Josesito Lopez to fight in January

Image: Josesito Lopez to fight in JanuaryBy Dan Ambrose: WBC Silver welterweight champion Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) will be back in the welterweight division defending his 147 pound trinket in January against a still to be determined opponent according to the Koncrete Jungle. Lopez, 28, was hand-picked by Golden Boy Promotions to fight their future star WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez last month and things ended up badly for Lopez with him getting knocked down three times in getting stopped in the 5th round.

With that horrible fight out of the way, Lopez is ready to start fighting guys more his own size and strength at 147. Lopez is going to have to be matched carefully because there’s still a lot of fighters in the welterweight division that he doesn’t match up with. Lopez really lucked out in beating Victor Ortiz last June in getting a 9th round stoppage win because Ortiz was winning the fight and likely would have cruised to a victory if not for his broken jaw.

Canelo’s Future

Image: Canelo's FutureBy Duke Pahulu: It’s obvious that Golden Boy is setting WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) up for a big fight. They have been feeding Canelo tomato cans and damaged goods since winning his 154 title. So lets see who is out there for Golden Boy to cash in on for their Canelo project.

Golden Boy stated during the lead-up of the Lopez fight that they wanted to put Canelo in the ring in December. Miguel Cotto is set to face Austin Trout. “K-9” Cornelius Brundage is facing Andre Berto. And Vanes Martiyosan vs. Erislandy Lara is set as well. James Kirkland is in a legal battle with his corner and promoter.

What next for Saul Alvarez?

Image: What next for Saul Alvarez?(Photo credit: Leopoldo Gonzalez) By Mark Havey: On account of his cinnamon coloured hair, he is affectionately referred to as “Canelo” by his legion of Mexican fans. Saul Alvarez retained his WBC light middleweight belt last night by destroying Josesito Lopez in 5 rounds. Canelo seemed comfortable throughout the right. Lopez was the opposite. Body shots were clearly breaking his spirit and the combinations he found flying at his head made it clear he was in the wrong fight.

Alvarez has his mind set on greatness, but what is next for him? I would love to see him face Cotto. This would establish him as a true force in boxing. Cotto gave Mayweather trouble in his last fight. If Alvarez could stop Cotto he would place the world at his feet. There are no other fights at 154 lbs for Canelo. Nothing interesting anyway.

Alvarez crushes Lopez: Is Canelo the real deal?

Image: Alvarez crushes Lopez: Is Canelo the real deal?(Photo credit: Alma Montiel) By David Ishola: Having just watched Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) destroy Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) last night in Las Vegas, Nevada, I feel compelled to ask if Saul Alvarez really is the real deal. Usually beating someone coming up in weight for the first time doesn’t mean too much in my opinion and I’m not really a believer in Lopez being a great fighter but it has got to the point now with Alvarez where he is literally running through everyone put in front of him.

Of course there will be the nay sayers who will say he is being protected and given no hopers in order to build him up and get as much hype around him but at just turned 22 years old he is already World champion and considered the best in his weight class by most people. The one thing he doesn’t yet have on his c.v is a win over a HUGE name and although i was once a big fan of Shane Mosley he was nowhere near the boxer he once was and went up in weight class for Alvarez/Mosley.

Alvarez destroys Lopez in 5th round: Maidana stops Soto-Karass; De Leon defeats Gonzalez

Image: Alvarez destroys Lopez in 5th round: Maidana stops Soto-Karass; De Leon defeats Gonzalez(Photos: Tom Casino/SHOWTIME) By Allan Fox: As expected, WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) had an easy time defeating #4 WBC Josesito Lopez (30-5, 18 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO on Saturday night on Showtime at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alvarez knocked Lopez down in rounds 2,3 and 4. In the 5th, referee Joe Cortez stopped the fight. Lopez couldn’t handle Alvarez’s power.

This fight was just too easy for Alvarez, and it never really get interesting because Lopez, who recently moved up from welterweight, just didn’t have the size to compete with Alvarez in this fight.

Saul Alvarez needs to work on Josesito Lopez’s flabby midsection tonight

Image: Saul Alvarez needs to work on Josesito Lopez's flabby midsection tonight(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Jason Kim: Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) has always been known for coming into his fights wire thin in excellent shape with no signs of fat anywhere on his body, which is why it was downright shocking to see how much fat that Lopez had put on around his midsection during yesterday’s weigh-in for his fight against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) tonight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 28-year-old Lopez might as well have painted a “Hit me” sign on his flabby stomach because that’s where Canelo Alvarez will no doubt be aiming a significant amount of his shots tonight. You have to assume that the 22-year-old Alvarez was already planning to be going to the body a lot against Lopez due to his constantly moving style of fighting.

Golden Boy says Alvarez-Lopez card sold out, but tickets still available

Image: Golden Boy says Alvarez-Lopez card sold out, but tickets still available(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions announced that Saturday’s Saul Alvarez vs. Josesito Lopez card is a sell out at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, tickets are reportedly still available at Ticketmaster, says Dan Rafael. So what’s up with that? Is is a sell out or isn’t it?

You have to wonder what’s the real story. Is Golden Boy just trying to show Top Rank that their card is as successful as theirs? The Top Rank Chavez Jr-Martinez card reportedly sold out on Thursday, which isn’t surprising due to how popular Chavez Jr.

Weigh-in: Canelo Alvarez looking very good; Josesito Alvarez looks slightly pudgy around the midsection

Image: Weigh-in: Canelo Alvarez looking very good; Josesito Alvarez looks slightly pudgy around the midsection(Photo Credit: Tom Casino / SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) looked incredibly sharp and in top shape during Friday’s weigh-in with Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) for their fight tomorrow night on Showtime at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo weighed in at a healthy looking 154 pounds at the weigh-in, and showed absolutely no signs of being weigh-drained.

For his part, the 28-year-old Lopez looked kind of flabby around the middle in weighing in at 153 lbs. My guess is Lopez wasn’t able to pack on pure muscle in moving up in weight from 147 and had to settle for putting on some flab. It’s not easy putting a muscle weight in three months.

Atlas sees Canelo Alvarez as being too talented and big for Josesito Lopez

Image: Atlas sees Canelo Alvarez as being too talented and big for Josesito Lopez(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: ESPN analyst Teddy Atlas sees this Saturday’s fight between WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) and Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, as being a cut dried case of the 22-year-old Alvarez having simply too much power and size for the welterweight Lopez.

However, Atlas doesn’t just think that Alvarez’s power and weight will be major factors in him winning this Saturday. Atlas also points to Alvarez’s boxing skills and speed as being huge factors for him in this fight.

Josesito Lopez: I’m going to set a fast pace against Saul Alvarez and see what happens

Image: Josesito Lopez: I'm going to set a fast pace against Saul Alvarez and see what happens(Photo credit: Ester Lin/Showtime) By Eric Thomas: #4 WBC Josesito Lopez (30-4, 18 KO’s) plans on trying to tire WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) out in their fight this Saturday night by setting an incredibly fast pace at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight, which will be televised by Showtime, pits the slender but tall 28-year-old Lopez against the younger but much more solidly built and stronger 22-year-old Alvarez.

Lopez said to SportsIllustrated.cnn.com “With Canelo we have to be smart, with a fast pace. He has not had to work at a fast pace. We’re going to see if he can. We’re a little more active in the ring than he is. We’re going to push him. We are not going to let him get 30 seconds of waiting around.”
