Will Matthew Macklin retire?

macklin56By Scott Gilfoid: #6 WBC Matthew Macklin (31-6, 20 KOs) says he plans on thinking hard about which direction he should go with his career following a 10th round knockout defeat at the hands of #4 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (25-4-2, 13 KKOs) last Saturday night at the 3 Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Macklin was knocked out by a single right hand by Heiland in the 10th round, and he was unable to get up from the knockdown in order to continue fighting.

Heiland stops Macklin in 10th round

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: Matthew Macklin (31-6, 20 KOs) can forget about his dream about fighting WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. Earlier tonight, Macklin was stopped in the 10th round by Jorge Sebastian Heiland (25-4-2, 13 KOs) in their WBC middleweight title eliminator at the 3 Arena in Dublin, Ireland.

Heiland totally dominated an old, slow and badly outclassed Macklin before stopping him with a flurry of shots in the 10th round. The fight was stopped at :42 of the 10th. In winning the fight, Heiland captured the WBC International 160 pound title.

This weekend 15/11/2014 – Return of the Mack, Klitschko vs Pulev

This weekend sees the Return of Matthew Macklin after his 8 round fight on the Smith vs Abraham card. He faces off against Jorge Sebastian Heiland in what should be a routine victory for Macklin, but as many know Macklin is coming off the back of a poor performance in Germany and was last year knocked out by GGG Gennady Golovkin.

Macklin wants to face Miguel Cotto in Dublin if he beats Heiland

macklin3434(Matthew Macklin seen here getting pounded by Sergio Martinez) By Scott Gilfoid: #6 WBC, #10 WBA, #13 WBO Matthew Macklin (31-5, 20 KOs) is in position to become the mandatory challenger to World Boxing Council middleweight champion Miguel Cotto if Macklin beats little known #4 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (24-4-2, 12 KOs) in their fight next month on November 15th at the 3Arena, in Dublin, Ireland.

Macklin might beat Heiland, which isn’t saying much because he’s not a great fighter, but the odds of Macklin getting a title shot against Cotto are very slim in my view. Cotto would take some much criticism from boxing fans if he were to fight Macklin instead of Golovkin.

Macklin: I’ll beat Heiland and get a world title shot in 2015

macklin66By Scott Gilfoid: Despite having lost 3 out of his last 6 fights, #6 WBC Matthew Macklin (31-5, 20 KOs) will be fighting #4 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (24-4-2, 12 KOs) in a World Boxing Council 160 middleweight eliminator bout next month on November 15th at the 3Arena, in Dublin, Ireland.

It’s obvious that Macklin has been blessed with good fortune to be fighting in an eliminator for the WBC 160 pound title, because he’s fought for world titles at 160 three times in the past three years in losses to Felix Sturm, Sergio Martinez and Gennady Golovkin, and yet here Macklin is on the verge of getting a fourth world title shot if he can get past the little known Heiland.

Matthew Macklin faces Jorge Sebastian Heiland on 11/15 in WBC 160lb title eliminator

macklinBy Scott Gilfoid: #9 WBC Matthew Macklin (31-5, 20 KOs) will be facing WBC International middleweight champion Jorge Sebastian Heiland (24-4-2, 12 KOs) next month in a World Boxing Council 160 pound title eliminator bout on November 15th at the 3Arena, Dublin, Ireland.

The Macklin-Heiland fight was supposed to have taken place on August 30th, but it had to be moved to 11/15 due to Macklin’s trainer Jaime Moore suffering a gunshot wound in Spain.

I’m sure Macklin would absolutely love to get a crack at Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but I don’t see that happening even if he beats Heiland. Those guys are very, very selective in who they face now, and they’re not going to take a fight against a former three time world title challenger who has lost all three fights.

Heiland is ranked #6 by the WBC, but he’s never beaten anyone of note and he’s plenty of times against obscure opposition with less than stellar opposition.

Macklin struggles to beat Yebes

macklinBy Scott Gilfoid: #9 WBC Matthew Macklin (31-5, 20 KOs) had to struggle hard last night to beat little known 2nd tier fighter Jose Yebes (12-5-1, 5 KOs) by an 8 round majority decision on the undercard of the Arthur Abraham vs. Paul Smith fight card at the Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Macklin was shocked after the fight to see the scores of 77-75, 77-75 and 76-76, because he thought that he easily won the fight. But in looking at the fight, I had the 35-year-old Yebes edging Macklin by a round.

A draw would be fine as well, but the reality is that Yebes completely took over the fight from the 4th round on and swept the last 5 rounds. He really got the better of Macklin with his high work rate, and his ability to catch Macklin again and again with head-snapping shots.

Macklin-Heiland fight post-poned

macklin64By Gavin “Neds” O’Connor: The Matthew Macklin v Jorge Sebastian Heiland, WBC 160lb title eliminator bout has been temporarily shelved because of Macklin’s trainer Jamie Moore suffering a couple of gunshot wounds while in Spain recently.

The Macklin-Heiland fight, which had been originally scheduled for August 30th at the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland, will eventually be rescheduled at some point I time.

With a victory over Heiland, Macklin will be looking to secure a 4th middleweight title chance. However, he’s going to need to wait a while before the Heiland fight can take place. It’s going to need to stay on the back burner.

In a statement released through Matchroom boxing Macklin said, “I am disappointed to have to postpone my fight but in light of circumstances and the disruption to my preparation it is the right thing to do.”

Macklin faces Jorge Sebastian Heiland in WBC 160 lb eliminator on August 30th

macklinBy Scott Gilfoid: Despite #9 WBC Matthew Macklin (30-5, 20 KOs) having lost 3 out of his last 5 fights, his promoter Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Sport has got him a matched up with #4 WBC Jorge Sebastian Heiland (23-4-2, 11 KOs) in a WBC middleweight title eliminator bout on August 30th at the National Stadium, in Dublin, Ireland.

The winner of the Macklin-Heiland fight becomes the mandatory challenger for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. I really can’t see Cotto bothering to face the winner of the Macklin-Heiland fight. Cotto isn’t going to face someone that boxing fans in the U.S don’t care to see, so he’s likely going to make the winner of the Macklin-Heiland sit around for ages until he vacates or gets beaten.

If Saul “Canelo” Alvarez beats Cotto next year to capture his WBC title, I doubt he’d burn up one of his pay-per-view fights facing Macklin or Heiland. He’ll either vacate or sit on the title facing other guys. He’s not going to fight either of them because it would be perceived as a terrible mismatch, and fans would have zero interest in wanting to see him fight either of them.
