Danny Garcia: Matthysse isn’t one of the best fighters at 140

Image: Danny Garcia: Matthysse isn't one of the best fighters at 140(Photo credit: Naoki Fakuda) By Dan Ambrose: It looks like the ducking is already starting for WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 15 KO’s) after having stopped Erik Morales (52-9, 36 KO’s) in the fourth round in their rematch last night in Brooklyn, New York. Garcia did a good job of putting Morales out of his misery with a nice left hook to the head that rendered him senseless.

However, after the fight when Garcia was questioned about whether or not he’d be interested in fighting interim WBC light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s), Garcia said “To me, Lucas Matthysse isn’t one of the best. He doesn’t got a title. I can beat anybody.”

That doesn’t sound like Garcia wants to mix it up with the hard hitting Matthysse, does it? Garcia may not have much choice because he’s going to have to fight Matthysse next year or else he’ll be stripped of his WBC title by the World Boxing Council.

Rios should have to prove himself against Garcia, Matthysse and Peterson before getting Pacquiao

Image: Rios should have to prove himself against Garcia, Matthysse and Peterson before getting PacquiaoBy Chris Williams: Brandon Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO’s) probably earned himself a shot against Manny Pacquiao last night in defeated Mike Alvarado (33-1, 23 KO’s) in their WBO light welterweight eliminator bout. With both Rios and Pacquiao belonging to the same Top Rank stable, it’s now almost a given that their promoter Bob Arum will match Rios up with Pacquiao next April, provided that Pacquiao beats Juan Manuel Marquez on December 8th. If Pacquiao loses, then it’ll likely be Marquez that faces Rios.

By matching Rios up with Pacquiao, Arum continues with the club-like fight matching of his fighters because it’s just another Top Rank in house fight for Arum if he makes this fight. I think Rios is a decent fighter but I’d like to see him actually prove himself worthy of a fight with Pacquiao by beating more established light welterweights like Lucas Matthysse, Danny Garcia, and Lamont Peterson before Rios gets a shot against Pacquiao.

Matthysse-Ajose sold only 377 tickets for September 8th fight

Image: Matthysse-Ajose sold only 377 tickets for September 8th fightBy Eric Thomas: The September 8th card headlined by Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) and Olusegun Ajose (30-1, 14 KO’s) reportedly sold only 377 tickets with a $65,657 gate, according to Dan Rafael. The fight took place at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rafael states that Golden Boy Promotions gave away 810 tickets for the fight. That’s not good.

It’s really not all that surprising that this fight card failed in a major way because neither Matthysse nor Ajose are huge names and the undercard was completely lacking in big named fighters

Khan interested in Matthysse fight

Image: Khan interested in Matthysse fightBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says that WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) is one of the three fighters he’s interested in taking on for his next fight on December 15th.

Khan told thaboxingvoice.com “Offensively I’m a great fighter. Defensively, I need a lot of help. I want to be world champion again. I would love a rematch with [Danny Garcia] but he won’t want it. I’m happy to fight him anytime. Matthysse had a great win [against Olusegun Ajose]. Maybe he can be one.”

Khan takes a swipe at Matthysse

Image: Khan takes a swipe at Matthysse(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan came out of the woodwork earlier today to comment on Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) in his twitter page.

Khan said “Is Lucas Matthysse the same guy @superjudah [Zab Judah] beat before he fought me last year?”

As far as Matthysse’s loss to Judah goes the fight took place in November 2010, and Matthysse dominated the last eight rounds of the fight after getting off to a slow start in the four rounds.

Matthysse dominates Olusegun in 10th round TKO

Image: Matthysse dominates Olusegun in 10th round TKO(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Allan Fox: Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) is now the WBC interim light welterweight champion after defeating previously unbeaten #1 WBC Olusegun Ajose (30-1, 14 KO’s) by a 10th round TKO on Saturday night in their battle for the vacant World Boxing Council interim 140 pound title on Showtime at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Matthysse, 29, had Ajose in trouble off and on from the 7th round on and finally put him out of his misery in the 10th round after knocking him down. The fight was stopped at 2:59 of the 10th. It’s a credit to Ajose that he was able to take so many hard head and body shots from the Argentinian Matthysse, because had this been someone like Amir Khan, Matthysse likely would have scored a knockout much earlier in the fight.

Image: Matthysse and Olusegun battle it out tonight for interim WBC 140 lb titleBy Jason Kim: #2 WBC light welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 28 KO’s) and unbeaten #1 WBC Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) will be squaring off tonight on Showtime for the interim World Boxing Council 140 lb title at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This is the 29-year-old Matthysse’s big opportunity to prove that he deserves to be among the very best in the light welterweight division after having lost two controversial decisions to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the recent past. If Matthysse can’t get past the 32-year-old Olusegun tonight then he won’t have anymore excuses that he can use.

Image: Olusegun: I'm not concerned about Matthysse's power(Photo: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME) By Allan Fox: Unbeaten #1 WBC Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) says he’s not worried at all about the power of #2 WBC Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s) in their fight this Saturday night on Showtime at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, The Joint, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Olusegun, 32, feels he’ll be able to take any big power shot that the 29-year-old Matthysse hits him with and then return fire on him.

Olusegun said this during his final press conference with Matthysse on Thursday: “Whatever power he has, show me. He has to land first. I am not worried about his power. I’m not even thinking about his power. If he hits me, I am going to him back.”

Who would you rather see fight?

Image: Who would you rather see fight?By Mohammad Malik: I don’t know if it’s just me but I can honestly say that I’ve lost quite a bit of interest in the whole Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao saga. After watching their last fights, it was obvious that they have lost a step or two.
