Image: Khan interested in Matthysse fightBy William Mackay: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) says that WBC interim light welterweight champion Lucas Matthysse (32-2, 30 KO’s) is one of the three fighters he’s interested in taking on for his next fight on December 15th.

Khan told thaboxingvoice.com “Offensively I’m a great fighter. Defensively, I need a lot of help. I want to be world champion again. I would love a rematch with [Danny Garcia] but he won’t want it. I’m happy to fight him anytime. Matthysse had a great win [against Olusegun Ajose]. Maybe he can be one.”

I’d be really surprised if Khan chose Matthysse for his next fight, and I’d be even more surprised if Khan’s promoter Golden Boy Promotions approved of that fight. Khan was just viciously knocked out by Danny Garcia in his last fight in July. If Golden Boy were to agree to put Khan in with a puncher like Matthysse we could see Khan relegated to journeyman status by seeing him get knocked out again. Another knockout loss for Khan at this point and I think that would probably finish him as far as his fights being televised on HBO, Sky or Primetime.

There’s no point in televising a fighter that has lost three straight fights with two of them being knockouts. Matthysse would be very dangerous for Khan because he can punch, he can take a good shot, and he never stops coming. Matthysse isn’t as slow Marcos Maidana, and he’d be able to catch up to Khan to knock him out if this fight were to be made.

Khan needs to be matched against a weak puncher for his next fight and probably for his next two or three fights after that just to make sure he doesn’t get knocked out again.

Khan is still looking to pick out a new trainer to replace his existing trainer Freddie Roach. He still hasn’t officially given Roach the boot, but it’s looking pretty bleak for him at this point. Khan wants a trainer that can teach him some defensive skills and give him more time.

Roach is busy with other fighters, although he can always squeeze can in if he’s willing to wait. Defensively, it looks like Khan is going to have problems no matter who trains him because as a world class fighter he’s going to have to be able to take an occasional hard shot in order to beat the best fighters at 140, and it doesn’t look like he’s got the chin for that.
