adama (22-3, 16 KO’s) next to no chance of beating Golovkin when the two meet each other tonight at the Salle des etoiles, Monte Carlo, Monaco. Macklin was blasted out in 3 rounds by Golovkin last year in getting stopped with a body shot last June.

Macklin thinks that the only chance that Adama has to win the fight is if he goes right after Golovkin and tries to turn it into a war rather than trying to survive by boxing him. In fact, Macklin feels that the last thing that Adama wants to do is go in there and try to box Golovkin. Macklin thinks this would be a mistake due to Golovkin’s superior boxing skills.

Andy Lee wants Matthew Macklin fight

lee564545By Scott Gilfoid: After seeing Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KO’s) struggle badly to beat a very average little known Lamar Russ last Saturday night, #12 WBA middleweight contender Andy Lee (31-2, 22 KO’s) is suddenly showing a great deal of interest in taking on the now 2nd tier Macklin.

In truth, both of these guys’ stock has plummeted in the past year due to devastating defeats, and neither are ranked in the top 5 anymore. To be honest, things are looking mighty bleak for Lee and Macklin at this point, and a fight between them might be about as good as it gets right now because title shots could a long ways off.

Exclusive Coverage and Undercard Results: Rigondeaux vs. Agbeko

rigon13By Sevak Sarkisian-Ringside: Matt Korobov improves to (22-0 -13Ko’s) via TKO 28 seconds going into the 9th round against Derek Edwards who drops to (26-3-13Ko’s).

Mathew Macklin v Lamar Russ

Macklin improves to (30-5-20Ko’s) while Russ drops to (14-1-7Ko’s). Russ would have good moments when he didn’t stay in one spot and used movement. Macklin landed the harder shots throughout the fight and displayed a nice hard jab to help close the distance. However, Russ proved that Macklin can be out boxed by a good enough boxer. Russ was able to do it for a few rounds throughout the fight by using his jab to maintain distance and lateral movement. It was an entertaining contest and I wouldn’t mind seeing ether fighter again.

Macklin beats Russ, but fails to impress

macklin64By Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KO’s) had to battle hard last night to defeat little known middleweight Lamar Russ (14-1, 7 KO’s) in winning a 10 round unanimous decision at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

If you wanted to know how things went for Macklin then all you had to do was take one look at his bruised and reddened face to know the full story.

You didn’t even need to hear him utter a word to see that this had been a very tough struggle for the 31-year-old Macklin. The judges scored the fight 96-94, 97-93, 98-92. I think the 96-94 was the most accurate score of the three for this fight.

Matthew Macklin to face Lamar Russ on December 7th

macklin44334By Scott Gilfoid: It didn’t take Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) find a replacement opponent to face on December 7th in place of the injured Willie Nelson on the undercard of the Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Joseph Agbeko fight at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Macklin will be facing someone named Lamar Russ (14-0, 7 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Russ, 26, has wins over Latif Mundy and Russell Jordan, but the other opponents are mostly little known opposition. Russ isn’t ranked in the top 15 in the middleweight division, so it looks like Macklin will be taking it easy for this fight to make sure he gets a guaranteed win. Macklin has the chance to fight the unbeaten Russian puncher Matt Korobov, but he turned down the fight according to Rafael.

Macklin looking for opponent for December 7th card

macklin56556By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin’s December 7th scheduled fight against junior middleweight contender Willie Nelson is now down the drain due to Nelson suffering an elbow injury that will keep prevent him from taking the fight at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

According to ESPN, Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) was offered a fight against the unbeaten Russian Matt Korovbov (21-0, 12 KO’s), but Macklin didn’t want the fight due to him having only a short period of time to prepare for his southpaw style. It’s perhaps a good thing that Macklin didn’t take that fight because I think Korobov would have had an excellent chance of beating Macklin badly, even if Macklin was well prepared for the fight.

Macklin vs. Nelson added to Rigondeaux-Agbeko card on December 7th

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: The struggling middleweight Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) will try to turn his sinking career around on December 7th against junior middleweight Willie Nelson (21-1-1, 12 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout on the undercard of the HBO televised Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Joseph Agbeko card at the Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA. Also on the card will be James Kirkland vs. Glen Tapia.

This card is going to have some stiff competition from a Golden Boy Promoted card on the same night on Showtime head-lined by Paulie Malignaggi vs. Zab Judah. That card has Austin Trout vs. Erislanady Lara and Sakio Bika vs. Anthony Dirrell. That seems like a better fight card than the Rigondeaux-Agbeko one, but that’s just my view. I’m sure a lot of fans would prefer to see Rigondeaux face Agbeko than Malignaggi vs. Judah.
