Macklin to be back on HBO in November

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: Fringe middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) says he’ll be back in the ring fighting in November on HBO against an opponent still to be determined. Macklin, #11 WBA, was stopped in the 3rd round last Saturday night by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

This was Macklin’s third defeat in his last four fights, and he’s kicking himself for using the wrong strategy against the hard hitting Golovkin.

Macklin feels that it would have had more of a chance to beat Golovkin if he had gone straight at him in the 1st round and thrown everything but the kitchen sink at him.

Punch Out Weekly

Canelo and Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Peart Miles: Hello readers of Boxing news 24, in this weeks edition of Punch Out weekly I will be discussing the fallout from Gennady Golovkin vs. Mathew Macklin, Froch vs Groves? And other big news and events from the past week in the boxing world.

Hello GGG

I will be completely honest, I wasn’t sure about Golovkin as I only seen him box Gabriel Rosado back in January and the YouTube clip of him facing Andre Dirrell in the 2004 Olympics. But after watching he’s performance against Macklin I can say,  Golovkin put on a fantastic show, solidifying himself as one of the must watch boxers in the game. It wasn’t just the power which stood out for me it was also the  fantastic footwork and balance, he’s confidence in the ring was also great. There wasn’t anything Macklin could do which could make Golovkin think twice before coming forward.

Where does Matthew Macklin go from here?

macklin5by Scott Gilfoid: Middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) never stood a chance against the force of nature WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) last Saturday night in getting stopped in the 3rd round.

Macklin looked like a deer being chased by a hunter in that fight, as he scurried around the ring looking for a safe place to hide. Unfortunately for Macklin, there were no were safe places and he was blasted to the canvas with a shotgun left hand to the body by Golovkin in the 3rd.

Macklin’s loss was his 3rd defeat in his last 4 fights, and that’s journeyman type stuff when you’ve got that many defeats in a short period of time. The frequency of Macklin’s defeats seems to be sending a clear message that Macklin doesn’t have the talent to compete against the cream of the middleweight division.

Golovkin-Macklin draws 1.1 million viewers on HBO

golovkin433By Allan Fox: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s 3rd round knockout win over Matthew Macklin last Saturday night was seen by 1.1 million viewers on HBO, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. These numbers were up considerably from Golovkin’s fight against Gabriel Rosado, which brought in 813,000 viewers on HBO in January and the 685 thousand that saw Golovkin’s fight against Grzegorz Proksa last year in September.

What’s unclear is whether Golovkin’s huge increase from the Rosado fight was due to Golovkin gaining more fans or because of Macklin’s large Irish fan base tuning in from the East coast to watch him fight. Rafael points out that HBO put more time and effort into marketing the Golovkin vs. Macklin fight, and that could also explain the better numbers.

Next steps for Golovkin

golovkin45by Bob Smith: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) is fresh from a very impressive win over the brave but overmatched Matthew Macklin, but the question remains: where to go from here? Golovkin systematically dismantled, overwhelmed, and in the end dominated one of the best middleweights in the world in Matthew Macklin.

Macklin is a peer of both Martinez and Felix Sturm and performed impressively against both of them. But against Golovkin he looked like an amateur.

However, don’t take my word for it – far more important words come from Matthew Macklin, and his promoter Lou Dibella said to ESPN: “I heard that shot, It sounded like something cracked. That was the hardest body shot possibly I’ve ever seen.”

Macklin: Golovkin is the best; better than Sergio Martinez

764(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) was literally smothering IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) with compliments after being stopped in the 3rd round from a left-hand body shot from Golovkin at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

After the fight, Macklin gushed “Without a shadow of a doubt he’s [Golovkin] the best I’ve fought. He’s better than Sergio Martinez.”

Golovkin systematically took Macklin apart tonight in pounding him for three rounds with hurtful shots, sending him in full flight from the 1st round until the bitter end in the 3rd when Golovkin caught up to him and send him into oblivion with a left hand to midsection.

Golovkin stops Macklin; Oosthuizen-Gonzales fight to draw; Nelson wins

762(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) left no doubt who the better fighter was tonight in stopping an over-matched Matthew Macklin (29-5, 20 KO’s) in the 3rd round with a crushing left to the body that left Macklin down on the canvas in agony holding his midsection and grimacing in total pain at the the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA.

The referee Eddie Cotton gave a 10 count and officially halted the brutal slaughter at 1:24 of the 3rd round with Macklin still on the canvas clutching his midsection.

It was immediately clear in the difference in class and power between the two fighters, as Golovkin nailed Macklin with a couple of hard shots that sent him scurrying like a rabbit. Macklin didn’t want any part of Golovkin’s power and he ran for the entire round.

Atlas: Macklin has no chance of beating Golovkin

martinez4545By Scott Gilfoid: Analyst Teddy Atlas of ESPN is giving Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) not chance of beating undefeated IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) tonight in their fight at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Atlas sees Macklin as being made to order for Golovkin because of his brawling style, and he thinks he’s going to make it incredibly easy for Golovkin to nail him with his big shots by coming to him.

Atlas said this to ESPN when asked if Macklin has a chance of beating Golovkin: “No, not at all. Look, Macklin’s a game guy. I think he’s got a lot of mileage out of going 11 rounds with [Sergio] Martinez. I think people are making him a better fighter than he is…he doesn’t fit in with Golovkin.

Gennady Golovkin vs Matthew Macklin Preview

380(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Peter Wells (twitter @boxingbrains): Its not every fighter that will be awarded with 3 world title shots in 3 years when he loses the first 2. So when Matthew Macklin – 29-4(20) – was awarded with the chance to make it 3rd time lucky then there must have been as much relief as joy. Deep down ‘Mack the knife’ knows that a defeat at the hands of WBA ‘world’ Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin – 26-0(23) – would culminate in a hard road back to convince promoters and TV companies he can change his fortunes.

Win or lose and Macklin still has a couple of lucrative fights in store for him. A much anticipated mini-tournament is what British fight fans crave. British trio Macklin, Darren Barker and Martin Murray have all proved to be world class. Barker and Macklin both put up brave efforts vs Sergio Martinez but were both ultimately outgunned. While Martin Murray was very unlucky not to get the decision in Argentina when challenging Martinez. Murray and Macklin also have both come close to upsetting Felix Sturm. Macklin losing a close points decision while Murray claimed a draw.

Purses for Saturday: Golovkin $350K, Macklin $300K; Oosthuizen $30K, Gonzalez $50K

383(Photo credit: Dibella Entertainment) By Dan Ambrose: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) may be the best fighter in the 160 lb. division, but his purse for this Saturday night doesn’t show that for his title defense against Matthew Macklin (29-4, 20 KO’s) at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods Resort, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.

Golovkin will receive $350,000 thousand for this fight; while contender Macklin surprisingly will be making almost as much at $300,000. It doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense for Golovkin to only be making $50K more than his challenger.
